So here's a fun thing: There are now ~500~ posts on my site, all ready and waiting for you to read them! The articles span over 40 years of gaming across almost as many formats - I'm sure you'll find something you like if you go take a look :D
PS2 games:
(OK, I think I've made my point!)
(Sorry for the emulated upscaling in some of the screenshots in this thread - I went through a "Ooh, what's this look like in HD?" phase)
Games, in order (L-R, top to bottom)
1st tweet: Castlevania: Lament of Innocence/Boku no Natsuyasumi 2/Tori no Hoshi/Xenosaga Ep 2

LOOK AT GRANDIA'S FISH!
LOOK AT THEM!
They're this perfect little ~suggestion~ of a shape swimming against the current!
Look at the sunlight playing on the surface!
Look at their shadows underneath!
LOOK AT THE FISHIES PLEASE
PleasepleasePLEASE can we have more games where "Looks good" means "Has it's own style" and not "If you enter photo mode and zoom in you can see individual beard follicles"
Seeing a lot of "How come QA didn't catch ~that~?!" today so here's AFAIK how game QA actually works:
-QA find a problem and report it ASAP
-A manager looks at the report, sees the bug doesn't break the game, and puts it in the "That's nice" pile.
-There is no step three
How to have an amazing game collection:
1) Never buy "For the collection"
2) Don't fill gaps in series just b/c there's a gap
3) Sell games you don't enjoy
4) Don't try and force yourself to play classics you "should" like
5) Don't let other people tell you what you're missing
~Woah~
Just watch the sun in the top-left of this Gun Hazard clip!
It doesn't just come and go - there are separate fades for the sun itself and that artistic lens flare, and when it's fully visible the whole screen gets tinted an outdoorsy blue! :O
Here's a quick GIF demonstrating the fantastically smooth movement found in PC-98 game Elmknight
(And that incredible cockpit surround too)
(Micro Cabin, 1992)
"What's this kanji? How can I not know this word? I'm so, so, stupid..."
*looks up kanji*
AND IT'S ALWAYS EITHER
"This is an outdated term used exclusively when a female frog is addressing a tree under the harvest moon"
OR
"Just a really weird way of saying 'a spoon'"
The Visions of Mana demo, the majority of Square-Enix's recent output in general, and games like Eiyuden Chronicle are your semi-regular reminder that developers still do make weird, wonderful, & experimental mid-budget RPGs. It's on us to show up and support them! o/
~The Eldorado Gate Corner's finally here~
Everyone can hop on over here and read over 12,000 words covering all seven discs of Capcom's epic Japan-only Dreamcast RPG!
Hey if you're excited about the upcoming Panzer Dragoon Zwei remake you'll want to take a look at this hyper-detailed breakdown of the game's scoring formulas/route changes/Lagi stats & evolve points/boss strategies/ADEC system/secret bonuses I wrote:
I am not fond of "The greatest game you've never played" statements, but in Sword and Fairy's case that sadly might be true. This Chinese RPG deserves to be revered as a titan of the genre:
Every MGS boss:
-I long for battle
-Did you know I trained with the FBI, SOS, TNT, and BBC?
-*weird magical power demonstration*
-Only you can fight me
-*bleeds out for ten minutes, talking all the while*
-FMV cutscene of nuclear things
-War is bad
-Thank you for killing me

The Sakura Wars Corner is a collection of articles, images, GIFs, and video clips examining every facet of the first two games in the series, as well as many of the lesser known spinoffs across four different formats.
#SEGAForever
Woah~
How is Sengoku Turb this pretty?! When I was a kid and dreamed of actually playing a "silicon graphics" game, this is exactly what I had in mind :O
I know I keep saying it but please bookmark (and then visit!) all those little sites you use to while away your morning commute or scratch a niche itch.
~Search engines don't work for us~
~You will probably never find us again if you don't make a proper note~
DekaVoice, a gorgeous detective game for the PS2 where you use your voice to command your dog, interrogate suspects, and more:
(I should play this one again and give it a proper article)
1 year and 53,000+ words later... it's finally ready! I've written an in-depth article on every single one of the 33 games in the Sega Ages 2500 series, covering remixed modes, optional 3D glasses, secret menu features, and more!
Forgive me for starting the day with a little whinge but this excessively US-centric view of retro gaming, to the point where ~one region~ is reframed as "Everywhere except Japan and Europe", isn't just ridiculous but actively harmful to honest efforts to record gaming history
🧵~
Going to pick out and repost a few of my favourite articles from this year - I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them! :D
Let's start with King's Field Additional I, a real treat of a dark fantasy dungeon crawler:
Can I ask my Twitter pals for some advice: Are short video clips like the one below interesting?
Not perfect plays or commentary (beyond the tweet text that goes with them), but just sharing a little bit of a neat game in motion - would that be something you'd want to see?
It's easy to laugh at this - because it's funny - but this really was the prevailing attitude at the time and in the context of the era 32bit 2D kinda felt like fiddling at the margins, better versions of things we'd seen over and over already on everything ever
I love it when you find an old MSX game called DENSETSU NO LEGEND OF DEATH BETRAYAL III with the most beautiful gothic cover art you've ever seen in your life and when you play it it's a flip-screen platformer with six different stat gauges and your goal is to collect 20 keys
Alright, here we go! Let's take a look at N64 "Communication Adventure" Wonder Project J2, a beautiful game with a heart of gold - and some really painful problems...
TIL people have no real idea how "ridiculously large" and "completely unusable" old handhelds supposedly are.
So! Here they are next to a Switch for comparison.
Tl;DR: IT'S 2021. NEW PHONES ARE BIGGER THAN OLD PORTABLE TVS. PLEASE STOP SAYING ANYTHING BIGGER THAN AN OG GB'S HUGE
Now available for everyone!
PAL games are not retro gaming's funny little joke. PAL games deserve to be preserved, researched, respected, and re-released.
