This is what we do.
The Matsumoto Castle Gun Corps is a shooting display team from the Japanese Alps. We use samurai era guns and practice hōjutsu; the Way of the Gun.

Larger guns are known as ozutsu. Given that they would only have one shot and took a long time to reload, they were normally found in the hands of samurai gunners who would be expected to use their greater skill and courage to take on high value targets. #侍 #火縄銃 #砲術
Large caliber guns known as ozutsu (大筒) had a caliber of over 26mm. These heavy guns were often carried by samurai gunners who would be expected to find and take on the most difficult targets

Western media at times, portrayed the samurai as a class of warriors that disdained the use of firearms. Conversely, Japanese media has featured the samurai and their skill at arms, including matchlocks, in art, movies, dramas, anime, manga, novels…

Although one of the most famous uses of guns in samurai warfare was the Battle of Nagashino in 1575; one of the first recorded uses of firearms was the Battle of Uedahara in 1548.

The Matsumoto Castle Gun Corps train at a gunnery range far away from the city. Hōjutsu, was originally conceived in 1543, as a way to formalize gunnery training in feudal Japan. It was practiced until 1868; that means 325 years of samurai gunnery. #侍 #砲術 #火縄銃

Although bows could fire faster than guns; matchlocks had unparalleled power on the battlefield and could easily penetrate armor, cover and cause very traumatic injuries. Don’t bring a sword to a gunfight.

Samurai also carried guns. It was the samurai that trained the ashigaru in there use; led them into battle and ordered tens of thousands of guns into production.
As they could also afford custom guns, samurai used larger caliber guns along with other weapons.

Rate of fire was a significant drawback for matchlock type guns. Although techniques were developed to increase speed, this area of gunnery did not improve significantly until the end of the samurai era.

Firearms arrived in Japan in 1543. The history is well documented. The samurai lord Tanegashima Tokitaka introduced ‘western’ style weapons after encountering Portuguese adventures that arrived in his domain 🙇♂️
The ignition device on a hinawaju (Japanese matchlock) is a simple spring/lock system. When guns were introduced in 1543 the ability to recreate and produce these firing mechanisms was also introduced; meaning the armies of Japan could now equip ‘modern’ guns #侍 #火縄銃 #砲術
Not all warriors during the samurai era were men. There were also female warriors known as onna-musha (女武者). Like the samurai they were trained in the use of weapons and would be expected to fight in defence of their household, family or clan’s honour.

Matchlocks worked best from preprepared defenses -where the gunner would be relatively safe during the loading process. However it was sometimes to move into new firing positions, during a breakthrough or to counter flanking actions.
