Cops are given a ton of power in our justice system. Their word can put people in prison.
So - if law enforcement officials are untruthful, Colorado law is supposed to give
@PostColorado
the chance to decertify them.
But
@allisonsherry
and I found flaws in this system. 🧵

What you went through is absolute horseshit and I’m so sorry that happened. Great reporting makes the powerful uncomfortable.
Please let me know if I can help in any way.
Nearly dying on the job a few years ago made me realize that I can’t wait for the distant future to pursue my dreams.
So — I’m moving to New Zealand with my partner after nearly 5 years of producing award-winning and law-changing investigative data journalism in Colorado.
A woman has been hiking the Colorado Trail to bring attention to the lack of diversity and the economic disparities on the trails - and Patricia Cameron just finished.
She also founded Blackpackers to help introduce minorities to the outdoors.

I did it.
✅ 34.1 miles
✅ ~ 6,000 ft elevation gain/loss
✅ 4 days solo backpacking in Teton bear country carrying at least 50 pounds.
I cried tears of relief when I got back to my car. This has been a fixation for 8 months and it’s surreal to have done what I set out to do.
At Flatirons Health & Rehab, staff members took turns putting out the flames with a fire extinguisher.
Nearby facilities sent vans & buses to get 42 residents to safety.
The fire was blocks away as the last person left.

I’ll forever be grateful to cut my teeth as an investigative data journalist among some of the best in the business.
I often feel hopeless at the state of mental health in journalism. But a news director told me he took my mental health tips to other leaders across the company to share this advice about how to support their people.
It’s spectacular! We can change the industry for the better.
A bit of good news from another Louisville facility. Stacey (wouldn't give me last name but said she could talk more in an hour) said all staff and patients are safely out from Flatirons Health and Rehab.

Instead of getting mad at

It’s infuriating when agencies whine when they have to do their job. Taxpayer dollars have already gone to the creation of those docs.

I’ll be freelancing for Colorado and New Zealand news organizations starting in November.
And - I’ll be spending a lot of time in the New Zealand wilderness on sabbatical.
The plan is to come home to Colorado after a year. I’m scared, but I don’t think I’ll regret this 😅
It looks like Coloradans got the message about the drive-in vaccination site near the Aurora Municipal Center. I’m not sure how many people are here for boosters.
The line makes a couple loops around this parking lot. I’ll let you know how long it takes to get through.

Appreciate the reporting that went into this story. Thanks for linking to the previous coverage of my

More people that live outside of Colorado came to the state to get an abortion in 2020, up to about 13% of all abortions.
That's 1,343 abortions for non-residents, a high since 1,032 in 2018.
This is from

Data shows that women showed up to vote in CO.
Of registered Dem voters who returned ballots, 60% were women. The largest group of Democrats to vote so far was women ages 55-74. More than 1 in 5 Democrats who voted were in that demographic.
@9WantsToKnow
CO doesn't have enough hospital beds if the state follows the trajectory of past pandemics. The potential swing in these numbers horrify me.
Whether or not the hospital system gets throttled all at once depends on if you STAY HOME.

Something pretty freaking cool happened this week. I won a Murrow!
This has been a goal ever since I became a journalist, and especially since I was a wee intern at
@CBSNewsRadio
and became engrossed in the legend of Edward R. Murrow.
The winning piece:
I've gotten DEATH THREATS for tweeting at people during breaking news to see if they would like to share their story & help the nation understand the tragedy they are going through. Mass shootings are horrific. I don't reach out to people with the intent to traumatize.
@ZackNewsMan
@olarrysmom
He’s doing his job, and he’s being respectful. Social media is like a digital town square. If someone stands in the square and announces, “My son was shot,” a good journalist will ask if she would like to share her story. She can decline or ignore the reporter. Or she can talk.
I noticed one address kept coming up while sifting through PPP data.
$2.3 million in tax dollars went to allegedly save 99 jobs at businesses like a VHS video rental store in one Denver office building.
It seemed fishy, so
@jeremyjojola
started digging...
@9WantsToKnow
Finally! I can talk about this. Some of you remember this tweet. I found something that made my heart race when I was going through government databases. A case of fraud involving $2.3 million in COVID funds. Follow this thread...

Middle & high school students in CO - apply to the

It’s a free journalism camp designed to get more kids interested in the profession, esp from underrepresented & diverse communities.
Deadline is 6 p.m. on May 31.
Trying to squeeze in as much time in the Colorado backcountry as possible. Featuring freezing dips into alpine lakes, fireweed plants and shooting stars.
On average, one-in-seven Denver Public Schools students didn’t engage with classes from home. And the gap was worse among schools with more lower income students.
