Three years ago, I, a 32-year-old woman at the time, started learning HTML, CSS and JS on my own.
Now I've been in my job as a front-end developer and accessibility specialist for 2 years and became a GDE (Google Developer Expert).
Consistency and curiosity made it possible.
I started programming at 32, looked for a job after 9 months (July 2021), sent 7 applications, had 4 interviews, 1 second round (no job offer), and 1 job offer.🥳
Now I want to focus on helping you make it as a developer too by sharing my experience. ♥️

SHE GOT THE JOB 🥳🥳🥳
Another one of my dear followers finally got a job after updating her CV.
Wish you a great start at your first day at work. 🍀
Who‘s next? 😎
After 9 months of learning frontend and many listenings to Twitter spaces by the amazing
@DThompsonDev
I am officially starting my job hunt. 😎feeling pumped 💪 Who is joining me on this exciting journey? 😁
Yesterday I developed my very first calculator using JS.
This is just the beginning - I should have done this a year ago. I made the mistake of jumping straight into React after HTML/CSS without touching JS. I often miss basics that I am now catching up. It's never too late. 🫡
My mentee is now officially in phase 2 of her journey to becoming a frontend developer. Today we installed Node, Git, and VSCode, created the first repo on GitHub, and tried out various Git commands. This is going to be a fun time (at least for me 😜)
I was not good at coding. Instead of giving up, I started to focus on soft skills in combination with some other tech skills. That has paid off.
This combination helped me land my first job in tech!

During Hacktoberfest I have to create a lot of Pull Requests (PR, also called Merge Request MR).
Not every project provides templates on how to write a good PR, so here are my tips:
I'm finally earning enough money, and I've got myself a new apartment and a cozy space to code in my new home.
Thank you, Julia, for all the hard work and the decision to become a developer 😌.
No, I'm not embarrassed because once again I tried to contribute to open source and failed because I forgot to add .json to the end of the filename (this was also the only thing to do at all, add a json file) 😂
I finally met
@eddiejaoude
in person. Not only is he an inspiring GitHub star, but his content has been crucial in my journey to become a dev. He introduced me to open source where I am now not only a contributor but a maintainer myself. Thanks Eddie, it was great meeting you. 😇
I am now writing React with TypeScript. I always thought TS was too hard for me to understand, but to eventually become a senior, I need to improve as much as I can and start learning it, no matter how difficult it may seem at first. 💪

After 6 months of hard (and of course good 😜) work, my temporary contract has been converted into a permanent one.
Already 6 months in my first technical job, wooooow 😯 Time goes by so freaking fast.

This week I turned down a job offer.
A year ago I would have done anything to get this job, but due Corona it was not possible.
My area of expertise has changed. I now deal with accessibility and can't let it go for a front end job where accessibility doesn't matter.
I successfully completed the 5th part of the Google UX Design Certification "Create High-Fidelity Designs and Prototypes in Figma"
Improving my design skills in Figma and creating a case study for my project was fun and interesting. I finished my first portfolio project. 🙃
She got the job 🥳🥳🥳
Today a message reached me that makes me really happy!!! With a little help from me, one of my followers finally got a job in tech!
Your words reached me! That's why I'm doing this! 💜

During Hacktoberfest, I contributed e.g. to the FreeCodeCamp developer quiz. While doing so, I had the idea to add a section with accessibility questions, but Quincy had to approve it first.
I was notified that he liked the idea and there are now a11y questions. Yes 😇
In order to learn about accessibility at an early stage of web production, I signed up for Google's UX design course. I have already successfully completed the first phase. 😌
I completed Foundations of User Experience (UX) Design!

The right time to get into accessibility is NOW!
And here are 3 good reasons why. It doesn't really matter what your reason is, and whether all of them apply to you or just one.
I had another wonderful meeting, this time, with the Eddies 100K Giveaway Mentoring Session Winner

It took quite a while to find a suitable date, but here we are, finally having a good time, talking about goals, struggles and achievements 😎.
How can you make your GitHub profile interesting as an open source contributor?
Make the organizations you are a member of public on your GitHub profile so that everyone can see them immediately.

Messages like THIS are the reason I am trying my best to help as many ppl as possible get into tech too.
Seeing how others get inspired bc of my story really motivates me a lot 💪
Thanks everyone for all the kind messages I am receiving. 🥰
I'm taking a week off to fully recharge my batteries, and come back even stronger. 😎
Lots of running, cycling, swimming and hiking and wearing

Have written a few dev posts in advance. 🤓
See you all soon.

One way to stay productive is to find the right tools that make working on side projects and creating content more convenient and easier.
Tools I use regularly:
🐙 GitHub
👩💻 VS Code
📓 Notion
🧑🎨 Canva
🎶 Spotify (who codes without music?)
🎨 Figma
What a lovely surprise to be voted Favorite Author of the Year! ☺️
Thank you
@ThePracticalDev
for providing us writers with such a great platform to showcase our skills and share our knowledge with the community!
My side projects keep me very busy lately 🥵. The thing that gives me a good balance is sports: yoga, running, walking, cycling... .
My brain needs to be able to switch off in order to give 100% again the next day 😎
Take breaks!

I've just come from a coffee chat.
Coffee chats are a great way to improve empathy and emotional intelligence. I meet all these amazing people from all over the world, with their different cultures, their dreams. It‘s so enriching and exciting. I’m greatful for this experience!
It's time to take your HTML skills to the next level with a little introduction to some HTML tags that people often forget even exist.

After applying for a developer position at my dream company 7 months ago, I finally got a call asking if I was still interested. Unfortunately, they only have part-time positions open at the moment - maybe next time.😉
I got a raise after only 9m, & have already reached my 2y salary goal. 🥳
This would not have been possible without this great tech Twitter community that is so supportive & motivating. 🙏
I thank EVERYONE who believes in me (& of course myself for all the hard work 😜)
September was all about learning, prep & content creation. I got up no later than 6am to start working on personal stuff before starting the full time job. On the weekends, oc, side projects throughout. 🤯
Time for a short break before Hacktober starts for me too. 😎

As a soon-to-be junior dev, we tend to focus solely on our coding skills bc we believe that's what recruiters are looking for.
Even though good coding skills are indeed an advantage when applying for a job, you can also score points with good soft skills. ☝️
Celebrating 1 year in my first tech job. 😄
I still can't believe I made it into tech - with my background, at my age.
The year was great. I learned a lot about tech and most importantly about myself and how I see my future.
The last months of this year will be exciting. 🔥
I successfully passed the accessibility exam 🥳.
I couldn't be more proud. Over the last couple of months I studied really hard to improve my knowledge on accessibility, and it paid off.
Thanks to the great opportunity by Eddie Jaoude’s 100K give away a few weeks ago I had an amazing mentoring session and coffee chat with

Talked about my fav topics: accessibility, projects to show of in an interview, next steps in coding journey, and much more
I applied for jobs that required 2-3 years of experience. I still got the interview. 👩💻
Just do it! Apply for the company/job that interests you, no matter what the job posting says. ☝️

I'm not sure what the job position I'm in is actually called, maybe Accessibility Engineer or something, but the last few weeks have just been awesome.

Writing the first blog post is difficult. I struggled for a long time, and then just did it, about a topic I didn't even really know about, but had solved my problem at that time. It is now my 2nd most viewed article.
Whatever is stopping you, just do it!
Today I found a gift in my mailbox as a sign of my achievement of being one of the top 7 authors on Thank you so much

Nobody is perfect, but you are likely to be trusted more if you are self-aware and can admit your mistakes. Use these to show progress and improvements rather than copying the best version of your code on the first try.
Be real, not perfect.
Another meeting with my mentee today. She is getting better and better, slowly getting used to VS code and creating, pushing and merging branches with Git.
I am proud of her 😇.
