This is an incredible use of CGI, and is exactly what it should be used for.
Set extension is one of the most popular (and unnoticed) methods of compositing, and the fact you didn't realize it was CG until after the movie, is the point.

PERFECT example of "Show Don't Tell."
Everyone (incl. Kylo) saw Vader as strong. Powerful. But for Vader, his suit was a prison. Nobody knew that except Luke & Obi-Wan.
Kylo removing the mask and being unscarred, not needing it, tells us he idolizes Vader for the wrong reasons.

Oftentimes, it is easier & cheaper to have your VFX team comp a wall into a shot you filmed on a soundstage (or different city/building/whatever) than it is to fly your cast & crew onsite, ship gear, hire local crew, get permits, etc etc.

Long story short, whether it's set extension, CG props, VFX-covered suits, whatever, it's used more than you think.
Editing is often (but not always) an invisible art. If you didn't notice, and needed a rage tweet to tell you that it's bad... it's not.

Sometimes, even when you ARE on site, IN THE RIGHT CITY, you discuss a shot with your DP and say, "Well damn it all, the blocking for this shot would work SO MUCH BETTER if there was a wall right HERE!" but there isn't.

It drives home tension, whether we're up close and fast or far away and watching

Yes, a professional editor DID cut this scene. You don’t like it, and that’s okay! Because art is subjective! But technical skill =/= personal preference, and this is a very skilled edit and was executed well from a technical pov, regardless of preference. Peace :)

Probably shoulda swapped with Red K Clark from Smallville, closer to what I was going for.

ST based their font off Stephen King books, like Needful Things/Firestarter. This poster's rad bc the font is a similar callback to retro horror, the poster seems to be paying homage to older horror posters, AND the text is interacting w the subject. Just cool design all around!

Yes but the reason for Vader’s helmet & suit was to keep him alive (& under Palpatine’s thumb), and the reason for Kylo’s was to copy Vader.
I was just expressing how this one shot shows off the themes & character decisions well. Has nothing to do with other past characters 👍
