Charging people for quotes is a horrible idea that sets a terrible precedent that should not be normalized or supported under any circumstances. You're practically paying a fee for the chance to get chosen for a commission. 🧵

Being a maid during a furry con must be the weirdest experience. Every room is a mystery black box. Who knows tf they can find. Anything from 15 Blahaj stacked on the bed surrounded by a fuck ton of balloons to a oversized plushie that spans half the room is fair game

Wow, enlighten me how you know this is a fursuit only picture? Because when I was there, I'm pretty sure it was announced as a group picture of the entire con, where most people just happen to have a suit.

There's always the ONE (or two) ppl who insists on being in the front, not in suit, in every single Fursuits ONLY picture or video that anyone ever plans to make.
And they always have some excuse as to why they couldn't not be there.
"I'm their handler" or whatever the case.

This would be okay as long as you'd get refunded if you're not picked - but this doesn't seem to be the case.
Imagine if an artist opens up and says "Hey, I'm open for commissions! Send me your ideas and 5$ and you'll have a chance I pick your commission!". That's ridiculous.

The reasoning why this is done here is pretty clear. I don't think it's malice. It's likely to reduce the amount of "fake" submissions for quotes or people that had no actual intent of purchase from the start, as well as covering for the cost of time.

I wrote myself a really nifty telegram bot. I can forward it media/picture/videos etc., and it will automatically upload that to my cloud sorted by the person who sent the message.

a) Accept the fact that there will be unserious submissions and no-shows. Calculate the time that you need to spend, and raise your prices accordingly. You shouldn't only charge for the time you spend making fursuits, but every part of your business, including client aquisition.

And I have full understanding that this is an slog. But this is taking people's money to what amounts to a glorified "lottery" ticket - except there's no luck involved, if your design isn't better than the rest, it will NEVER get picked. Thanks for giving me 5$ for a quote!

This opens up a lot of potential for exploitation, as well as requiring zero transparency into what's happening. And if the only reason is to reduce spammy submissions, 1$ would work just as well as 5$.

for changing her quote pricing, meaning that you only have to pay for a quote a single time, and it's free forever afterwards!
This mostly removes the main issue, namely the abuse potential.

b) Go ahead and do require a payment for a quote. But either do it as a hold on a credit card or similar, or refund everyone at the end of the cycle. There's plenty of ways to do this, plenty of payment authorizers have APIs for placing holds on cards.

Do you genuinely think that all makers, when presented with a design that they know they will never pick, will spend the same amount of time on a quote compared to designs that they like? What's to stop them to throw out a random number, knowing they'll never have to honor it?

it's completely reasonable to spend funds on equipment, as money lying around will just deprecate in value, and new equipment can speed up processes rapidly.
However, there should always be enough liquid money to deal with cancellations or emergencies.

I think there's a broader meaning to the term quote that I realized.
For me, a quote is a price tag, at most a list of things that will be done. Not a full breakdown of every material, and everything that will be used.
In fact, fur searching and matching in my experience...

I've never seen a service that asks me to pay for consulation, where you afterwards will have no guarantee that they'll take the case.
Would you consult a lawyer, pay them 100 bucks, and the only they say is "Ok, it costs 5k to represent you. I might not do it tho. 🤷♀️"
