Disheartening to watch the trend in high school basketball w/ players transferring from their hometown teams. Some of the best memories / friendship I have to this day come from high school bball. Wouldn't thought of leaving the guys I grew up playing with for "greener pastures".

If you really want to learn how to Coach, do it at a D2 or NAIA. You’ll learn admissions, financial aid, compliance all while recruiting, scouting, and coaching on the floor. Often the only asst. on staff. No where to hide. Required to “figure it out.”

Currently, the top 10 scorers in NCAA D1 basketball are at schools which would be classified as low or mid major. All 10 COULD play high major basketball but they choose FIT, not level, and are reaping the rewards!

Kid is relentless about how bad he wants to play professionally. In most cases, they are specifically excited about possibilities outside the US.
But they won't consider going to college outside of a 2 hour window from home...

Weird recruiting world we’re living in…
Guys who chase the highest level and don’t produce very well could get left in the portal without a scholarship.
Find the right fit at a lower level (D2 or NAIA), put up numbers, and you might end up with MM+ recruitment from there.

Something I thought was powerful that no one is really talking about is what Roy Williams said about MJ. I’m sure I’ll misquote this but it was something to the effect:
“He was the only player I’d ever seen that had the ability to turn it on and off and it was never off.”

What’s even harder to grasp is being good enough to get a D1 scholarship doesn’t always mean you’re good enough for top D2 and NAIA scholarships. D1 gets 12. D2 gets 10. NAIA gets 8. In most cases, top teams at our level don’t need the 13th scholarship player at low-mid D1’s.
Being good enough to get a D1 scholarship and good enough to play D1 & keep that scholarship are two entirely different things!
