This was a historic earthquake. Looks like the 3rd strongest in NC history. Others like this was a 5.5 magnitude quake around Asheville in 1916 and a 5.2 in Mitchell County in 1926. The last earthquake to cause any damage in NC was the Henderson County earthquake back in 1981.
Love you all! I will see you again August 29th! Introducing my son to the world this week so I am taking a long paternity leave to spend all I have with him!
@wcnc
I am so sorry Statesville! I was so focused on the storms this evening I never mentioned that highs tomorrow could break a record and even melt aluminum! A big thank you to a friend of
@SarahSFrench

August 1, 2018 was my first day here at
@wcnc
and it has been an amazing time ever since! Thanks for being awesome Charlotte! Kim, JT, Romeo and I love it here and look forward to many more legendary years to come!
In the news business, we are all family. And our family lost two greats yesterday. This was the hardest story I have ever covered and my heart goes out to the families, co-workers and friends of these two amazing people. You two are loved and will forever live in our hearts.
A BIG SHOUTOUT to

@wcnc
weekends! Can I get a WOOP WOOP!?
This is the norm now in
#Charleston
. Wind gusts will continue to pop to 60-75 mph but the non-stop rain has dozens of roads under water and major flooding expected early afternoon during high tide.
Models are starting to agree a little more. Euro keeps this around longer and GFS still has more of a freezing rain, sleet mix through Charlotte. These will change but this is trending more and more as a significant winter storm.
@wcnc
WHY SNOW FORECASTING ISN'T FUN: Snow is looking more and more like a possibility for the Charlotte area. But these two long range models are polar opposites. Euro has 1-2 inches and the GFS has a historic Carolina snow event.

will be declared the winner and win $1,250 for their choice charity!!! I have the honor of being one of the 5 judges!
Long range models starting to agree. Up to 1-2 inches of snow possible Friday night for the Greater Charlotte area. Up to 4"+ for the Mountains. This will likely change.
@wcnc
A MAJOR Nor' Easter could develop starting over the Carolinas before turning and rapidly intensifying up into New England heading into this weekend.
@wcnc
STILL TOO FAR OUT: Yes... There is a chance for snow Friday night into Saturday but the confidence is low and as you can see there is not a lot of agreement besides some snow in the Mountains.
@wcnc
Not a good situation.
#Invest97
looks to rapidly intensify over the next few days. Potentially making landfall in the Florida Panhandle as a major hurricane. A lot can change but people need to be ready.
@wcnc
One of the best Meteor Showers of the year is coming soon! This year it will be best seen from 3AM to sunrise on the morning of the 14th (the moon will have set at this point).
@wcnc
In 24 hours, we have seen a solid pressure drop in

and a sustained wind increase of 40 mph. This increase will be even greater over the next 24 hours.

's poll would be my dinner plans! ACE No. 3 was amazing. Thanks for voting and this is my NEW favorite burger in Charlotte!
FRIDAY has a forecast high of 31°. This would be the first time since January 7, 2018 that a high temperature in charlotte was below freezing. That is 1473 days or over 2.1 million minutes ago.
@wcnc
TONIGHT THERE WILL BE A FULL LUNAR ECLIPSE! THIS IS THE FIRST ONE IN AMERICA SINCE 2015!
The total event is expected to last 3 hours and 17 minutes but the main event (when the moon turns red) will last 62 minutes.
Be out there by at least midnight to catch an awesome sight!
BIG CHANGE: Things were trending south yesterday and that is now the forecast! We are no longer in the HIGH or even low risk for severe storms. The rain this morning is stabilizing us. We still have a chance for a few storms this afternoon but that should be about it.
Yesterday was technically the "longest day" of the year but today's daylength is only 1 second shorter wherever you are. Don't feel down that the days are technically getting shorter. In Charlotte, we only lose about 22 minutes of daylight over the next 30 days.
Happy National Safe Place Selfie Day! Tornado season is in high gear right now, so do you know where your safe place is? Ours is our bedroom closet but as my wife says “that is her

Panthers and Panther fans are winning with wall to wall sunshine today. A gently breeze around 10 mph may blow a napkin or two at the tailgate but other than that... it is a perfect late October day! That deserves a WOOHOO!
You may have heard of the informal metric the "Waffle House Index" to determine the effect of the storm.
This Waffle House off of the Savannah Highway is down to a limited menu and could have water up to their steps within the next 24 hours. They may be closing later today.
Here is an edited look at the drive from Blowing Rock to Boone. Roads are actively getting treated and salted. Main roads are getting better. Snow has been very light over the past hour.
Buoy data just clocked a 100 mph wind gust from Hurricane
#Francine
. The Noon update shows still sustained winds up to 90 mph and wind gusts as high as 115 mph. Official landfall looking to be around 7PM.
@wcnc
This was the 107th time 'Phil' or the Inner Circle of Punxsutawney have called for six more weeks of winter. I am feeling a conspiracy man! Do the lights from the stage count? However, Queen Charlotte also agreed with this prognostication!
@wcnc
A major hurricane is forecast to make landfall in Florida on Thursday. Right now a good consensus has a chance at a category 3 or stronger before landfall. This one is originating in the same spot as Hurricane Michael and could rapidly intensify like it starting on Wednesday.
Still only 2 mph away from being a category 5 hurricane. Be safe Florida.
#ian
will soon be one of the worst hurricanes in Florida's history books.
@wcnc
That’s not rain! Small sleet falling in Northwest Charlotte. This band will be short lived as we wait for the big event overnight and tomorrow morning.
Life is an adventure... especially when
