Cyclops from Uncanny X-Men 337. Oddly enough this was one of my favourite comics as a kid. Nothing happens, it's just the X-Men being sad and getting breakfast. They could have stretched this premise out over 300 issues and I would have loved it.
YOURE TELLING ME THAT this amazing cosplay of my favorite character was at NYCC and I had to find out through the Marvel IG page and not in real life 😭
Gotta shout out this guy I met with one of the most astounding pieces of fan art I’ve ever seen. The time and effort it must have taken over the years…for a one-of-a-kind LEGENDARY piece! I think he’s aiming for Alan Davis and Olivier Coipel to finish it! What’s your fave part?
1466). Jul1984.
Everyone loves this issue! In fact I’d say it’s probably one of the most beloved single issues in X-Men history. A whole lotta melodrama in this one, let’s dig in
809). Aug1982.
There are classics and then there are CLASSICS! You know this one—the epic X-Men/Teen Titans crossover featuring some astounding Simonson/Austin/Wein art. No wonder it rates
#1
on many peoples’ list of greatest inter-company crossover issues ever
1180). Oct1983.
(I say this as a huge Michael Collins fan) Other than maybe his first appearance, this is probably the best Deathlok image ever. A classic by Zeck/Beatty
Speaking of ‘83, Byrne did this piece that showed up in the September issues. He really was all over the place in the early 80s. This was used as the cover for a Marvel Byrne compendium recently
956). Jan1983.
You know this one, and if you haven’t read it already please do. One of the greatest X-Men stories of all time, and a landmark in the 1980s. Also featuring Brent Anderson doing some of the best work of his career
1222). Nov1983.
A HUGE issue and not just cuz it’s double sized! The X-Men’s 20th anniversary, an unexpected wedding, plotlines end and new ones begin, and….say it ain’t so but the last issue for Paul Smith’s legendary run before JRJR takes over near the end of this very issue
Yes obviously Wolverine losing his adamantium was a bigger moment during Fatal Attractions, but Magneto absolutely pulverizing Cable made my head explode as a kid
1718). Apr1985.
One of the most visually striking covers of the mid-80s, and one of my favorite Spidey-covers of all time. Byrne killed it with this one as the title moved on past the Milgrom era
1293). Jan1984.
One of the most cosmic Marvel issues…ever, up to that point! The Trial of Reed! The Fate of Galactus! Easily one of my favorite single issues of the decade
1139). Aug1983.
A new title joins the Marvel monthly ranks as Alpha Flight gets its own title, eh! A whole host of first appearances or references here: Puck, Marrina, Box, Madison Jeffries, Wild Child, Diamond Lil, as well as all the classic Flighters. A Byrne production
1140). Aug1983.
One of the most impactful issues of the entire 80s—Galactus consumes the Skrull Throneworld! With far-reaching impacts on the Marvel Universe still felt today…
Guys I used A.I. to extend the cover art on some classic covers! First up: extending Jim Lee’s legendary X-MEN
#1
! Didn’t you ever wonder what made up the rest of the cover? Look at all the other X-Men! And Prof X? And is that flippin’ MAGNETO on the right side?!
1137). Aug1983.
One of the most famous covers from the Smith run. Logan’s getting married! But first some Clan Yashida shenanigans. Don’t forget the BEER, Elf!
1663). Feb1985.
You all know this Zeck/Austin classic! On the short list of…best Dr. Doom covers ever, best 1980s Marvel covers, most DRAMATIC covers ever…one of the defining pieces of art to showcase the indomitable will and fortitude of Victor von Doom
I’ll be back in a few days—my wife and I just had our first child, a baby girl!
(I was unsuccessful in naming her Elektra, Gamora, Jubilation, or Koriand’r 😂)
1401). May1984.
1400 issues into the 80s and we finally hit…SECRET WARS! Whether it’s the original issues, TPBs, or omnibus you probably own this one! Zeck/Beatty with one of the most famous Marvel covers ever and the start of a monumentally important event for…everyone!
1217). Nov1983.
Took over 1200 issues in the 80s to get here, but it’s time: the start of the legendary
@WalterSimonson
run on Thor that would redefine the character forever! Heralded by the debut of Beta Ray Bill and one of the most iconic, eye catching covers of the decade
1208). Nov1983.
Sam gets his own mini! James Owsley (later to be known as Christopher Priest) with his first mainstream Marvel work, and Paul Smith with the classic cover
1166). Sep1983.
Feels a little repetitive to keep saying it for every month, but it’s true! Another legendary Paul Smith cover, and one of the most famous X-covers of the mid-80s. Finishing up the team’s Japanese sojourn…
1173). Oct1983.
Spidey finally unmasks the Hobgoblin and it’s…some guy named Lefty Donovan! Well that’s over and we can all go home right?! 🙃 No way this will drag on for *checks notes* 15 more years…
1291). Jan1984.
The famous Snowbird issue! Appropriate since a lot of the East Coast is covered in snow right now and this is what it looks like outside my window ❄️
1386). Apr1984.
Spinning out of Secret Wars, joining the FF it’s…ah you know who! One of the biggest roster additions ever in the team’s history (this issue is ALSO the “first” appearance of one of the most controversial FF characters of all time!)
1705). Apr1985.
That one mid-80s DD cover by Barry Windsor-Smith, 16 years after his first one! With that characteristic exquisite and eye-catching coloring
1099). Jul1983.
Believe it or not this is the first Wolverine-guest-starring-on-someone-else’s-cover since…his first appearance back in Incredible Hulk
#181
from 1974!
1374). Apr1984.
The Dark Phoenix Saga was SUCH a monumental moment in Marvel history that not even 4 years later they published a whole special devoted to the controversial ending—and showed what could have been if Phoenix had survived!
1550). Oct1984.
Reaching THIS issue a few days after the X-Men ‘97 adaptation: a happy coincidence! “Lifedeath,” one of the best written CC stories from his long run and with some amazing BWS art. A highlight of the 1980s and one of the definitive Ororo Munroe stories ever
768). Jul1982.
Everyone loves this cover! One of the most famous Avengers covers of the 80s (I even made a movie version a while back 😂) as two new Avengers join: one old and one new.
A classic by Hannigan/Breeding! Who would have been your choice?
I had meant to point out that
#300
was the conclusion to a several-month stretch of corner box Hulk reverting to his savage state, reflecting the ongoing comics. One of the coolest Marvel cover box concepts ever! (graphic by )
1545). Oct1984.
A massive issue—one of the most important Hulk comics of the 80s. A completely savage Hulk hits Manhattan like…well, like an earthquake (totally a coincidence today I swear), leading to a catastrophic ending. Bret Blevins with the classic cover
1671). Feb1985.
Aw say it ain’t so! A long-running title concludes with the last issue of Marvel Team-Up; the next volume of MTU wouldn’t launch until 1997. A classic as Spidey and the X-Men team up against Juggernaut and a Juggernautified Black Tom, with this nice BWS cover
1185). Oct1983.
Spider-Man an Avenger? LOL be serious that’ll never happen. Milgrom/Sinnott with the cover, the Avengers hit 20 years old, and they get a new logo to boot
918). Dec1982.
An iconic, classic cover for the birth of Binary! And the last issue for the great Dave Cockrum before Paul Smith starts his run the next month
1405). May1984.
There are comic book nerds and then there are comic book NERDS 😂 This is for us! The final issue of the original OHOTMU and it has every detailed schematic you could possibly want (That wasn’t already covered in the prior issues!) Byrne/Rubinstein with the cover
1252). Dec1983.
Another reprint series, this one reprinting some 60s X-Men stories. Check out that spectacular cover by Zeck/Palmer! (Bobby needs to use his powers to comically trip over massive villains more often)
1226). Nov1983.
Introducing one of the great roster revamps in Marvel history. Love the original Core Four Defenders looking approvingly from the corner box 😌 Potts/Sienkiewicz with the cover
1146). Aug1983.
One of the most famous Black Widow covers of all time. By the great George Perez—this was essentially his only big Marvel work between the end of his Avengers run in ‘80 and Infinity Gauntlet in ‘91!
1195). Oct1983.
It’s a great cover by Plunkett/Weiss, although maybe a tiny bit misleading as the old Defenders crew is the focus this issue. Changes were coming soon though!
Millions of people visiting Times Square every year, but none of them know they can get this fantastic Nightcrawler issue for less than a buck at the Midtown Comics right there 😌
1418). May1984.
One of the more famous Iron Man covers of the mid 80s, as Tony’s long battle with alcoholism comes to an end here. McDonnell/Mitchell continuing their excellent run
If you’ve been following this account for the last 2.5 months, congrats! You are now up to speed on one-tenth of the entirety of Marvel Comics in the 1980s: good, bad, and ugly. What a year! Just nine more to go…😂
1295). Jan1984.
Jack of Hearts gets his first (and to this point) only series! Art by George Freeman, who only did a handful of Marvel issues outside of this mini—shame, since his work looks pretty fantastic
