On this day 16th March 1980, the Army Ranger Wing (Sciathán Fianóglach an Airm) was established. From its humble beginnings the unit and the personnel who volunteer to undergo the selection process have gone on from strength to strength.

Today members of the Army Ranger Wing Association (ARWA) will celebrate the 43rd Anniversary of the establishment of the Army Ranger Wing. Former members of the unit will travel near and far and assemble at the designated rendezvous point, remembering their former colleagues.

In 1993/94 members of the ARW were integrated into No 1 and No 2 Irish Transport Company, UNOSOM II Somalia. While based in Baidoa, they provided the much-needed security element to the transport company on their weekly convoy to the capital Mogadishu.

Monochrome Monday… The Ranger in the photograph went on to be one of the more influential NCO’s in the early days of the ARW. While the training methods may have changed over the years, he set the standards by which all Rangers in the ARW much achieve.

Operating under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1264, the International Force East Timor (INTERFET) mission was established, ARW personnel deployed to the region in October 1999. The ARW was eventually replaced by Infantry platoons from the Defence Forces.

Under the leadership and watchful eye of Chief Instructor Infantry School Comdt Eamon Quigley, the first Irish Ranger Training was introduced in the late 1960s. It was Col. Quigley’s Report in 1979 that led to the establishment of the ARW in March 1980.

and Ambassador Buckley visited the memorial for Sergeant Derec Mooney, who died tragically in Liberia in 2003.
Sgt. Mooney served with Irish Defence Forces as part of the UN peacekeeping mission in Liberia.
