Might be the worst team to sign with in Japan. Their manager is the most archaic in global baseball. He'll blow his arm to shreds in a matter of weeks. Then call him out in the media for being a wuss. That's the Tatsunami experience.
. If Yankees are really “hell bent” on winning a championship, they need to go get another starter to enhance their talented yet perilously thin rotation (3 ideas here and where they stand)
Most MLB fans have become familiar with Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Roki Sasaki, but very few are familiar with this stud right here, Shunpeita Yamashita. He has a chance to be just as good, if not better, than both. He ended his Pacific League 2023 ROY campaign with a 1.61 ERA.
I think most Yankee fans are oblivious to how good Chase Hampton really is. He's the best pitching prospect this system has seen since Luis Severino (in my opinion). Trading him for a rental that won't re-sign here is borderline malpractice. Very excited to see him debut in 2024.
Some interesting Yamamoto notes are here from Mark Feinsand's latest piece this morning. He's met with all the rumored suitors; he thinks he "could make his decision in the next few days" and that "some have now characterized the Yankees as the favorite to sign Yamamoto.".
I do think it's noteworthy that Tyler Glasnow has the same agent as Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Joel Wolfe. Negotiating an extension for a top of the line starter with a team that is heavily pursuing your top free agent client.
This developing story on Roki Sasaki is so multi-dimensional that it's difficult to do it justice in a single Twitter thread, but I'll do my best to break down the presently available reporting on the story and provide my own thoughts and analysis.
Having finally read the Sponichi article about Roki Sasaki demanding a posting this year, I see it is based on what MLB people said in Nashville.
My MLB sources expect it to happen next year, which is still odd, but not as strange as doing it so late this year.
LeMahieu and Verdugo should be the focus of conversation in YankeeLand, not Volpe, Trevino or Holmes. The Yankees are an unserious team if they continue putting their names in the lineup everyday. They are objectively bad baseball players right now, and have been for awhile.
Someone I think could (and maybe is already) play a big role in the pursuit for Yoshinobu Yamamoto? Soichiro "Swimmy" Minami who became a minority owner of the Yankees last spring.
Prospects I'm not giving up for any of the rumoured trade targets (C. Burnes, D. Cease ,S. Bieber, E. Cabrera, etc)
Hitters:
- Jasson Dominguez
- Austin Wells
- Spencer Jones
- Roderick Arias
- George Lombard Jr
- Brando Mayea
Pitchers:
- Chase Hampton
- Will Warren
- Henry
Boone pulls Torres for dogging it but doesn't pull Verdugo for dogging it. What has Verdugo done for the Yankees to have this level of cache in the clubhouse? CUT HIM.
George Lombard Jr. has appeared in eight games thus far in ST. That's the most of any HS hitter selected in the 2023 draft. It would be tied for sixth among all hitters selected. With the mature plate approach he has, it wouldn't shock me if he starts the year at Hudson Valley.
Back when Austin Wells was a prospect there was a narrative that he was unplayable behind the plate. These "scouts" found no redeeming qualities in his defense. Fans bought into it and viewed him as a long term 1B/LF. Very, very glad to have been proven right about his defense.
@SwedeStats
Out of curiosity I skimmed through the aforementioned squad list. Found a really interesting name: Nils Ramming. 16 years old,
#1
GK for the u17 Eintracht Frankfurt team. Whats more? He was recently the 3rd GK on the A team squad that played HJK in the Conference League.
@Yankeelibrarian
The core issues of this team stems back to the offseason after the 2017 run. That was the beginning of the end. There was no team in baseball with a better future than the Yankees, the moves they made that offseason were crucial. Not properly building off 2017 killed us long term
Brian Cashman was in attendance in Chiba for the second night in a row to watch the first start back for Roki Sasaki after an oblique injury.
Here was his line: 3.0 IP 2 H 1 ER 1 BB 2 SO
He topped out at 100 mph. Brian Cashman reportedly left at the top of the 4th inning.
I take some issue with the sentiment the broadcast keeps repeating that this is Yamamoto's "biggest game of his life". It is most certainly not. He's played a handful of games that were bigger than this.
I'd flip Gleyber now. I don't see the value of playing Jazz anywhere other than 2B (with Jasson/Stanton coming back) and Gleyber's limited versatility makes him not that useful from the bench. You're also not giving him the QO so you won't get a pick back if you keep him.
Yankee fans should be cheering for Baltimore this afternoon regardless if you prefer to face them in the ALDS or not. It only serves to benefit us if either team that comes out on top has burned their 3 best starters and entire bullpen in the process.
For some reason it's hard for Yankee fans to grasp the concept that Spencer Jones may in fact be a better prospect than Jasson Dominguez. It's really close but I certainly don't fault anyone for putting Jones ahead of Dominguez. Remember, it's all subjective at the end of the day
A couple interesting notes from the
@BaseballAmerica
subscriber chat regarding the recent Top 100 list.
- They seem to think Roderick Arias has the most pure talent out of anyone in the system (and Dominguez still counts as "part of the system" fwiw)
- George Lombard Jr had
Yamamoto and it's not close. Look at his resume so far, if he retired today he'd be considered one of the greatest Japanese pitchers ever. What has any of the other pitchers listed done in professional baseball?
@Yankeelibrarian
An interesting nugget from "Sanspo":
"A source from the US baseball world revealed: The Yankees are serious about acquiring Yamamoto. It seems like they will put more effort into signing Yamamoto than Ohtani.''
@SwedeStats
They just signed Solanke for a club record fee. They also have Son (who is better as a 9) and Richarlison. I'd toss that report in the bin.
@Sotoszn28
@YankeesFanEarl
Yeah so did Robbie Ray, and more recently, but you wont see him sniffing Cy Young votes any time soon. It's 2024, he's nowhere near the same pitcher he was pre 2021. And that's before all the crap off the field.
@YankeeSource
Hard disagree here. Spencer Jones is already a better defender than Soto and Dominguez in the OF and has the upside to be better than Judge. Find someone else to play first, Jones should be in the center field to maximize his value (if you keep him), end of story.
A reminder for Yankee fans: In all likelihood, the Yankees and Yamamoto will not sign a deal on the day of their meeting. In fact, I doubt any team he's meeting with will. He'll meet all the finalists, hear their pitches, and then, after that, his agent will negotiate a deal.
The Yankees have had numerous conversations with the Rays, who have already dealt Eflin and Arozarena. Diaz, Paredes and Fairbanks could be trade targets.
@Yankeelibrarian
No one is worried that he's not going to do something. People are (rightly) worried about the moves he will make given his track record over the past 3-4 years.
With each passing hour that Flaherty to NYY trade isn't confirmed, the less of a chance it actually goes though. However, teams who have been reported to be in on Flaherty, have started to look elsewhere...
Rewind back to last offseason. Cashman says that because of Dominguez's injury, he has get two OFers. The implication here being, they planned to have Dominguez be a regular in 2024, pre-injury. I'd really like to know whats changed in the evaluation.
Brian Cashman says the Yankees need 2 outfielders, "preferably lefthanded", reinforce pitching, and notes the Yankees' infield "surplus"
"Do you try to find a lane to get [Oswald] Peraza involved? We have Gleyber Torres in the last year of his contract"
Impossible to pick one, but I'll go: The World Series MVP against Pedro Martinez, the biggest villain of the late 90s and early 2000s Yankees, and Godzilla puts on a masterclass. I love everything about it: the stakes, the matchup, the atmosphere, and of course, the AB itself.
Chase Hampton is ready to take the next step.
The RHP made a meteoric rise last season after the Yankees drafted him in the sixth round in 2022 out of Texas Tech.
He will round out his arsenal at upper levels

The most fantastical part of the Reeves world is how all it took to completely cripple the infrastructure of Gotham was a series of car bombs. There isn't a major metropolitan city on earth that is even half as vulnerable to the extent Gotham was. Adored the film regardless.
For the first time in their shared history, the Yankees and Mets are in a bare-knuckled, big-money brawl for the same superstar -- against each other, and other teams.
I would really want to see what Matt Blake and co could do with Shintaro Fujinami. I can't imagine he's getting anything over 1-2 years at a low AAV. With a full spring training to make some tweaks and adjustments, he'd become a true force out of the bullpen for Boone to use.
The Yankees backed out of Jack Flaherty trade negotiations because of a lower back issue that caused him to miss a start this month, per
@Ken_Rosenthal
. Flaherty received two injections within three weeks to treat it
Munetaka Murakami has dreamed of playing with Shohei Ohtani for years.
He is eligible to be posted after the 2025 season, he’s a power hitter who plays primarily plays 3B.
Max Muncy’s contract ends after 2025.
Are we lining up on 23 year old slugger?
Yankees rank 11th on Baseball America for overall farm system. Thats a fair and respectable ranking. I think anywhere from 8th to 13th in the league would be right. People saying this is a bottom 5 system, are either being cynical due to the state of the team or just misinformed.
@FrankiesTwoLoud
The Yankees are trying to make a World Series caliber rotation yet you want a guy who ranked outside the top 20 in the NPB for pitchers with at least 90 IP:
- ERA
- WHIP
- FIP
- HR/9 (46th among all pitchers with at least 90 IP in a contact driven league is beyond laughable)
Overreacting one way or the other to press conferences in 2024 is such a waste of time. These players and executives are PR trained up the wazoo. Just enjoy the fact that Juan Soto is a Yankee and worry about the other stuff in due time.
Starting to see Spencer Jones catch on fire in Double A the same way Jasson Dominguez did last summer. If he continues hitting this way, a Triple-A promotion in late July/early August is in the cards...
If you all thought the Cashman quote about Stanton in November was bad, check out this quote Cashman had on Kei Igawa during the time he was exiled to the minors in 2011.
@YankeesFanEarl
Grown men talking about 2017 like it was 1996 is pathetic. If you're a teenager I get it, you don't have any better memories as a Yankee fan. 2009 should be romanticized more on here tbh.
I finally got around to watching the recent Baseball America roundtable on their 2024 Top 100. It is always interesting to hear about their process behind these lists. From a Yankees perspective, they dropped some really good nuggets on Lalane, Arias, and Hampton. Check it out:
@DCFilmNews
Hollywood has conditioned people to think like studio executives. Is he a big name? No, and that shouldn't matter. Highly underrated actor, very talented, and seems perfect for what they're going for.
1. Gerrit Cole
2. Carlos Rodon
3. Clarke Schmidt
Thats my rotation for the ALDS (or Wild Card). The 4th starter for a possible ALCS and/or World Series is a tougher conversation.
Martino and Rosenthal both got information on Soto at the same time. Seems pretty easy to connect the dots here of whats going on. Its all part of the negotiation. Breathe people.
5 Yankees made this list:
- George Lombard Jr (Mentioned under subsection "Well-Rounded Up-the-Middle Guys)
- Agustin Ramirez (Mentioned under subsection "Catchers")
- Henry Lalane (Mentioned under subsection "League Source Picks")
- Carlos Lagrange (Mentioned under
This is a fascinating interview. This is a whole new side of Judge. He opened up a lot more than I thought he would. What a fascinating offseason this is going to be, good or bad.
