Finished up the ricochet code and also made it so ricochets are more likely to happen when you hit something hard such as asphalt. You can also see the ricocheting bullets hit other stuff better.

Next patch adds a cheat code to enable the AI planes to be flyable. As the name implies, they aren't designed for the player to fly so they will be wonky in various ways, and they lack detailed cockpits.

I cannot contain my excitement about how good Legendary Pilots looks. This says it all: "Unlike in any other flying game, the user experiences many other aspects of the flight, like dealing with routes and passengers, and buying and fixing their own planes in an immersive world."

The external/chase camera now have a configurable "motion" setting. Basically it uses acceleration to convey the motion of the jet and reacts especially well to things like turbulence and minor corrections. For reference: this is on almost max settings.

Million dollar plane game idea: Action flying game, but with a VN style metagame between flights. However, it's not just about cute wingmen doing cute things. That's baby stuff. Like Fire Emblem, you can also ship wingmen and base crew together, and they get into wacky hijinks.

Destroying units matters way more now that bases have supplies. If you destroy enough of their vehicles to run it out of supplies, those vehicles are gone forever. Makes vehicles much more valuable than before.

I love all the tricks used in PS1 games to keep triangle counts low. The wheel wells in Gran Turismo 2 are created using an alpha-clipped texture instead of raw geometry. I'm curious what the real geometry looks like in this area.

When flight sim grognards complain that "they don't make them like they used to", they're talking about how many old sims were about the holistic experience of being a pilot (combat or otherwise), and not so laser-focused on the flight and systems modeling of the plane itself.

After like 3-4 iterations, nav lights are finally ingame. 1. They are directional and fade out of view limits 2. When far away, they become perfect pixels 3. They support blinking 4. All of this is done in the shader so it's basically free!

Unlimited weapons option is coming in the next patch. Volume Warning 🔊 With cluster bombs, this creates explosions so loud that I've had to put a compressor on the game to prevent it from clipping like crazy.

Finally did a long-overdue revision to how cockpit rendering works. The plane exterior is no longer duplicated in the cockpit model, and instead specified meshes get hidden when in cockpit view (e.g. the third person canopy frame).

This game is already really good! Lite-sim gameplay, a huge map, multiple planes, a mission editor, a crazy damage model that almost has more in common with mech games, a really sick Macross style multi-lock mechanic, ground vehicles, radars, SAMs, a database, and even nukes.

I was messing around with the community made Haunted PSX Render Pipeline and I'm so impressed by how easy it is to really nail that look. My favorite is the way it handles reflections, which are normal based like Gran Turismo rather than true reflections.

Big milestone! The plane that spawns in is a fully data-driven plane with working landing gear, animations, ground handling, and all that jazz. This was something that old AI planes 100% could not do, but now all planes, including the player, use the same code. #gamedev

Took care of a TON of little things today, but the biggest one is the new VTOL HUD mode. When in VTOL flight, the flight path marker changes design, gets caged to the HUD, and uses the pitch ladder as a vertical speed indicator for super smooth and controlled landings.

This week has been a very "fix one thing which then exposes previously hidden bugs" week. One of the random things now fixed (and has appropriate FX) is dud bombs, i.e. bombs or weapons that impact something before arming.
