It's all over the place. The original plan was for HI3rd to be a sequel to Hoyo's previous game, so the story assumes you are aware of the characters and premise from the get go.
Plus, they did a large chunk of their storytelling through a bunch of additional manga and LNs.

Satoru Noda wrote an Ice Hokey manga called Supinamarada that unfortunately failed. But after that, he started Golden Kamuy, and that gained him notoriety.
So, after GK ended, he revived Supinamarada as Dogsred! Super cool!
