Liverpool’s much-needed evolution: Klopp’s 3-2-2-3. Having played four games in a new system, the Reds look revitalized. But what exactly has changed and how has it made Liverpool better? And what can still be improved? Tactical Analysis Thread!

One of the best midfield performances of the season from Curtis Jones. A true all-phase midfielder, capable of making a difference in all parts of the pitch. Technically secure, calm & composed, and an absolutely relentless runner. One of the best engines in the league.

People need to understand how difficult Konaté’s job really is, with the way Trent freely roams from RB. He has so many decisions to make of where/who to defend, when to jump, when to go wide, when to tuck in, etc. An extremely complicated role. Put some respect on his name.

With Liverpool’s new, superior midfield, the need for a false 9 has vanished. They now require a striker who stretches the back line & opens up space for the midfielders, rather than compressing space. It’s Darwin Núñez time.

The balls on Jürgen Klopp and Liverpool to look to go toe-to-toe with City here despite having so many key players missing. I know it’s at Anfield but going full throttle with a right side of 21 yo Quansah, 20 yo Bradley & 20 yo Elliott against full-strength city takes balls.

Klopp’s football isn’t easily replicable because the ability to play his way isn’t down to coaching or tactics. It’s down to determination & intensity; to man-management & motivation. It is Klopp’s personality, rather than football brain, that determines his style of play.

Gakpo often needs too long to sort his feet out and pull the trigger. This means his elite ball-striking is underutilized because many of his shots get blocked. Hugely detrimental to his output. Jota, for example, is the opposite. Rapid fire shooter.

If you play Trent in midfield, you either play him with license to drop into the last line as a ‘quarter-back’ OR in a KDB role in the RHS over- & underlapping as a pure creator. The former uses his deep playmaking, the latter his vision & ball-striking. Southgate does neither.

One thing Mo Salah has in abundance is technical empathy. Look at how delicately he plays this pass, perfectly weighted for Endo to strike it on his preferred foot. There’s much more nuance to someone completing a pass or not. It’s in how you complete it.

I thought it was very soft at first but I think the key is that Akanji’s arm is directly impeding Alisson’s arm while he’s trying to catch the ball. Even the slightest touch will put you off of catching something, which needs to be taken into account.

Very good analysis. Salah’s game is based around creating separation from his man rather than actually beating his man. His 1v1 dribbling game in a traditional sense has been weak the last year and a half or so, but his output remains immense & his chance creation is elite.

Salah doesn’t dribble to beat his man, he dribbles to create separation for an action, ruthlessly efficient but it doesn’t count as a dribble on “FotMob” Look how he shimmies to open up the angle to Diaz, he doesn’t need to put his fullback on the floor.

Klopp’s recent shift to a 3-2-2-3 makes Ugarte a much better fit for Liverpool. Playing ahead of a 3 & in a double pivot gives him more freedom to push up to engage in duels & win the ball back high, whereas in a 4-3-3, he would’ve had to sit far more. Would be a great signing.

Pep doesn’t think Foden & KDB can co-exist in midfield. That probably has to do with the directness & risky nature of both players on-ball, but also due to City’s out of possession structure. Would mean one of KDB or Foden would need to defend in the double pivot at times.

Girona have one thing that Barça don’t: clarity. The players’ roles & responsibilities are clear. The purpose is clear. The in possession patterns are clear. The out of possession structure is clear. Xavi doesn’t look like he has a plan to get Barça to reach their potential.

Perfect combination of self-confident swagger and teamwork. He’s arrogant & has full belief in himself, yet works his ass off for the team every minute of every game & understands that football requires every player to be selfless at times. Liverpool have a gem.

Liverpool’s recent defensive woes analysed. Is the 3-2-2-3 to blame? Klopp’s side has now played six games in their new system and conceded 10 goals – far too many for a team of their quality. What is causing this? Is the system at fault? Tactical analysis thread!

Another game in which Darwin Núñez showed how much he has improved since last season. Better weight of pass, better understanding of when to drop to link play, cleaner technical execution. Still imperfect but there's a serious No. 9 there.

Luis Diaz was not a bad signing. Proper quality wingers are difficult to come by & before his injury, he was that. He also slotted into Klopp’s style seamlessly. Energetic & plays with his heart. Replacing Mané’s output was near impossible but pre-injury he was a good signing.

Klopp’s preferred playstyle works best with physical, flying full backs. They allow the front 5 to clog the middle in counter-pressing situations and then provide width with dynamic superiority on the overlap when Liverpool gain possession. Both are key to signature Klopp play.

Whenever teams of these two played, they brought out the best in each other. Almost always matches of unbelievable physical & mental intensity. This rivalry will stand the test of time. It produced football of the highest, highest level. Thank you.

Never in the history of football has it been more important for your DM to be a physical monster. The athletic baseline of the sport is so high now, anyone who can’t keep up physically will get eaten alive. Declan Rice was worth every single penny.

Mad how different Liverpool’s intent was back then. Shorter distances to combine, numerous backwards passes to ensure final third arrival with optimal structure, moving ball from left to right repeatedly to manipulate the opposition block, etc. Patient & beautiful play.

Dominik Szoboszlai being his country’s best player, captain, leader and talisman at age 23 is incredible. He’s also led them to a 12-game unbeaten streak. True Hungary legend in the making.

I respect Liverpool’s decision to treat the summer as a rebuilding one, rather than a “win now” one, choosing not to overspend on an elite 6 in a brutal market. It’ll have positive long-term implications. However: one/two more additions would’ve made them true title contenders.

If Gravenberch could apply his athleticism and frame with anywhere near the same intensity as Jones or Szoboszlai, he’d be a cracking player. But too often he coasts through phases of matches. Liverpool need him fully switched on today.

The balance between Trent staying wide & outside the block and inverting into midfield was excellent against Arsenal. He often stayed wide in first phase but came into his “quarter back” position when Liverpool had settled possession. Good adjustment from Klopp/Lijnders.

Xabi Alonso, despite his relative coaching youth, seems like the best candidate to replace Klopp. Shown incredible coaching prowess already, knows the club, will command respect, and importantly is highly charismatic. Personality is important for Liverpool. Nagelsmann a no-no.

Liverpool’s most misguided signings recently have been Gakpo and Gravenberch. Neither filled an obvious profile need in the squad & neither embody the footballing values of Klopp’s Liverpool. Good players with technical upside, but not fit for ultra high-intensity matches.

De Zerbi’s entire game model is based around baiting a press, and he tends to struggle against teams that sit deep. La Liga has some of the nastiest, most organized low blocks in the world. Not sure the league is a good fit for him at this point.
