Don’t fall for it! Phone scammers are targeting family members of inmates at the Weld County Jail Yesterday, the WCSO jail received three phone calls within a couple hours from concerned family members of inmates regarding a phone scam demanding bail money. The scam goes like this: the scammer calls family members of WCSO jail inmates stating they need the “bail” paid. The scammer tells family members the inmate was injured or even committed suicide, and they need the bail money paid immediately. Right now, the scammer is using this phone number: (970) 318-7385. It is likely they will change up this phone number in the future, or “spoof” the WCSO jail to make their calls appear legitimate. The best thing you can do in these situations: Hang up. Immediately contact the sheriff’s office to verify the validity of the call if you are not sure. You can reach us at: Non-emergency number (970) 350-9600 9-1-1 for emergencies WCSO jail booking unit at (970) 400-3910. Remember: Law enforcement will not call and ask you for your personal information such as your social security number, or for payment over the phone. We also will not request payment from you in ANY of the following ways: • Gift cards • Any type of prepaid cards • Money transfer applications like Cash App, Zell, Paypal, or Venmo • Request you wire funds via Western Union or from any bank • Payment through a QR code or any kind of kiosk #staysafeweldcounty

Help WCSO detectives get answers about what happened to 22-month-old Brooklyn Digesualdo On Jan. 22, 2000, 22-month-old Brooklyn Digesualdo’s mother left their home in unincorporated Frederick, CO to run an errand. She left Brooklyn in the care of her boyfriend at the time, Miguel Sirio. According to Sirio, Brooklyn fell off a bed when he left the room, and short time later, he discovered she wasn’t breathing. Scammers are creating fake social media posts to play on your emotions and steal your personal information What is the harm in sharing a post like the one you see here? WCSO has received a couple of inquiries about crime-related posts circulating in our area that ask you to share and be on the lookout for one or two suspects that are on an alleged crime spree. According to a 2024 article from Detroit Fox 2, in posts like these, scammers are trying to play on your emotions to get users to share spam. Once you’ve shared a post like this, the scammer goes back into the post and edits the post to something completely different and adds links that take you off Facebook. When you click the links, it asks for your personal information, so the scammers can steal it. Detroit Fox 2, advised, these posts come in various forms, like found pets that are injured, stolen items, and missing children. reported in 2022, Texas law enforcement has warned residents about scammers creating fake Facebook groups posing as local community groups. These scammers typically use the same photos and content across different cities when they create a new fake social media group. Detroit Fox 2 suggests the following tips on how to spot these fake posts: ➡ The posts are often published in online garage sale or buy/sell groups that anyone can join, and the original author of the post turns off the comments section. This is so other social media users cannot warn others the post is a scam. ➡ No specific law enforcement agency is listed, or no contact person is named if you locate the missing person, pet, criminal, etc. ➡ Verify the author's profile to ensure the original post's legitimacy. Look at: is their profile new? Do they have a lot of friends? Where does the profile say they live? ➡ These posts are typically vague. The post might include a city or county of where an event has occurred, but the post won’t say specifically. Check the local news, and law enforcement social media sites where the alleged incident occurred. If nothing is posted, it is likely a fake post. ➡ Google the names of the people in the post. We did this and discovered that Google retrieved a social media post from another state, containing identical wording and names of alleged criminals on a crime spree in Weld County. However, the photos of these individuals differed from those in the Weld County post. What you can do if you suspect a post is fake: ⭐ Don’t share it! ⭐ Report the post to the social media platform. ⭐ Report the post to the group administrator if it was shared in a community group. ⭐ Contact the Better Business Bureau and report the scam at, . #staysafeweldcounty #onlinesafetyawareness

What are the phone scammers up to in 2025? A phone scammer with a strong southern accent is calling and identifying himself as “Captain Wade” with the Weld County Sheriff’s Office. He is telling the victims they have warrants for missing jury duty and that a “gag order” has been placed on them. Then, he demands money to for the “fines” and asks that they withdraw money from their bank account. Once this is done, the victim is instructed to drive to another location, scan a QR code, and send the money to the scammer to pay their “fines.” Here is the best thing you can do in these situations: Hang up, and immediately contact the sheriff’s office to verify if the validity of the call. Reach out to us at (970) 350-9600 for non-emergencies or dial 9-1-1. Also remember these tips, and spread the word: • Law enforcement will not call and threaten you with an arrest if you do not pay a debt. • Don't always trust your caller identification. • Scammers targeting our community have been known to "spoof" the sheriff's office phone number to make their calls appear legitimate-they are not. • If you receive a call from someone impersonating an employee from the sheriff's office and they are pressuring you for your personal information, or to give them money don't feel pressured to make the decision! This is a fear tactic. • Another tactic is to pressure you with short timelines to make decisions, so you don't have time to think or get resources to assist you-don’t fall for it. • If a caller is asking you to make transactions that seem confusing or are not straight forward for payment-they are not legitimate, and the call is not from any law enforcement agency because we do not operate in this manner. Law enforcement will not call and ask you for your personal information such as your social security number, or for payment over the phone in ANY of the following ways: • Payment through gift cards • Payment through prepaid cards • Payment through money transfer applications like Cash App, Zell, Paypal, or Venmo • Payment through a wiring of funds via Western Union or any bank • Payment through a QR code or any kind of kiosk #staysafeweldcounty

National Human Trafficking Awareness Month During National Human Trafficking Awareness month, we want to educate you on what human trafficking is, what groups are at-risk in being victimized, and some human trafficking statistics specific to Colorado. Combat Human Trafficking defines human trafficking is a severe form of exploitation for labor (including sex) involving force, fraud, or coercion. • Exploitation: The action or fact of treating someone unfairly to benefit from their work. • Force: To make someone do something against their will. • Fraud: Wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain. • Coercion: The practice of persuading someone to do something by using force or threats. The Colorado Human Trafficking Council, identified the following groups that are the most at risk of human trafficking in Colorado: • Foreign nationals • Undocumented immigrants • People with disabilities • People with substance abuse addictions • Domestic violence and abuse survivors • Homeless and LGBTQ+ youth-It is important to note Colorado has a higher-than-average number of homeless people, including homeless youth. Here are some human trafficking statistics from the Human Trafficking Courts Blog about what has been reported in Colorado recently: • According to the National Human Trafficking Hotline, 137 cases were reported in 2021 in Colorado. It is important to note that these cases do not reflect the full reality, thanks to underreporting. • Between 2014 and 2019, survivor services served more labor trafficking survivors than sex trafficking survivors. • Recent data shows courts have tried more defendants on alleged sex trafficking than labor trafficking charges. However, this does not necessarily mean sex trafficking is more prevalent. If you or someone you know has a tip, or needs assistance please contact the: Colorado’s Human Trafficking Hotline: Call 866-455-5075 or text 720-999-9724. You can call the hotline 24/7. The text line is available from noon to midnight MT. All information is confidential. #NationalHumanTraffickingAwarenessMonth
