I'm going to try to share this sad story in a hopeful way. Last week my father was found deceased from an apparent suicide. I had not spoken to him in many years & was shocked to find my cat Harry from when I was a teenager still living in his house. He is at least 22 years old.
I felt the need to post something here for my own sanity and to explain the appearance of a new 'library cat' in future photos without having to tell this story again. Ive been spending time up in Massachusetts sorting out his house and unfinished business so haven't been on here
Thank you to everyone who commented with support the other day. I'd never have time to write back to everyone but I did read all the comments and appreciate each one. For everyone concerned for Harry's fate, he is safe living with us now and is recovering at his own pace, as am I

My father struggled with severe mental health and drug and alcohol abuse issues. After the things I witnessed and experienced as a child I chose to "cut him off" when my own children were born.
If you are struggling please get help, he refused his whole life and this is very sad.
Happy Birthday to American writer and poet, H.P. Lovecraft.
Born August 20, 1890.

This is Penny, my late father's dog. We found her living with Harry the cat while rummaging through my Dad's house for important documents last week.
She will be staying with us since she has been through a lot already and is happy here at our house with our other pets.
Thank you to everyone who commented with support the other day. I'd never have time to write back to everyone but I did read all the comments and appreciate each one. For everyone concerned for Harry's fate, he is safe living with us now and is recovering at his own pace, as am I

I'm not going to say what it is because it's bad luck but my all-time 'holy grail' book might be coming in the mail tomorrow.
Obviously it will be tomorrow's 'featured book' if it doesn't get held up in the mail.
Happy birthday to the illustrious American horror and psychological mystery writer, Shirley Jackson.
Born December 14, 1916
Jackson wrote six novels and over two-hundred short stories over her lengthy writing career.
It took a couple years and a lot of patience but I am happy to announce that I have finally collected the entirety of Manly Wade Wellman's "John the Balladeer" stories and novels in their first hardcover editions! 🎸
I don't usually talk about real life here but my 9-year-old daughter has been very ill with a still unidentified stomach issue. She went to the ER earlier this week & has a follow up for more testing today. Please send any vibes, prayers, incantations or whatever your thing is 😔

Born March 3, 1863.
What is your favorite Machen story?
I will share some of my Machen books here in the thread...
I'm not a writer but someone should write a Weird Horror story about the effects that handling and delivering numerous second-hand occult volumes to the home of an eccentric, reclusive, lovecraftian book collector has on the local postal workers.

What does everyone think of the "Book of the New Sun" series by Gene Wolfe?
I collected these a couple years ago but haven't read them yet and am thinking about starting them.
They have been recommended to me numerous times but it seems like people either love them or hate them.
On this day in 1918, the distinguished early Weird Fiction writer William Hope Hodgson was killed by the direct impact of an artillery shell while fighting in The Great War (WWI) at the Fourth Battle of Ypres.
Seventy-six years ago yesterday, legendary Weird Fiction writer Arthur Machen departed our plain of existence. (December 15, 1947)
He is one of my favorite writers to read and collect.

(This excerpt was spotted in the anthology "Future Lovecraft".)

Happy birthday to legendary pulp-era writer Manly Wade Wellman, born May 21, 1903! Wellman is best remembered today for his "John The Balladeer" series of Appalachian occult detective tales and in his own time was one of the most popular contributors to Weird Tales Magazine.
Old mass market paperbacks always have wonderful art & as much as I'd like to collect them too, it feels like an additional hobby that I can't afford so "as a collector" I generally target 1st hardcover editions. Here are some vintage Weird Fiction related MMPBs I couldn't resist
"The Color Out of Time" by Michael Shea, published by
@dawbooks
in 1984.
A meta-sequel to H.P. Lovecraft's story "The Colour Out of Space" is set around a New England reservoir, where strange modern happenings imply that Lovecraft's tale was indeed inspired by real events.

Happy Birthday to American actor, art historian, and gourmet cook, Vincent Price! Born May 27, 1911.
I usually only share the birthdays of classic Weird Fiction writers but Price starred in more films based on classic Weird Fiction than anyone else in history so he deserves it.☠️
This is supposedly on it's way across the Atlantic to my house (in a crate of Transylvanian soil).
It's a first edition so for the 1/6 of the going rate that I got it for, I will believe it when I see actually see it.

I've finally collected a nice set of the Arkham House H.P. Lovecraft corrected print editions from the 80s with matching cover art by Raymond Bayless.
These are hard to find correctly online these days as they share an ISBN with later 90/00s(?) printings with different jackets.
Ever since I put the Egyptian Cat Idol from the antique shop in the Library Room, Bob has chosen to sleep on the shelf beneath it over all the more comfortable furniture in the house.
It's genuinely pretty weird...
Everyone please send your good vibes, prayers, incantations or whatever your positive wishes are for Bob the Library Cat. He snuck out & appears to have been struck by a car last night. He should be okay but could use some positive energy today.

Clark Ashton Smith is one of my favorite writers of all time so I've decided to read/reread one of his short stories per day in chronological order until I finish all 6 volumes of his collected fiction. This will give me a chance to catch all the more obscure tales I've missed.📖

"The King in Yellow" by Robert W. Chambers, published by Buccaneer Books in 1976.
This edition is notable for including all ten of the stories which were printed in the original 1895 book. Most print editions available today only include the first four or five stories.

This just came in the mail today.
It's a very nice copy of the 1949 "Memorial Edition" of A. Merritt's weird fantasy novel "The Ship of Ishtar" which is fully illustrated by Virgil Finlay. I'll be sharing this one here sometime this week.
Happy birthday to Weird Fiction writer Frank Belknap Long, born on April 27, 1901.
Long was published often in Weird Tales and was one of H.P. Lovecraft's real-life closest friends.
Later in life, he enjoyed a successful mainstream writing career across a range of genres.
My small but growing Arthur Machen collection. Most of these are the Knopf US 1st editions. "The Great God Pan" is a modern reprint.
The bibliography from 1923 arrived today and I will share it here in more detail later this afternoon. 📚
