A Japanese military sword on display in a Chinese museum. It it is being touted as bloodstained, and having being used during the "Nanking Massacre" in November 1937....however the blade is dated August 1938!

The flag could be wrapped around the waist or tied to the end of a rifle.
China never had good luck flags, which explains why they lost the Sino-Japanese War.

I found an interesting old image of young Japanese women taking self defense lessons using various firearms, no doubt to protect themselves against marauding Chinese bandits.
