Optimization is something you can only do on a solid foundation. Too many unhealthy people look to cutting-edge influencers for some magic elixir. @farbood’s HIIT protocol will make a much larger difference than BJ’s erection monitors, air filters, blood boys, olive oils, so on so forth. You need basic health. Breathing, drinking enough water, eating healthy, regular exercise, sleeping well, a focus on love/compassion/relationships writ large, flexibility, to find equanimity in your daily life, good posture, musculature, stability, broadly useful medical exams, regular physicals. From that basic health foundation there is incredible improvement to be had also in fairly standard areas. You want to live forever but you can’t walk for 4 hours, sprint for a 1/2 mile, do a 100 push-ups and sit-ups in 2 minutes, do 5 pull-ups, or bench, curl, squat a reasonably healthy amount of weight, concentrate for more than 30 minutes, read for 4 hours, etc etc etc Every moment optimizing before being able to do the above is ineffective and a moment you aren’t hitting the basics. ALL of these things will dramatically improve your lifespan, health-span and happiness barring catastrophic health event or unforeseen accident. You want to live forever but you are unhealthy as fuck. Please consider. cc @BrianNorgard @naval @tferriss et al

@jposhaughnessy @sampleswill Same. When I was a kid I thought tattoos would diminish my ability to connect with reality. (I studied emag antenna theory and was bonkers for tantric yoga.)

@octonion Haha this sounds exactly like someone stalling for time in oral exams “Could you use that in a sentence please? Also, could that sentence be reeeeally long?”

The simulation hypothesis is a dumb idea but if it weren’t Weyl/Weil/Wiles would be considered proof
The French mathematician André Weil was imprisoned for failing to report for army duty in 1940. While in jail, he proved the Riemann hypothesis for curves over finite fields. He wrote the following in a letter to his wife:

@rorysutherland @GrumpyAgencyGuy I was in Scotland when it was being filmed. It may not be historically accurate but it’s a great movie. Curious why you disagree, or at least why it’s “bollocks” instead of “not my cup of tea”?

@DavidSHolz Pope gets woken in the middle of the night; “What is it???” “Well, your holiness, the good news is our lord and saviour Jesus Christ is returned.” “That’s wonderful, my son, but you look troubled.. what’s the bad news?” “He says to meet him in Salt Lake City.”

@p_millerd Curiosity abounds in the real world/actual humans in my near geographic circle. Intelligence and critical thinking is everywhere missing and it’s depressing as hell. Buncha morons.

@BasedBeffJezos Please do. I find it irritating beyond belief that Beff gets a million likes for taking a shit and Gill posts brilliant shit and it’s crickets.

@TinkeredThinker @dwarkesh_sp I don’t think any artist knows they’re work is truly great before they die. It just takes too long for that to be determined.

I have a hard time with translated Indian poetic meter, though surprisingly not in Sanskrit (Lotus Sutra.) Kind of sucks. Latin, Greek, Italian, old/Middle English, German all seem fine when translated, always providing their read aloud. Has always irritated me since I’ve tried and failed many times.

@IntuitMachine Intelligence does not follow logical progression and LLMs do. It’s in their fundamental nature, since that is how they work. Intelligence makes big leaps, LLMs take tiny steps.

AI cannot have intuition, purely because intuition *by definition* makes leaps over it’s nearest neighbors and AI by definition follows those curves. It can however generate wild stuff in neighborhoods that are illogical but spur humans to be inspired by what makes those leaps illogical it can never be intelligent, unless intelligence is merely memorization and filling in blanks. Which it isn’t. The only people who seem to think AI is truly capable of original creative art are… not creative. Funny how that works 🤣
