The illegal pet trade is a multi-million-dollar industry that is fuelled by corruption, driving several species toward extinction. Every year, thousands of rare and endangered animals—including orangutans, turtles, tigers, and gibbons—are trafficked by criminal networks that exploit them for profit. Since 2016, the Wildlife Justice Commission has been investigating this trade, working tirelessly to dismantle and disrupt the networks behind it. Our intelligence-led operations have resulted in the rescue of over 12,000 live animals, including orangutans, lemurs, turtles, tigers, gibbons, and monkeys. By exposing the criminals behind this trade, we help protect some of the world’s most vulnerable species. Join us in our mission to dismantle the transnational criminal networks driving this illegal trade to protect these vulnerable species. #WildlifeJustice #IllegalPetTrade #WildlifeCrime

🚨Another Victim Rescued from the Illegal Wildlife Trade Last month in #Thailand, a baby orangutan was rescued as part of a joint operation with Thailand’s Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division and the US Fish and Wildlife Service—supported by the Wildlife Justice Commission. This is yet another stark reminder of the brutal reality of the illegal wildlife pet trade. The illegal pet trade is a multimillion-dollar criminal industry, driving species to the brink of extinction. Orangutans are among its tragic victims. 🐵Orangutans are not pets. Every stolen baby represents a heartbreaking loss. Mother orangutans, who fiercely protect their babies, are often killed—sometimes even sold as bushmeat—while their infants are trafficked as exotic pets used for entertainment. At the WJC, we are committed to dismantling these criminal networks. The rescue of this orangutan is a small but crucial victory in the fight to protect these species from extinction. But we can’t do it alone. 🔗Join our mission and support our work: Together, we can stop wildlife crime driving species to extinction. #EndWildlifeTrafficking #WildlifeCrime

🚨 Disrupting the illegal pet trade in Thailand! On 22 January 2025, a joint operation led by Thailand’s Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Suppression Division (NED) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), with support from the Wildlife Justice Commission resulted in a significant seizure of critically endangered animals and the arrests of multiple suspects connected to international #wildlifetrafficking networks. The seized animals included species protected under CITES Appendix I, which strictly prohibits their trade: 🔹 3 Sumatran Orangutans 🔹 2 Siamangs 🔹 1 White-handed Gibbon 🔹 1 Deer 🔹 2 Red Pandas 🔹 7 Cotton-top Tamarins 🔹 1 Red-whiskered Bulbul 🔹 1 Small Indian Mongoose This operation dealt a significant blow to organised wildlife crime networks, with the seized animals valued at over USD 217,000 on the black market. This success highlights the importance of international cooperation in the fight against the illegal pet trade, proving that it takes a network to defeat a network! #EndWildlifeCrime #WildlifeJustice

On Sunday we marked #InternationalCustomsDay and we want to spotlight the incredible work of customs authorities worldwide in the fight against #wildlifecrime. Through our partnership with the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), we’ve achieved remarkable results, including major arrests and record seizures and severely disrupted the trafficking of african pangolins from Nigeria. Notably, no significant seizures of African pangolin scales have been reported at any seaports globally since January 2022, signaling a major disruption in transnational trafficking routes. Thank you to Customs authorities worldwide for making a difference for wildlife! For more information on our partnership with NCS: #WildlifeCrime #EndWildlifeCrime #PartnershipsMatter

Thank you @GI_TOC , France and the @europeanunion for hosting yesterdays insightful discussions during the second Security-Development Dialogue on Multilateral Action Against Environmental Crimes. During the dialogue, the Wildlife Justice Commission highlighted two main advances it would like to see in multilateral forums in 2025 based on observations from it’s on the ground operations: 📌 The urgent need to systematically use law enforcement tools, such as intelligence analysis, special investigative techniques and financial investigations, to effectively tackle environmental crime. 📌 The importance of addressing siloes, including addressing the corruption enabling these crimes. ( This dialogue provided a crucial platform to analyse the dynamics of multilateral negotiations on crimes that affect the environment —examining the factors contributing to disagreements, obstacles, and deadlocks in global discussions, as well as opportunities. As we prepare for major global meetings in 2025 and 2026, including at the 11th Conference of the State Parties to the UN Convention Against Corruption in December this year, we must ensure that environmental crime is prioritised on the agenda. Strong political commitments including effective measures to prevent and address such crimes on the ground, and promoting a holistic approach through coordination between UN forums like UN Convention Against Transnational Organised Crime, UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and others, will be key to driving meaningful progress. For more on how we can address the challenges and weaknesses in current responses, read GI-TOC’s report from the first dialogue session : #EnvironmentalCrime #WildlifeCrime #Corruption #LawEnforcement #WildlifeTrafficking #UNCAC #UNTOC #ECO-SOLVE
