A lot of thoughtful responses. The emerging consensus seems to be that 100 watts from the transmitter is safe, but for extra peace of mind I could go with 70 watts and lose maybe a third of an S-unit or so off my received signal. That’ll also help me manage energy consumption.
Remember, there are no stupid questions, just stupid people who ask them. I want to operate on 60 meters this weekend. The regs say I need an ERP of 100 watts relative to a half-wave dipole. How much gain does an end fed random wire have? I can't find the answer anywhere.

@nprscottsimon At least we didn’t get the cliché about the need to get touchdowns in the red zone because, well, they never got in the red zone.
