Good to be back in Brussels today, addressing the European Parliament. European countries and institutions have an opportunity, and a historic duty, to act at home – and to advance human rights globally. With resources and public support, Europe can drive meaningful action.

80 years ago, 7000 prisoners were liberated from Auschwitz-Birkenau. On Holocaust Remembrance Day, we honour victims & survivors. As antisemitism, hate speech & dehumanisation increase, we must defend human rights & ensure the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten.

I have just completed a deeply moving & important visit to Syria - never before has there been a United Nations Human Rights High Commissioner there. I am impressed by the bravery, fortitude & resilience of the people, given the atrocities & repression they endured over the years

The remnants of neighbourhoods, like Jobar, completely destroyed by bombardment, leave little to the imagination. They stand as haunting reminders of what I can only describe as the apocalyptic destruction that rendered them unrecognisable.

My Office will support transitional justice initiatives, accountability for atrocity crimes, access to essential services, and truth-telling processes to rebuild trust for a better future for all of the people of Syria.
