A monster thread for a monster work on videogames and agency.   @EdgarDubourg combined theoretical models of goal-directed action, dimensionality reduction techniques, and methods for automatically annotating cultural products to explain the variety of gaming preferences 1/5

From Tetris to Zelda, to Elden Ring and League of Legends, our new preprint with @ValerianChambon delves into the diversity of video games and gamers' preferences 🎮. We present a cognitive framework for understanding this diversity. Paper and more at the end of this thread ⬇️

Bonus track: we plan to develop a video game based on the principles of the DEEP model and the results of our study. Here's the first image! 5/5

In short, we have developed a model (DEEP) to characterise the diversity of gaming preferences, based on the assumption that this diversity reflects differences in the way agents use and navigate goal hierarchies (and exercise their agency along the way). 2/5

@philipcball @HankGreelyLSJU (or as Ariane, my co-author, would say, “Scientific facts alone are not enough. Any change brought about by science in a normative field must be integrated by mentalities to be effective")

@philipcball @HankGreelyLSJU In this sense, responsibility is impervious to any truth about determinism. Or, to put it another way (sorry for the self-citation!): "As long as the illusion of free will remains intact, even if it is an illusion, we can claim to be responsible."

@JAMAPsych @Cesp_Inserm @APHP Interestingly, the association we observe between BPD and underinvestment in somatic maintenance strategies echoes this fascinating work by @yetianmed and colleagues, also just published in JAMA:

Mental illness is a brain disorder? Right? We thought so. Hang on though, our new study @JAMAPsych shows that poor body health is a more pronounced manifestation of mental illness than poor brain health. 🧵1/9
