Good thing that we no longer charge late fees!
This book was recently returned to VPL over 45 years past its due date. Just your friendly reminder that it is never too late!
The time has come to ASK ME ANYTHING. Reminder that I’m
@HarrisonMooney
, the author of Invisible Boy and current writer in residence, so when I say something unusually partisan, like “libraries are a public good, not a frickin Cactus Club,” I am only speaking for me
We miss you! While you are out on your essential grocery/pharmacy run or on a walk for exercise at a safe distance from others, you'll notice we left you messages in some of our branch windows.
UPDATE: We have suspended late fees and extended due dates. No fees for holds not picked up. All events over 250 are being cancelled or postponed. Branches are open for regular hours.
Of all the wonderful amenities offered by public libraries, one of the best is that you can come and simply exist here without any pressure to spend money.
Come check out the rooftop garden. Pull up a seat and relish in meaningful conversations with great company.

We are sad to hear of pioneering landscape architect Cornelia Oberlander's passing. She leaves our Central Library rooftop garden as part of her legacy, and will forever have a special place in our hearts. We will miss her impromptu visits to check up on her work.
Happy birthday to our Central Library! 🥳 It opened 25 years ago today.

It's never too late to return your overdue library books.
One was returned to our Mount Pleasant Branch 47 years late with a funny note blaming the book.
Another stack was brought back to our Kitsilano Branch 56 years late after being found in a friend's parent's estate.
Honey, we’re obsessed with the fantasy inducing holiday lights decorating the rooftop garden of our Central Library. Heartbreakers will want to take a photo up here. Even through the rain you’ll get your hero shot when you believe... Happy

REMEMBERING: Alice Munro, the first Canadian woman to win a Nobel Prize for Literature. She worked at VPL’s Kitsilano branch in the ‘50s. One of the world’s most skilled short story writers, her Literary Landmark can be found outside the branch today.

Yesterday we took to Facebook and Instagram to share a book from our collection that was recently returned to us ✨slightly✨overdue and asked for guesses as to when it was last checked out.
There were many great guesses, but the correct year is...

1937!
Joe Fortes was the city's first paid official lifeguard. He first began by volunteering his time watching over the children at English Bay. Thank you Joe Fortes! 💦☀️

Joe Fortes arrived in Vancouver before there was a Vancouver (1885). He taught thousands to swim & saved numerous lives. In 1897 he became an official lifeguard.
He passed Feb 4, 1922 & the city arranged the largest public funeral held to that point.
