“The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Lance Corporal William Kyle Carpenter, United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as an Automatic Rifleman with Company F, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, Regimental Combat Team 1, FIRST Marine Division (Forward), I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward), in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM on 21 November 2010. - Lance Corporal Carpenter was a member of a platoon-sized coalition force, comprised of two reinforced Marine rifle squads partnered with an Afghan National Army squad. The platoon had established Patrol Base DAKOTA two days earlier in a small village in the Marjah District in order to disrupt enemy activity and provide security for the local Afghan population. - Lance Corporal Carpenter and a fellow Marine were manning a rooftop security position on the perimeter of Patrol Base DAKOTA when the enemy initiated a daylight attack with hand grenades, one of which landed inside their sandbagged position. - Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own safety, Lance Corporal Carpenter moved toward the grenade in an attempt to shield his fellow Marine from the deadly blast. When the grenade detonated, his body absorbed the brunt of the blast, severely wounding him, but saving the life of his fellow Marine. - By his undaunted courage, bold fighting spirit, and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of almost certain death, Lance Corporal Carpenter reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.” - Happy 2/9 Day

Before we had the AC-130 we had the AC-47 also known as "Spooky Goon" or "Puff, the Magic Dragon". It had three gatling guns and a crew with balls the size of Texas. Just going on a close air support aircraft journey. Carry on.🤘😎

On this 2/8 Day we remember Cpl Jonathan Yale: - “The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy Cross (Posthumously) to Corporal Jonathan Tyler Yale, United States Marine Corps, for extraordinary heroism while serving as an Anti-Tank Missileman, Mobile Assault Platoon 4, Weapons Company, Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM on 22 April 2008. - While Corporal Yale and a fellow Marine manned a sentry post at the Entry Control Point (ECP) for Joint Security Station Nasser in Ramadi, Iraq, a tank truck suddenly began to rapidly negotiate the serpentine concrete obstacles leading to the ECP. - Corporal Yale and his fellow Marine quickly recognized the threat of a suicide bomber driving a truck capable of carrying a large quantity of explosives and posing a major threat to the more than 50 Marines and Iraqi policemen in the Joint Security Station. - Corporal Yale immediately engaged the truck with precise fire from his M249 Squad Automatic Weapon, while his fellow Marine opened fire with his M4 rifle. Ignoring the grave personal risk, Corporal Yale and his fellow Marine continued their accurate fires, stopping the truck a few feet from their positions. - At that instant the suicide bomber detonated approximately 2,000 pounds of explosives contained in the truck, leveling the ECP and mortally wounding Corporal Yale. - The courageous actions of Corporal Yale in resolutely defending his post against an imminent threat undoubtedly helped save the lives of more than 50 Marines and Iraqi policemen at Joint Security Station Nasser that day. - By his outstanding display of decisive leadership, courageous actions and total devotion to duty, Corporal Yale reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.” - His fellow Marine was LCpl Jordan Haerter (3rd photo), a Rifleman in 3d Plt, Weapons Company, 1/9. Their units were in the process of a turn over. These Marines probably never met prior to this day, but they were brothers and they died together protecting their brothers. Haerter also received the Navy Cross. Rest Easy Marines.

Happy 2/8 Day - “I was Fox Co. we assaulted the military hospital in An Nasiriyah. There were torture rooms in the basement and her’s (Jessica Lynch) and another soldier’s flak were down there.
