@ZachWritesStuff @LeoBeletsky Its because we we are looking for the keys under the lamp-post because that’s where the light is (prescribe opioids), not where the more difficult but real problems are (prevention of SUD)

Car Crash #Deaths Involving #Cannabis Double (to 22%). And those deaths are more likely to involve #alcohol too.

@TsengJennifer Lost since the early days of (work) email: it is asynchronous (unlike DM). I read and send when I’m working. You (generic) read and send when you are working. (I especially like it when you don’t answer right away; because then I need to do more work when I thought I was done)

@myrkanna @Peter_Grinspoon It sounds strange but often “crude” is used as a technical term to mean a statistical analysis unadjusted for other variables. As for the study, hot flashes could lead people to use cannabis, or cannabis could lead to hot flashes

@Peter_Grinspoon Um…no it isn’t evidence. we don’t determine efficacy by asking around to see what is frequently used. we get evidence from placebo controlled trials. If cannabis is very effective for this indication (specifying dose, frequency, cannabinoid) then a trial will easily show it.

@DrSarahWakeman @maiasz @krigg01 Basically, dependence should be used to indicate physical dependence. Not a diagnosis of addiction/substance use disorder. People—this is not hard. And ICD people - time for a change (how about “disorder”?) @WHO #icd11

@DrSarahWakeman @NYUGSOMHospMed @TheIHI @maiasz @Johnkellymgh Yes. There is no such diagnosis as “substance abuse disorder”. DSM=substance use disorder

@Peter_Grinspoon could be-as there are in studies of cannabis benefits Though usually for studies of harms we worry even with less evidence Especially around pregnancy My reply focused on your critique that disorder might really represent use, and the implications of that for study interpretation

PS social determinants and health behaviors are what one finds upstream (point made by Gourevitch). Don’t forget about disease but do give attention to SDH and behaviors
