“It’s a second division. It’s not even close.”

in this mini edition of the USL Tactics show, I provide no commentary, clip three examples of fucking horrid set piece defense, and score it to Sarah McLachlan
San Diego was a top-notch club on the field, but their support of their players in the face of abuse in 2020 says it all.
It’s not about profit or points on the table, it’s about community. No one understood that better than the amazing people with the San Diego Loyal.
Quick headline after Don Garber teased potential expansion beyond a 30th team, which is expected to be announced this year.
- Why Las Vegas and San Diego stand out
- Why
#MLS
keeps growing so rapidly
- Which markets could join as No. 31 and 32?
So with a handful of announced expansion teams thrown in, the USL looks like this.
Things are changing, and movement is bound to happen. There's a very, very clear route to US Soccer-compliant tiers in the first, second, and third divisions.
Hey y’all, here’s my nearly-70-page guide to the basic system of every team in the USL! I also provide introductory commentary on league-tactical trends and a glossary of relevant lingo. Check it out, share it, and do what you will.
This is music to the ears of the entire USL.
Oakland poached Murray from the San Jose system this offseason with the intent to give him flexibility to move on. He’s played a whopping two minutes in the league this year, but his USYNT pedigree is going to get the Roots a fee.
German magazine kicker reports that
#Bundesliga
side SC Freiburg have secured Oakland Roots SC center-back Drew Murray.
The 17-year-old
#USMNT
prospect is set to leave the USL Championship side in December. Murray will initially join Freiburg's second team.
International recording artist Pitbull is purchasing the naming rights to FIU’s football stadium. He’s expected to pay the school $1.2 million per year for the next five years to change the name of FIU Stadium to Pitbull Stadium, per FIU board documents.
I love the USL, but I miss a league that:
- fired coaches at airports
- gave franchises in the Caribbean to Carmelo Anthony
- had teams sell their turf
- had champions exist for one season before folding
- sued US Soccer for some bullshit
Bill Peterson, never forgotten
First update to the USL Championship Empires for 2023!
San Diego and Monterey are the big territorial gainers out of the gates.
For reference, everyone starts with the counties closest to their stadium. Beat a team, take their land.
I think it’s great that US Soccer is growing the game and promoting their premier tournament by…

…refusing to subsidize streaming for any teams?
When Jake Edwards took over, the USL had 16 independent teams and wasn’t even the second division.
Now, the USL has two pro tiers with 36 total clubs. A CBA exists to support the players. You regularly see prospects sold worldwide for nearly seven figures.
What a legacy.
Introducing: USL 50!
Who are the 50 best players in the USL? I break it down in order, analyzing what makes each player so special to their team and to the league.
Come see who made it from your club and who ranks as the best of the best!
NEW:
@DetroitCityFC
is in the middle of the most successful USL expansion campaign in at least five years. Why have they been so strong out of the gates, and how have they set themselves up for the future? I explain here.
Soft confirmation that Jacksonville won't be ready for '25 and Omaha's rise to USL-C is at least another year off.
This also implies that the league may not lose a club for the first time in forever.
NEW: The USL is now a major source of young talent for teams across the globe, but who’s next up? I spotlight a starting XI of youth prospects and unsung contributors that you’ll be watching for years to come.
Check out The USL Watchlist for 2023.
To be sentimental for a sec: I was camped out in my living room in Indy in 2014, forcing my family to watch the Eleven play their first ever game on MyINDY. To see how the club and this sport have grown a decade later - and to be able to cover it - is insanely cool.
Sources: USL's Phoenix Rising is finalizing a deal to sign Clemson CB Pape Mar Boye.
Pape Mar Boye, 19, was offered GA deal before MLS SuperDraft & would have been in mix for top pick. Won NCAA title.
Big move for Phoenix. Pape Mar had interest abroad too. PHX made strong offer
Super deserving market, and Peter Marlette’s involvement is as positive a sign as can be. Between Rhode Island, Hartford, Brooklyn, and now Buffalo, the commitment to the Northeast is becoming really impressive.
NEW: Perception is everything, and being seen as a "minor league" puts the USL at a deficit in the war for attention.
How can the USL overcome the challenges? I looked at changes in Las Vegas, the Super League's sanctioning, and media trends to find out.
