NPP, stop the blame game. Governance is not about pointing fingers; it's about pointing the way forward. The UNP has taken note of the recent statement from the Ministry of Power and Energy regarding the power outage that left millions of Sri Lankans in serious trouble. It is with deep concern that we address this matter, not just as a political entity but as fellow citizens with a stake in our nation's well-being. We understand from the ministry's statement that an unusual incident at a substation was the immediate cause of the outage. However, the UNP wishes to focus on the systemic issues this incident has brought to light: Infrastructure Resilience: While the cause was indeed unusual, the scale of disruption indicates vulnerabilities in our energy infrastructure that require immediate attention. Preparedness and Response: This event tests not only our infrastructure but also our readiness to manage and mitigate such disruptions. We call upon the current administration under the NPP to: End the Blame Game: The NPP must move beyond attributing current crises to past governance. The electorate has mandated you to govern, and that governance should reflect leadership, not litigation of past wrongs. Take Responsibility: Now is the time for the NPP to step up, acknowledge the complexities of managing national infrastructure, and take decisive actions towards rectifying and preventing such issues. Immediate Solutions: We urge the implementation of immediate solutions: Strengthening our power grid against all forms of disruptions. Regular and thorough maintenance checks. Developing robust emergency protocols to manage and minimize the impact of outages. Invest in the Future: The UNP advocates for a substantial investment in modernizing our power infrastructure. We should aim for: Greater integration of renewable energy sources to reduce dependency on vulnerable systems. Upgrading our grid to be more resilient against both natural and man-made disruptions. Transparent Governance: Transparency in communication with the public about such incidents is non-negotiable. The NPP should ensure: Regular updates on the progress of recovery and prevention strategies. Openness about the challenges and how they are being met, fostering public trust. Unity Over Division: The UNP extends its hand for cooperation beyond political lines. We propose a collaborative framework where all parties can contribute to crafting a more secure, efficient, and sustainable energy future for Sri Lanka. This power outage, while unfortunate, provides a clear mandate for change, governance is not about pointing fingers; it's about pointing the way forward. The people of Sri Lanka deserve no less.

As we face yet another significant power disruption today, the UNP expresses its deep concern for the inconvenience and hardship this has caused to the citizens of Sri Lanka. The current power outage, which has left many without electricity, underscores the urgency for immediate action and long-term solutions in our energy sector. We understand the frustration and the impact this has on daily life, businesses, and the overall economy of our nation, and call upon the NPP government to take swift measures to rectify this matter.

On Sri Lanka's 77th independence day, it is sad to note that Sri Lanka's present government keeps talking about plans as opposed to taking real action. The UNP requests President @anuradisanayake to start governing. Since President's victory, the President and Government have only acted as an opposition party, and have failed the people. The UNP's message to the NPP is to stop the cheap political rhetoric and to deliver action. Sri Lankans are not fools and if the NPP can't govern, then step aside.

Let Us Unite for National Revival! Today, on the 77th National Independence Day, we celebrate not just freedom but a new path for Sri Lanka. With a government built by the collective will of the people, we are committed to rebuilding a thriving nationโ€”one that is modern, ethical, and inclusive. Over the past four months, we have laid the foundation for a stable economy, a new political culture, and governance based on equality, the rule of law, and public engagement. We strive to eliminate rural poverty, embrace technology, and restore Sri Lankaโ€™s global image. Despite challenges, we move forward with confidence. I call on all Sri Lankans to unite in shaping a new era of national revival.

The NPP government must start delivering action At a recent speech in Jaffna, President @anuradisanayake accused opposition groups for attempting to unite to form a broad opposition coalition. The president claimed that this was an attempt to prevent action being taken against corruption allegations made by the NPP whilst in the opposition. The UNP wishes to remind the NPP administration that it is no longer in the opposition, and it must now deliver action. Take action on the baseless corruption allegations made, stop the cheap political rhetoric. The people of Sri Lanka can't be fooled always.

Safeguarding Our Democracy: A Call for National Unity Dear Sri Lankans, At this crossroad in our nation's journey, the UNP stands steadfast in our commitment to the protection and promotion of democracy, freedom, and the pluralistic values that define our society. We are witnessing an alarming shift under the current NPP government, where the principles of democracy are being overshadowed by what appears to be an embrace of communist doctrines. The UNP recognizes the genuine desire for change among our people, particularly in the wake of economic challenges and governance issues. However, the path towards communism, which often leads to centralized control, suppression of dissent, and economic rigidity, is not the answer to our nation's aspirations for progress, justice, and freedom. Our Call to Action: A Unified Front Against Authoritarianism: We appeal to all political leaders, regardless of party allegiance, to set aside differences in the face of this common threat. The integrity of our democratic system is at stake, and it requires a collective effort to ensure it remains vibrant and inclusive. An Urgent Need for a Common Opposition: The time has come for a strategic alliance of democratic forces. We must work hand in hand to form a robust opposition that can effectively challenge the ideological shift towards communism. This coalition should stand for democratic governance, economic freedom, and the rule of law. Engagement of the Sri Lankan Diaspora: We reach out to our brothers and sisters across the globe, urging them to join this cause. Your voice, your advocacy, and your support are invaluable in preserving the democratic ethos of our homeland. Educating and Mobilizing Our Citizens: We encourage every Sri Lankan to become an active participant in our democracy. Understand the stakes, discuss the implications, and engage in the political process. Our democracy thrives on an informed electorate that can hold its leaders accountable. Promoting Economic Liberty and Social Justice: Addressing economic disparities and promoting social justice must be done through systems that encourage innovation, competition, and personal freedoms, not through state-controlled mechanisms that have historically led to economic stagnation and social division. Preservation of Cultural Diversity: Our country's strength lies in its diversity. We must pledge to protect this diversity, ensuring that our political, educational, and cultural policies reflect and honor the rich tapestry of our society. This is not a call against any political party but a plea for the preservation of our democratic fabric. We invite all Sri Lankans to join us in this noble endeavor to safeguard our nation's future. Let us unite in our love for Sri Lanka, our commitment to democracy, and our resolve to build a future where every citizen can thrive in freedom and dignity. Together, let us prove that our democracy is not just an ideal but a living, breathing reality that we will defend with unity, dialogue, and action.

The NPP is systematically converting Sri Lanka into a communist state The UNP expresses grave concern regarding the current trajectory of the NPP government, which we believe is methodically steering Sri Lanka towards a communist state. Under the guise of 'system change,' the NPP, primarily driven by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna, has been implementing policies and reforms that echo the principles of communism, straying from the democratic values that Sri Lanka has upheld since its independence. Here are the key points of our accusation: Centralized Control and Economic Policies: The NPP's economic agenda appears to favour state control over key industries and resources, which is a hallmark of communist governance. The government is not only reducing private enterprise but also centralizing economic power in the hands of the state. This move is likely to stifle innovation, reduce competition, and lead to inefficiencies, which historically have resulted in economic stagnation in communist regimes. Suppression of Political Pluralism: There are signs of the NPP leveraging its supermajority in parliament to diminish the influence of opposition voices. The UNP fears that under the banner of 'discipline' and 'order', the government might enact policies that could limit political freedoms, thereby eroding the democratic space for dissent and pluralism. The NPP's history with democratic centralism suggests a governance model where decisions are made by a select few, potentially marginalizing the broader electorate's voice. Risks to Democracy: Erosion of Individual Freedoms: The shift towards communism could lead to a reduction in personal liberties, including freedom of speech, press, and assembly, which are essential for a democratic society. Judicial Independence: There is a risk that the judiciary will become less independent as state control expands, undermining the checks and balances crucial for democratic governance. International Relations: Adopting a more isolationist or ideologically aligned foreign policy could strain relations with democratic countries, impacting Sri Lanka's international standing and economic partnerships. Economic Isolation: Moving away from a market economy could deter foreign investment, leading to economic isolation and dependency on ideologically aligned nations, which might come with their own strings attached. Cultural and Social Impact: There's a concern over the potential for cultural homogenization and suppression of minority rights under a communist regime, which could reignite ethnic tensions or lead to new forms of social control. The UNP calls upon all Sri Lankans to be vigilant and protect the democratic ethos of our nation. We urge the NPP to reconsider these paths and engage in transparent governance that respects the democratic will of the people. The UNP stands committed to upholding democracy, encouraging economic freedom, and ensuring that Sri Lanka remains a vibrant, pluralistic society where every citizen's rights are protected and respected. We must not let Sri Lanka's democratic history be rewritten into a narrative of authoritarian control under the pretext of ideological purity. The future of our nation depends on our collective action to preserve our democratic institutions and freedoms.

The NPP government has to make its stance clear on Adani's 484 MW wind power project. The UNP expresses serious concern over the contradictory narratives surrounding the 484 MW wind power project in Mannar and Pooneryn, which was awarded to the Adani Group. The NPP government has proclaimed the cancellation of this project, yet Adani Group firmly disputes this, asserting that the power purchase agreement remains intact. This discordance not only breeds confusion but also undermines public trust and the integrity of our governmental processes. The UNP insists on the following actions to restore transparency and accountability: Immediate Clarification: The NPP government must immediately clarify the exact status of the project. If cancellation has occurred, where is the official documentation, and what was the rationale behind this significant decision? Transparency for the People: The citizens of Sri Lanka deserve to know the truth. We call on the government to disclose all pertinent documents and decisions related to this project to the public. Transparency is not just a policy; it is a democratic right. Impact Analysis: We demand a detailed report on the implications of this decision for Sri Lanka's energy security, economic health, and environmental sustainability. How does this align with our national goals for renewable energy and international climate commitments? Adherence to Legal Standards: If the project has been cancelled, the government must explain how this was done in compliance with legal and contractual obligations. What are the financial and legal ramifications, and how are we safeguarding our interests? Future Investment Climate: This situation could affect our country's attractiveness to future investors. The government must explain how they plan to restore confidence in Sri Lanka's investment environment, ensuring that such decisions do not deter sustainable and beneficial foreign investment. The UNP stands firm in its commitment to the principles of transparency, accountability, and national interest. We will continue to monitor this situation, advocate for the citizens' right to know, and work towards ensuring that Sri Lanka's path to development is not marred by opaque decision-making. We urge the NPP government to act decisively and openly to clarify this matter, for the benefit of our nation and its future.
