Just read that Eliezer Ben Yehuda—the founder of modern Hebrew—was born to a Chabad Chassidic family. Both his wives (sisters Devora and Hemda), also grew up in a Chabad family. Added to the list of rather unexpected Jewish figures who grew up in Chabad.

Mendel was joined today by his brand-new sister, Chaya Mushka. In island etiquette, there’s a whole new level of respect for those born on Martha’s Vineyard. People who were born off island are teasingly referred to as “wash-ashores.” Chaya will get the respect she deserves!

Everyone knows of Chabad as an outreach organization. Fewer know that Chabad is first and foremost a philosophy. Its name actually means “wisdom, understanding, and knowledge.” The movement and outreach is but an expression of the philosophy. A brief 🧵

The real story here isn’t the fast thinking… it’s the fact that while me and you are sitting on our couches tweeting, there are ppl out there, in incredibly distant towns, visiting lone Jews in jail late at night. Not for a cent. Nor for honor. That’s the story.

I just visited someone at a prison. Was only able to speak to him on the phone behind a thick glass window. I brought a Siddur, but the officer said they can’t accept hard cover books… So I ripped off the cover and handed it to the officer. He took it from me mouth open wide.

But it’s unfortunate. Because Chabad’s Chassidus is as enjoyable as it is lofty. And for Moshiach to come, the wellsprings of chassidus themselves must be spread. The expression won’t suffice. So I hope to attempt some easy-read threads on various topics of Chabad Chassidus.

R Moshe Kotlarsky asks a bracha for a couple he’s marrying off on the Rebbe’s anniversary. The Rebbe: I think his grandfather was at my wedding & gifted me a sefer. It’s in my office next to the midrash. Hold it with you as you marry them off. It’s hashgacha pratit 55 yrs later!

The famed poet, Ahad Ha’am, was born Asher Ginsburg into a Chassidic—but non-Chabad—family. While Ahad Ha’am himself didn’t have Chabad ancestry, his wife was a great granddaughter of the Tzemach Tzedek and a niece of the Rebbe Rashab. h/t @Mottel @ezalmanov

While he didn’t grow up in a Chabad family, Semyon Dimanstein studied in Lubavitch. The yeshiva’s director was the Frierdiker Rebbe RYY. In a horrible twist, Semyon became the director of the the Soviet communist party Yevsektsiya, whose primary target was the Frierdiker Rebbe…

So much is said about chabad but is there another organization in the world (let alone Jewish world), that has so many women in leadership positions?

@DBashIdeas Here’s the complete circle: When he tended to the Rebbetzin, she noted that he was a learned individual and mentioned this impression to the Rebbe. When he was next in 770, the Rebbe told him, “she told me you know how to learn.” Perhaps hinting to the earlier conversation.

The Rebbe discouraged an attempt by Ronald Lauder and R Chaskel Besser to import a new Jewish community to Poland. But he never "demanded that no Chabadnik set foot there." @Jerusalem_Post 's article is nice and well-meaning but the conclusion is disrespectful and ignorant.

Interesting conversation with the Rebbe and Chaim Potok about his new novel "The Chosen," shortly after its publication in 1967.

A young girl writes a coded message to the Rebbe: אקישט כקאט רטהכגה כה אמטל תע סכ עט רכת מבוק כה יי׳ The Rebbe deciphers the code as a wish for him to have children. In his response, the Rebbe acknowledges her brachah using the same code: שהגד סכ דאקיד—Thanks for the brachah!

Israeli Poet, Avraham Shlonsky, attended the same Cheder as the Rebbe in Yekatrinoslav (Dnieper), where they were childhood friends. Shlonsky, was named after his great grandfather, the Chossid R Avraham David Lavut, which made him second cousins once removed with the Rebbe.

Some folks will tell you that Chabad Chassidus is too lofty. “Sfas Emes, Noam Elimelech, and Likkutei Moharan are more practical,” they say. But that’s because Chabad’s philosophy is coding. It seeks a paradigm shift; not merely inspiration. It seeks a lifetime of commitment

We’re at a point that “Chabad” doesn’t need qualifiers. Certainly not one that (albeit subtly) attempts to minimize its relevance, and definitely not when it opens 5 new orgs for every 1 shut down or merged by legacy establishment!
