Caulfield Racecourse Heritage Summary
We have been closely following the heritage aspects of the Caulfield Racecourse Master Plan over the last few years.
Here is our complete summary of what was there before, what happened, what was lost, and where we ended up

Couldn't work out why CELEBRITY QUEEN had her head so low.
This amazing photo from
@paomaphotos
tells the story - Pike sliding up the neck to earn a dead heat. Thats some commitment!
How good is PRINCE OF ARRAN?
6 starts in Australia
- 2 x Herbert Power 2nds
- 1 x Hotham win
- 1 x Geelong Cup win
- 2nd and 3rd in a Melbourne Cup
Can we keep him please

Full race card for Cox Plate 1992
Thankfully, we have progressed so much since then - meaning that punters and racing fans never have to suffer through experiencing so much quality racing and so many champion horses on the one day.
Selling Racecourses Australia
Year 2006: plans to sell Cheltenham racecourse were
“bold decision in best interests of SA racing”
“provide foundation of new era for racing”
with plans to
“concentrate Adelaide racing on the other two venues Morphettville and Victoria Park"
/1
"Look it's all great to be winning at Royal Ascot, but have you guys ever thought about putting a basketball court on the lawns to really promote racing?"
ASFOORA
Sandown grandstand filled to capacity for motor racing. Yet if you listen to racing administrators no-one wants to go there ...
Maybe putting on quality events would assist? 🤔
Racing media is always so bland and unwilling to probe or ask difficult questions to keep decision makers accountable and open up debate on important issues.
We need more Matt Stewarts, not less. His work was outstanding and one of the few racing journos with any credibility.
Goal kicking routine
- remove any additional cameramen.
- remove any additional security guards
- remove any remaining camera equipment
- remove all plastic chairs
Nail goal from boundary line after siren.
Well rehearsed training drill

New bar that was part of the six million dollar refurbishment to attract punters back to Sandown, on the two Saturdays a year they actually race there.
Next step is to co-ordinate having it actually open on the same day the races are on.🤷♂️
Scathing criticism of MRC Master Plan on industry racing media.
"haven't heard one person say it's any good at all"
"can't understand how we can get this so wrong"
"more interested in property development than racing"
Terry Bailey 🏅
MRC election results with the three candidates who ran on:
- retain Sandown
- no new grandstand
- move mounting yard
Finishing 1st, 2nd and 4th and the top two winners clearly romping it in by a Pride of Jenni margin.
Clear mandate here for these sensible changes.
Three serious falls in Melbourne in last three weeks and jockey last night suspended for mid-range carelessness "but that doesn't matter he got the Group 1"
When does racing start getting serious about jockey safety?
The widespread "well that's racing " attitude has to change
How good do these old Melbourne Cup fields look in hindsight?(1991-1994)
- SUPER IMPOSE running 4th carrying 60kgs, giving 9kgs to LET'S ELOPE.
- Having WFA horses like SUPER IMPOSE and BETTER LOOSEN UP going around in the Melbourne Cup.
- 13kgs weight spread top to bottom
/1
Massive response to Terry Bailey's video piece yesterday shows that:
-Huge need for real journalism and critical oversight in racing media
-Massive discontent amongst core racing fans about how racing is being run
Racing media and administrators really need to start listening
A major concern with the Caulfield Master Plan was how awkwardly it interfaced with the existing racecourse, with so much squeezed into a small space.
The heritage listed main gate which used to be complemented by century old trees, now faces a two metre high concrete wall.
Extraordinary amount of positive commentary on racing Twitter re how good Sandown is over the last month.
It was quite noticeable yesterday that this was a racing crowd - they were actually there for the racing. A product many running the sport seem to have lost faith in.
Just compare the size of the fields and the depth of racing and the racing patterns between the two feature meetings this weekend, Moonee Valley Friday night and Sandown Sunday to see why we need to keep Sandown for racing
MRC members remember to vote by Tuesday.

Who would have thought totally changing an 150 year old racecourse through a rushed planning process without adequately consulting members will lead to this...🤔
A serving committee member at the Melbourne Racing Club is leading a motion to spill the board in protest over matters including the controversial new mounting yard at Caulfield.

Racing Twitter is awash with Sandown love tonight.
Great weather, great racing and a real buzz. Crowd with a genuine interest in quality racing.
But no added MRC promotions, activities, food vans, activations, etc
Except the seats got their first coat of paint in 30 years.
Time and time again we see assets sold off with snazzy promises of a better tomorrow that never eventuate.
Racecourse land is being used to prop up decade after decade of poor administration in racing.
It's a slow spiral to extinction.
/END
Full card from 1992 Cox Plate Day.
There were more runners in 8 races than we have in 10 races this week.
Never see field sizes this big on Cox Plate day anymore and we get small fields more often than not.
Racing continues to produce the most amazing stories , but this is right up there with the very best.
Just imagine racing fans all over Australia roaring and leaping out of their chairs as the gap opened up and Damian Oliver burst through.
Anyone remember when they used to train horses at Caulfield?
Demolition of Community Stables on Booran Road (next to the dog park) commenced this morning
Once again, there was no communication to members at the AGM last week or via email that this work was about to commence.
/1
Just in case anyone was in any doubt that property development (not racing) is main focus of racing administration these days.
Continually selling off assets is not a sign of success. It's a sign of failure.
Money disappears and then the next asset is sold and so on and so on.
This was the raceday experience of an owner attending Sandown yesterday.
We would be keen to hear from other owners, members and race day patrons about what they thought yesterday.
We have to say the track raced magnificently. Issues are on the other side of the fence.
MRC election has sent an extremely strong message on the future of Sandown with three pro Sandown candidates elected.
Looking forward to improvement in consultation and communication to members.

For those of you on the wild goose chase for an open newsagency to get a Friday public holiday
@Winning_Post
there is a nice big stack at Caulfield Newsagency opposite Caulfield train station.
CAULFIELD HERITAGE UPDATE
Last week the Community Stables (1960s) on Booran Rd were demolished by MRC
The 150 year history of training at Caulfield has largely disappeared without trace, with nothing left or planned to acknowledge this part of club and community history
/1
New
@Racing
graphics change adds what exactly?
Can't fit in the full name of the racecourse, or class and conditions of the race, but we get temperature and rainfall over the last week on display whilst they are running - which won't change from race to race.
A look at proposed $200 million Caulfield Grand Pavilion
-new stand only has approx 350 seats, all outdoors
-current Rupert Clarke stand is 1800 undercover seats (photo:filled to capacity before Caulfield Guineas)
Flemington Club Stand made same mistake of not enough seating

Detailed story on MRC election candidates. Highly likely Sandown candidates will succeed and be majority
Personally we are looking for someone qualified in counting the number of jockeys and has a vision that extends beyond "can we pour concrete there?"🤷♂️
Demolition work continuing today on Community Stables at Caulfield
Whilst there is plenty of excess land here for development, was it really that difficult to keep one or two blocks of stalls to record the history of training as the MRC heritage report recommended?
Sponsorship change at Caulfield, allows briefest glimpse of Heritage Tote Board (1952). Almost certainly oldest + largest left in Australia
Looks in great condition!
Was to be demolished, but saved by Heritage Victoria. Strange they allow it to be covered in advertising🤔
Caulfield Master Plan approved via fast track; no advertising,no consultation, no appeal right,
"abject failure of process, denial of procedure fairness"
Now MRC emails importance of "established models to protect and serve"
Exactly what MRC avoided for Master Plan approval!!
No of on-course tote operators is a handful. Hard to believe this is major overhead?
Took someone new to Flemington races recently
-Have you got money in your betting account?
-Why would I have a betting account for!?
Why make it more difficult to attract new people to racing ?
With Cup Week upon us it's time to pass on our thanks and appreciation to the trusty reliable
@Winning_Post
as the last racing newspaper standing.
Totally invaluable tool for punters.
Now excuse us whilst we mark and scribble all over you incoherently for the next few hours.
Full steam ahead for Caulfield Master Plan, suspect a lot of members are going to be shocked at level of tree removal that has occurred.
There is a fair bit of outrage in the local community and we don't think the club has done enough to communicate the works to members.
Massive crowds at Sandown today for the car racing. Once again showing that if you put on quality events people will go there.
This Sandown car racing promo video below is simply amazing. Just imagine if horse racing treated and revered Sandown like this !!
#SaveSandown
We were first to ring alarm bells on Caufield Master Plan back in Jan 22
Rushed planning process, poor communication, no member consultation and total disregard for heritage
End result poorly functioning sea of ugly, cheap concrete + ashpalt
Who thought this was a good idea?
Following up on our post from yesterday about how great it would be for the Caulfield tote board to be retained or relocated, here is a detailed thread on What We Know and What We Don't Know about the Caulfield Master Plan
(our assumptions from publicly available information)
/1
BREAKING: In a surprise turn of events to clear up the mess at the MRC, the entire committee will now be decided via a three point shootout.
* Also saves a fortune in legal fees
Major themes of MRC election candidates:
- retaining racing at Sandown
- location of mounting yard at Caulfield
- member consultation regards Master Plan.
There are an awful lot of disgruntled members about the way these issues have been handled.
Time to vote for a change.
Extremely sad day for punters with news that
@TheOzSportsman
is ceasing operations as of May 5 2023 weekend.
As an old time paper form guide user, The Sportsman layout was fantastic and easy to glide through and spot all the info you needed.
Invaluable punting tool for punters.
Some of the worse outcomes of the Caulfield Master Plan are now clearly visible
Imagine prime racecourse space which could be attractive lawns and trees used on raceday, being totally moonscaped with bitumen
Who on earth needs to park a few metres from outside running rail?
We know we complain a lot that the MRC seems to neglect it's history but claiming in the latest annual report that a Caulfield Cup crowd of 25,000 last year was a record is pretty much a science fiction total timeline reset.
Traditional Boxing Day at the Caulfield "races" in the Medallion Bar, with live music over all the interstate races and no Sydney or Adelaide form in the race book 🏇🧐🤔
* Also not our note, lots of complaints.
Caulfield Maple Entrance was one of the best raceday entrances around - entering to sound of horses, green lawns, trees, heritage stalls and red brick.
Whole area is totally moonscaped with asphalt and concrete under the Master Plan.
This is "progress" straight out of the 1960s
---- QUESTIONS ABOUT SANDOWN ----
Leading up to MRC Members forum this weekend, here is a list of questions we would like to see answered about Sandown.
Do you have any other others?
Add them in the comments below and we will try and ask them on the day.
#SaveSandown
The response to the Caulfield Master Plan has been underwhelming to say the least.
Members expected so much more for the $60 million dollars spent.
How did we end up in this position?🤔

All those punters begging for refunds on Smashing Eagle instead of passing thoughts to stable staff and connections on the loss of a really exciting horse to watch 😢🤦♂️
Suprised how dirty and dishevelled the new Caulfield mounting yard walls look already. Especially as the back drop for post race interviews.
Maybe if anyone out there has a few old tins of paint in the back shed, we can organise a MRC members working bee and get it sorted out.
Illustration of demolition plans for Caulfield racecourse. Shocked at level of destruction of history, lack of consultation and communication. Bypassing all consultation processes on loved and cherished state significant historical site is simply not acceptable
/1
According to this story rezoning Sandown would cost the MRC around $6 million a year in additional rates
Question was asked at the last three MRC AGMs and was dodged every time
Luckily, there are plenty of apartments across from the road from Caulfield racecourse where the jockeys can hang out between races 🤪
Imagine building a $300 million master plan and not even doing a jockey head count.🤷♂️
Today Heritage Council of Victoria issued Interim Heritage Protection for Caulfield Racecourse, after application by Glen Eira Historical Society.
First time any heritage protection at Caulfield in 150 years. We have no idea what happens now, hopefully more consultation at least.
Works underway at Caulfield to create a new horse path along the front of the grandstand and entering the track (ironically) via the old mounting yard gate in front of winning post.
Always the plan !! 🤪
Racing on a Saturday at Sandown with only 8 races is so totally retro. All they need to do is bring back the Quaddie brackets.
Social media boasting rights for anyone who can give us this Quaddie from Sandown Cup Day 1994
Everyone on racing twitter is so bloody negative.
Personally we think the Racing Victoria innovation of allowing pit stops during horse races to replace shoes that have come off is a sure fire winner.
Conflicting claims about how the Caulfield Master Plan is being funded
- Members were told development was entirely self funded
- Now claims of a $160 million bank loan
Wonder what the true story is?
From The Archives
According to the form guide you could get 20-1 for LET'S ELOPE with 50 kgs in 1991 Turnbull Stakes
..and then gone all up into Caulfield Cup, Mackinnon Stakes and Melbourne Cup.
Perfect post-race betting tactics with the clarity of 30 years to think about it
NOTE: Sandown Races 5,6 Hillside track, other races Lakeside
The Oakleigh Plate starts on the Princess Hwy overpass, goes through car park, across the pools on the lawn and finishes with the first to touch shipping container past the winning post (pretty sure have that right)🧐
Last MRC election there was a strong

vote.
MRC members again have the chance to vote for Sandown candidates 👇
Caitrin Kelly
Tim Johnson
Chris Fox
This is one election where your vote really makes a huge difference. Remind your MRC member friends to vote.

How good was racing at Flemington yesterday?
SANS DOUTE last, runs down NAJEM SUHAIL had kicked clear
Brilliant ride CASCADIAN last, runs down PRIDE Of JENNI, classic Australian Cup
Extraordinary staying effort MARK TWAIN wins from long last
Plus ESTRIELLA
Plus SEA WHAT I SEE
Really sad to see the glorious old tote board at the end of the Caulfield straight boarded off for demolition.
@MelbRacingClub
is there no way it can be relocated intact and retained ?
Does anyone on Racing Twitter have good photos of the Caulfield tote board in operation ?
The MRC can't afford to open the gates one hour before first race for members and owners
but
can afford to hire a overseas artist who has never been to Caulfield to design their spring campaigns
Any wonder why there is such strong momentum for change?
Vote!!
Using a "renowed" New York artist who knows fuck all about racing and the Caulfield Cup.

Really don't understand punters sometimes.
Last race Flemington RIGHT TO PARTY goes around $7 off a last start good win down the straight, competitive at group level, up against a Ballarat wet track winner, never raced this level, never been down the straight at $2🤷♂️
