The amazing thing about these places in the US is that you cannot walk between any of them. I stayed in a hotel on one of these developments and there was a restaurant next door that I could not walk to, and had to drive 10 minutes around a big loop. It is incredible.
I remember we once had a supply teacher at school who insisted on using everyone's full names. One guy was called Ben, and she called him Benjamin. He pointed out his actual name on his birth certificate was just Ben and she wouldn't have it. We all understood she was an idiot.
Don't let the narrative about this be
"JK Rowling in internet spat about whether trans women are women"
It's not
This is "JK Rowling stands with woman who lost court case about her choice to be abusive towards trans people in her workplace, so her contract was not renewed"
It's very on the nose that Europe is getting a wave of hard right female leaders just after years of us warning that the right is using womanhood as a shield against accusations of fascism, and that the centrist/liberal media has swallowed it wholesale
I am genuinely not shitting you here - this is not a parody - the international chess federation is restricting trans women from competing in women's chess competitions.
Chess.
So FIDE just published (yesterday) a list of anti-trans regulations, like it was "the biggest threat of women in chess".
Can someone tell me what qualifies as an official FIDE event? Will I be allowed to play the French Championship in 3 days? The European Club Cup in September?
Transphobes are so boring. We play football, they complain. They tell us to get our own teams so we get them and they complain. There is no pleasing them because they hate us and they hate seeing us happy. Our happiness is the best revenge.
Everyone immediately understood she was using the names she wanted to use for people as a power move, irrespective of whether that's what they wanted or whether it was even technically correct. That's the only thing anyone remembers from that lesson, not the actual content.
Acting like a penis and creating conflict where it doesn't actually exist makes you worse at your job, and if your job is teaching people, you're letting them down. End of story.
After my ex and I split up when I transitioned she married a Conservative councillor, so if anything I'm the one who should be getting the article in the Guardian here
It's increasingly apparent that people like JKR are just going to call literally every bit of pushback or question they receive a death or rape threat, and call everyone who opposes them a rapist, paedophile or abuser. It is an insult to survivors.
The thing with this is that I've no idea to this day whether his birth certificate actually says Ben or Benjamin. Neither does she. Doesn't really matter, does it?
For anyone not paying attention, the gender critical belief system at the moment is that trans women are men pretending to be women in order to ruin women's sports by winning everything except we're deliberately losing at them in order to not look like we're winning
Genuine Q for gender crits: If a man corners me on the street in the dark & threatens me, do you honestly think that if I pipe up with "Ahh no mate you've got it all wrong, I'm really a geezer!" that he'll go "Ah sorry fella, on you go! Sorry about that! & leave me alone?
The media should not be allowing ANYONE to forget that the same government that is panicking and forcing London and the SE into another lockdown was, THREE DAYS AGO, taking legal action against schools to force them to reopen despite having COVID cases. Criminal incompetence
@guardian
When I was at school, " gay" was the main insult and literally nobody used "queer" as an insult. So please don't use "gay". See how this works?
World Netball have banned trans women from women's netball. And judging by this, they have banned almost everyone on the planet from women's netball. Almost all women of any type have testosterone.
@Philby1976
It's so weird. Like I thought "yeah whatever I'll just walk" and then there's absolutely nowhere to actually walk other than the shoulder of a highway!
If you think men and women can't compete on a level playing field in chess because of fundamental biological differences, you can only be a misogynist. No ifs, no buts.
I don't know how to make this clearer to the average member of the public, but the British media routinely lies about trans people. Not inadvertently spreading false information, not being duped by dodgy orgs- they knowingly and deliberately make shit up about trans issues. Daily
Absolutely CANNOT WAIT to see the reaction of the "well if I go to a country I will simply abide by their culture and rules" brigade on here when they see this 😂
When I was at school, everyone used 'gay' as a slur and only older adults used 'queer' as one. I'm not even young. This idea that nobody is allowed to reclaim slurs because someone else might not like it is unworkable, because of differences in experience like this
They came up with TRA as an attempt to cement the idea of TERF as a slur, i.e. they thought we'd all get angry and call TRA a slur, and so they could say 'OK well so is TERF so checkmate'
Except none of us fell for it so they just have this acronym normal people don't understand
To update people who aren't following this - this bill means that if anyone doesn't like the look of a kid, they can accuse them of being trans and the way the organisers will have to check if by inspecting their genitals. This sounds hyperbolic but in fact is not.
The worst thing about being trans in the UK right now is that we're not allowed to criticise people AT ALL. People can openly call us paedophiles, abusers and freaks, and if we talk back even slightly, they scream about it and play the victim. It's ASTONISHINGLY exhausting
Incidentally if you wanted a measure of where we're at, it's that I, a trans woman and trustee of Trans Pride, felt I had to reassure people that it's perfectly legal to be nasty to us in order to me to feel I'll be listened to. Think about that.
It's about time we talked about the serious topic of desisting gender criticals. They won't let us talk about it, but these are people who are making huge decisions having massive implications on their lives & then regretting it. I saw one on TV crying that he'd lost his family
@rebelraising
Yeah it was always yikes. I'm not sure I'd be positioning it that way uncritically if I didn't want to appear to be a racist, but I suppose they are unfussed about that
I looked into what this was all about, and apparently the usual suspects have been abusing Kew Gardens staff because a couple of staff profiles have pronouns on them. There are a lot of deeply unwell people in the anti-trans lobby
We're deeply disappointed to see some of our staff and students subjected to online harassment.
Hatred and intolerance have no place at Kew, and we're more committed than ever to embracing diversity and creating an inclusive environment for all. 💚
Hold on! I just read it again and it says that trans men will be stripped of all titles they won in women's competitions when they transitioned.
This is absolutely BATSHIT. It's uninformed gross sexism and transphobia.
If these organisations are just going to fold and delete things under pressure from bigots, I'd rather they just didn't bother in the first place. In deleting, they just allows bigots to build a portfolio of "X had to delete!" to scare other orgs away from doing the right thing
Yesterday we posted a tweet promoting cervical screening, which referred to ‘anyone with a cervix’.
The tweet was part of a regional campaign aimed at the LGBTQ+ community, to encourage trans men and those that identify as non-binary, to book a cervical screening. 👇
Your yearly reminder that the list of women killed by men in the UK that gets read out by Jess Philips is incomplete because the compiler of the list is anti-trans, so Naomi Hersi is not on it.
I did a Parkrun today. Haven't actually done one for ages and this week it felt important to a) support the event and b) take my space there. So I got this vest out and went along, and it was great!
The year is 2025. The few survivors of the great plague of 2020 roam the irradiated wastelands of the planet, singing Happy Birthday to themselves constantly. Nobody really remembers why.
Typical UK newspaper article:
WOMAN JAILED FOR LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE FOR BELIEVING WOMEN HAVE A VAGINA
[paragraph 4] Rose West, 44, also murdered 10 people
@gagasrule
The point is she didn't care what was on the birth certificate, she cared what she thought should be there. Which I suspect is what you'd do.
One of my favourite genre of posts are the "I've had FFS a couple of years ago, VFS a year ago, BA6 months ago and been on hormones for 6yrs, how do I come out to my family" ones. Like, how do they not know
I have decided that Blade Runner (inc 2049) are a trans allegory because:
1. Everyone hates us
2. Everyone thinks they can tell
3. We're overrepresented in sex work
4. Everyone is astounded by the idea we can have children
5. We're portrayed as inexplicably having super strength
Let me be absolutely clear - the stuff some so-called feminists are spewing about Caster Semenya is worthy of the far right, and if you're a feminist letting them get away with it you are part of the problem
The transphobic trans woman who phoned into Jeremy Vine when I was on yesterday said she ran with "biological...people" and it just makes me think that there's a hell of a lot of people making shit up as they go along with this topic. Like, are we not biological?
They fucking did it. We've been memeing this for years because nobody thought they'd actually do it. But they did it. They blamed trans people for the climate crisis
Dear trans Twitter, sorry to have to tell you this, but I have it on good authority from Mumsnet, that we are also responsible for the climate crisis.
I would therefore like to apologise to cis people everywhere - I honestly wasn't intending to cause a mass extinction event.
To trans people who think we can just concede on sport to focus on the other stuff - remember that the stuff YOU care about might just be someone else's bargaining chip.
I didn't tweet about this because I was too angry about it, but I picked my partner up last night and she was in tears because a group of men had approached her making dog noises as she came out of a shop. And today
@BBCNews
tries to make out it's us who are sexual predators
Just seen someone say their solution to the fuel price rises is that they've always just put £30 of petrol in. So they say it's clever because it always costs them £30 and so saves money. I don't really know what to say
I think a lot of the conversation about this misses a key point - this isn't a failure of media fact checking. People who ran this *know* it isn't true and they ran with it anyway because it suits them to do so.
This story is bonkers
No one identifies as a cat
Any journalist that fact checked the source material - would have known that
It's been shamelessly blown out of proportion by a media addicted to transphobia
This is the origin of baseless claims 👇
I've scrolled back TWO WEEKS on Fair Play for Women's timeline & they have not mentioned anything other than anti-trans nonsense. No mention of anything else during a time of enormous public conversation about women's safety. Can media stop pretending these are women's groups?
This is the kind of response I'm getting, in case anyone wondered what kind of sentiment Rowling and Forstater are defending here. I could've written this to myself 10 years ago
TRANS PEOPLE: We love gender recognition but it has problems
GOVT: great we'll fix them
TRANS PEOPLE: do you want to know what they are
GOVT: absolutely not
Who knew that trans rights would be saved by a man in a vest playing Donkey Kong 64 whilst talking to a US Congresswoman and a man who made Doom. This is amazing. I can't even.
#thanksgraham
If it helps anyone to understand, remember that Forstater was a contractor at this organisation. So they were less of am employer, more of a customer. And you know what we say about not buying services from people with whom you disagree?
News on Victoria Atkins' emergency puberty blockers ban. Wes Streeting's position is that, subject to the outcome of the court proceedings and consultation, he will renew it and convert it into a permanent ban.
I see "Buy British" is trending. I mean, fine, but the problem is I can't eat transphobic and racist opinion columns, and I'm not sure what else we produce in any significant volume
Trans people who think that cis people would leave us alone if we'd only concede ground on sports can absolutely go fuck themselves. Your lack of solidarity is noted.
I've heard gender critical people bite the heads off otters and use the remaining otter corpse to club turtle doves to death. The LGB Alliance has never condemned this
My 'favourite' trope in the cesspit that is discussions about trans people in the UK is "no-one is saying trans people shouldn't be respected/have rights/be included..." which is used by anti-trans campaigners and fence sitters alike. Such an obvious lie.
"Been accused of reading erotic Harry Potter fanfic on the train yesterday"
"What happened Helen?"
"Got accused of reading erotic Harry Potter fanfic on the train"
"Yeah but why?"
"I was reading erotic Harry Potter fanfic"
"on the train?"
"Yeah it was on the train"
Has anyone ever known, encountered or even heard of a real person who would be is or is against their kid being gay, but would be or is OK with them being trans?
3) protecting men - at Barcelona 1992 Zhang Shan, a woman, won gold at the (mixed) skeet shooting, suggesting it was possible for men and women to compete fairly. At Atlanta 96, there was a women's skeet shooting and a separate men's one. Go figure
The harassment accounts have suddenly arrived in the replies to this, so assuming someone's posted it somewhere. Wonderful that they're so upset by people just being normal doing normal things
I did a Parkrun today. Haven't actually done one for ages and this week it felt important to a) support the event and b) take my space there. So I got this vest out and went along, and it was great!
Just seen a supposedly serious gendercrit researcher claim that 8.5% of participants in women's football are trans women. How do they get away with just lying like this?
OK I am receiving 10 million tweets asking why there are separate gender categories for chess in the first place. The honest answer is I have no idea because I don't overly follow chess, but there are 4 reasons for this normally, not all will apply in all cases, cont...
As yet another trans woman has been stabbed by teenagers, we're going to the polls this morning wondering whether ANYONE in our government/media class is going to speak up and do something about the normalisation of far right anti-trans rhetoric fuelling this
And if you *don't* honestly think that, what do you think would happen? How does this scenario play out in your mind? Do you just downright not acknowledge that trans women are EVER harrassed by men? What?
4) unthinking tradition - probably more prevalent than people think - a lot of people just unthinkingly segregate even when there's no real reason to do so
Gen Z won't remember this, but in the early 2000s every internet forum would have some blow-up every year or so where someone would piss off the admin and get banned, then set up their own forum and get their friends to join it, and run it as their own personal fiefdom
2) providing separate space to grow women's sport - most sports are male centric and so it's harder for women to get into them and feel welcome, so sports will often create female specific categories for this reason.
