The only thing that bugs me about (the excellent) THE IDEA OF YOU: the scene when Anne Hathaway feels self-conscious about her body in a bathing suit around a buncha 20-somethings. As if Anne Hathaway wouldn’t be the hottest person *anywhere* in a bikini, one-piece, potato sack…
Sending all the peace and love in the world to Jonathan Glazer, a good man. Wish every single one of his “The Zone of Interest” collaborators, from the actors to the film’s distributor, issued a joint statement in support of him & his words.
Yes, GLASS ONION should’ve stayed in theaters & made a bajillion dollars. But to me, the question is less, why hasn’t a company whose model is streaming kept it in theaters; & more, why don’t we have lots more GLASS ONION-type flicks from major studios whose model IS theatrical.
Feel like the discourse around whether

’s feminism is too obvious or whether it is feminist has been missing the point that the film wasn’t trying to outsmart anyone. As I said in my review, sometimes, u want to rehear the obvious. Some thoughts I just texted a friend… x
Cinemas have always been sacred to me. Both an escape from a young age & where I grew into my identity. I learned who I was & whom I wanted to become in movie theaters. I hope our industry survives these necessary measures & we can watch movies in packed theaters again soon. 💔🙏🏻
Who cares about stupid Bill Maher’s stupid opinions on Barbie?
What you should instead care about: these beautiful photos of Ann Roth that I took in front of the Barbie poster... 💕
"I grew up watching foreign language films...like Citizen Kane and Jaws (...)" might just be one of the greatest lines spoken in any acceptance speech ever. Thank you for this, Alfonso Cuarón, on behalf of everyone for whom English isn't the default.

The scene in TICK, TICK… BOOM! where Stephen Sondheim gives a heartbroken Jonathan Larson enough oxygen to go on a little longer is a thing of beauty. Any self-doubting newbie creator who once heard “You’ve got something, be proud” from their hero will have their heart soar.
Personally, I’m ready to stop talking about The Slap & instead talk about why jokes at the expense of smart movies are thought to be OK/funny at a show meant the celebrate highest achievements in cinema. (e.g. The one about The Power of the Dog being too hard to get through.) 🤷🏻♀️
James Cameron is that dying breed of filmmaker who can package the most accessible of human emotions & a beautifully coherent story inside a spectacular & innovative Hollywood package. Earns every minute of its running time & all your feelings. Loved it. 1/2

It’s a sad/dated perspective, to think a kiss is “a reward for a woman.” (It’s as much a reward/release for Powell’s character.) Or that romance and other types of fulfillments/professional successes can’t co-exist in a woman’s storyline. I hate this binary thinking.
Why was the Daisy Edgar-Jones (Kate) and Glen Powell (Tyler) kiss cut from

? According to director Lee Isaac Chung, it had to do with what Kate's "ultimate reward" was at the film's conclusion.

If Jeff Nichols were to make a Scorsese mafioso movie, it would look very much like BIKERIDERS. Exceptional ensemble work, and a stunning performance from Jodie Comer. Side note: few things as captivating on the big screen as Austin Butler smoking. Strong start to

KNIVES OUT is a fun ‘fuck you’ to rich white Trump voters, wrapped in a crafty Agatha Christie package. VERY pro immigration. And none of this is subtle. Enjoy it in a crowd.

Woke up, still feeling furious about the bullying Elsie Fisher was subjected to. Look at this 15 year old-- she is classier & more grown-up than most of Twitter combined.

“Smartphone? Oh, don’t you start using that filthy little word. Whoever invented that ought to be spanked in public. I don’t even know what that word means! What is that word? Fucking Smartphone! They should be hung, drawn, and quartered. Fucking Smartphone.”
Remember that Sam Mendes’ 1917 is co-written by a woman. Her name is Krysty Wilson-Cairns. This is her feature debut as a writer; one in which she conceived a one-shot war film. When it comes to female voices, it’s not just screen presence or the director’s chair that counts.

Armie Hammer plays a "cocaine-snorting, orgy-hosting, obnoxious, and relentlessly optimistic CEO" in Sorry to Bother You. The leads are Lakeith Stanfield (telemarketer on the rise) & Tessa Thompson (brilliant gallery artist). Sign me the f*ck up please.

MARRIAGE STORY absolutely broke me. What a perfect, p-e-r-f-e-c-t script; the kind of writing that makes you wonder if someone was secretly listening to you during your most private moments in your relationship. A masterpiece for the ages from Noah Baumbach.

Tiffany Haddish: "There are a lot of people like me that you don't know about. But they're coming, because I'm keeping the door open." SHE OWNS THIS ROOM, and the world better be her oyster now. ❤️

Remember how it was "a weak Sundance", but we got Leave No Trace, Hereditary, Cameron Post, Eighth Grade, Sorry to Bother You, Skate Kitchen, Blindspotting, The Tale, Tully, Three Identical Strangers, Hearts Beat Loud, RBG etc...etc...
"Weak Sundance" is always fake news. 😘

watchers, can’t even imagine how the nominees in those 8 categories feel right now.
Especially cruel in a year where everyone anticipated to be a part of a normal ceremony after last year’s Covid disruptions.
I love THE NOTEBOOK, great film. But referring to Gena Rowlands as “The Notebook actress” is like referring to Robert De Niro as the “Meet The Parents actor.”
People like Scorsese aren't gatekeepers. They invite you in with their knowledge and taste, and you can watch more or less everything they recommend whenever you feel like it. You know who/what the real gatekeeper is? Your own lack of curiosity and laziness.
Tenet (or any movie) releasing overseas in countries that handled the pandemic smartly makes sense. No one has to wait for us while we keep sprinting backwards. We had this coming.
Tomorrow, an excellent movie opens in theaters: NEVER RARELY SOMETIMES ALWAYS, by Eliza Hittman. Not sure what will happen to its opening weekend. I weep for the bad timing & will just say: whenever/however you get to it, this will be one of the best films you’ll see all year.
We’re all certain PARASITE will land a Best Picture nom, yes? But what if...it also wins? I feel it can make history by becoming the 1st non-English Lang film to claim the prize.
BP or not—thrilled that a Cannes-winning critical darling is also proving to be a hit w/ crowds! 🍑

It's one thing to want MORE reviews written by women. We all want that. It's entirely another to suggest all or most women will or won't like something. The latter is insulting. Women critics aren't here to conform to anyone's perception of them. We don't have uniform tastes.
Frankly, a filmmaker is ALLOWED to be upset that the movie he’s made for big screen will be streaming the same day it opens in theaters. The guy didn’t say “risk your life & go see it.” He didn’t say “my movie matters more than the pandemic.” He’s sad, I get it. This site‘s dumb.
Can’t help but think that Taylor Simone Ledward‘s dress makes a regal statement. Maybe it’s a visual and cultural nod to Wakanda. That was such a gut-wrenching moment & speech. Rest in power, Chadwick Boseman.

They're in deep shit so naturally a good time to mention ISIS and some imaginary wins. Can his followers really be THIS stupid?
BELFAST is sweet, if somewhat unremarkable. Clearly a deeply personal childhood story Kenneth Branagh had to get out of his system & u can’t help but respect that. Like his ROMA but stylistically very different. Caitríona Balfe’s performance is my favorite thing in it.

Nomadland should’ve been the final award.
The show needed a host. Period.

None of these missteps happened because of the pandemic. 🤷🏻♀️

One esp heartbreaking scene in THE FABELMANS sings cinema’s power to reveal details/truths the eye would otherwise miss. If there was ever a love letter to movies… Soul-baring work from Steven Spielberg, the same child-of-divorce filmmaker at the heart of E.T. Sublime.

kinda brings its point home, no? If you like it, you’re not sophisticated enough as a feminist. If you don’t like it, you’re betraying sisterhood. YOU’RE ALWAYS DOING IT WRONG!
RIP, William Friedkin. Single-handedly responsible for many of young Tomris’ nightmares.
(Also, a reminder: KILLER JOE was one of the best McConaissance movies.)
From Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s nomination statement today: “Even if you lose someone you truly love, life goes on. It is a harsh life, but it is not without a pinch of hope.”

. Yes, it's lovely & fun. Yes it properly honors female friendships. You know what else? IT'S SO WELL-DIRECTED. Olivia Wilde is a goddam natural behind the camera & commands the film w/ actual visual ideas. That to me was the most exciting aspect of this film.
Don’t think it’s a coincidence that both Bong Joon-ho’s PARASITE & Jordan Peele’s US are popular hits. I hope studios connect the dots here—audiences respond to themes around class (under-explored in mainstream American cinema nowadays) & crave adventurous genre filmmaking.
I mean, I am also curious: when did one's stance on a comic book film come to define how he/she ranks on the feminism scale? It's all very annoying & I'll show myself out.

I wish interviewing a filmmaker for a film one disliked or hated was more common a practice in our field these days. This very informed, respectful but uncompromising interview is proof that we need them in film culture.
Funny how

manages to be thoroughly feminist without shoving down the image of an ideal, strong woman down our throats. More messy, problematic, foul-mouthed women on our screens please!
JOKER: what an ugly, empty film. Lacks a moral backbone, unaware of what it says about power & those abused by it. Work of someone who thought it’d be cool to make a SeriousComicBookFiilm™️. If you’re going to borrow from Scorsese, you’d better KNOW what you’re doing.
Some personal/professional news: I interviewed THE ETERNAL DAUGHTER + SOUVENIR I/II collaborators Joanna Hogg & [deep breath] Martin Scorsese and witnessed the most magical cinephiliac discussion of my life. I’ll always love 2022 for this. For

It's really crazy that so many people here seem to be only comfortable w/ films that feature saintly people engaging in thoroughly wholesome behavior that they unambiguously approve of. Life doesn't work like that, art doesn't work like that... Also, maybe don't be so boring etc.
