Looking forward to getting started on this project. We'll be exploring how universities should be mitigating risks faced by those doing LGBT+ research, while building spaces of solidarity through which to support one-another.
[CN pregnancy, misgendering, transphobia]
I'm 36 weeks pregnant with my 2nd child. In my first pregnancy, I didn't bother to come out as non-binary, cos I assumed there'd be no point, particularly as our midwife seemed baffled by two people she assumed were a same sex couple /
So yeh, my point is that all this bullshit about mothers being erased is obviously based on lies. Yet, I see it creeping more and more into local parent groups and it's scary/frustrating/tiring/boring. It doesn't feel a great time to be pregnant and trans or a parent & trans. /
** there are ofc exceptions to this. The lovely nursery our kid goes to has been brilliant at not misgendering me. An online birth class I went to last week used inclusive language so seemlessly I doubt most people in the room noticed (& there were 6000+ of them).
My kid is flummoxed at why people look baffled when she tries to explain our parent setup. I worry about her outing me in certain situations & what the response might be, but I equally don't want her to feel any shame. The balance feels almost impossible /
Despite this, it turns out I was right the first time. It was pointless bothering trying assert myself as anything other than a lady/woman*/mother. I've been constantly misgendered through my whole pregnancy, and expect I will be through labour and beyond. /
4 years later & I thought I'd approach things differently. In the first conversation with my midwife I told her my pronouns and that I didn't want to be referred to as a lady/woman*/mother. I wrote this all over my notes /
It doesn't change when ur kid is born either. Early years practitioners** attempting to at least get my parent name correct in front of my kid is more important to me than what I get called when she's not around. But that rarely happens, if you're at a baby group, you're a mummy/
As a non-binary trans person who's given birth to two babies in the last 6 years I heard the word chestfeeding ZERO times, so I'm sure this is going to be a hugely impactful intervention
It's not "ideology" it's inclusion. It's taken decades to get to the point where trans, gender diverse & lesbian & gay parents can have half a chance of being understood & not treated like freaks when in hospital or maternity & now people want to go backwards.
Whole day yesterday stressing over whether to cancel a seminar w invited trans speaker in light of colleagues signing the letter supporting Stock. On Zoom settings til 9pm to try make it safe. Up at 6 on my nonworking day writing an intro/ground rules. Who's being silenced?
Before having a kid, I figured the best thing I could do to have solidarity with those with caring responsibilities was to not work over my hours and feed into that expectation that it's what we should all be doing. Now I have a kid, I stand by that.
So many academics in social justice fields think their work is so important or so different to anyone elses that it justifies them not striking. Got news for you: it's not!
Not used to my tweets being interacted with by so many people, but worth noting the number of cis women who also feel frustrated by the 'lady-ing' and 'mummy-ing' in pregnancy/childhood services, and would prefer the use of (less patronising) gender neutral language

PhD funding opportunities in the areas of LGBT, Queer, Trans and/or Disability Studies in with
@EleanorFormby
and
@mannymadriaga
- please share widely. I'd encourage applicants to get in touch for a chat about their ideas. More details and links in thread below.
Today at baby group:
"she's a girl so she's got no motor ability but very good social skills"
"Oh, he just doesn't stop moving"
"Yeah,well, he's a boy"
The babies were both less than 3 months old
Just challenged the hairdresser's price when they tried to charge me for a £17 'ladies dry cut' instead of a £8 'gents clipper cut' for a short back & sides. Tbf, the hairdresser was cool about it when I pointed it out, but still squirming inside from the whole interaction
The ride transphobia in academia is continuously given a platform both within academia and by the media. It's absolutely everywhere, and makes doing being trans in academia & trans studies work so difficult. /
More one-sided transphobic nonsense from the Guardian which views trans people as objects to be scrutinised and debated. Not people. Not individuals. Just a problem. Disgraceful. Try speaking to pro-trans feminist academics about they bullying THEY receive from transphobes.
Why are we assuming that all students have access to wifi to access online teaching and laptops to write assignments? Continuing to assess is an equality issue
@onni_gust
Thanks! I find it frustrating as much as anything. Always conflicted between being conscious of how stretched services are and how overworked staff are + then realising how much difference it makes when people do make the effort. Nearly there now anyway, will be very relieved!
'The revised guidance on relationships, sex and health education ... is likely to contain further restrictions on teaching about gender and identity, with teachers told to instead explain “biological” facts'
Transphobia 🤝🏻 anti sex ed
A chance encounter today has made me want to remind people that there continues to be a boycott of Disability and Society journal. The context of transphobia - in & out of academia - has got worse, not better since 2018 when I wrote this thread. Please do not enable this journal.
How many universities are going to be claiming the COVID and public health research coming from their academics in the REF, whilst steadfastly ignoring that same research themselves?
I couldn't agree with this more! A few years ago I was close to quitting academia when I had a (probably obvious) realisation that not working over my hours was political. I stopped feeling guilty for doing 9-5 and made it part of my work politics.
I'm seeing tweets along the lines of 'I always work more than contract so deserve a decent pension' & 'if academics didn't work beyond contract the sector would collapse'. Yes, this is the current position but let's not make overwork a condition for decent pay/pension 1/
New article where I reflect on responses to research about trans, queer & disabled people's access to toilets in the
@CCToiletTalk
project. I argue that universities need to pay attention to risks researchers (particularly those marginalised) face when doing public-facing work.
Research on toilets: fascinating, mundane – or dangerous?
The expectation for academics to be public-facing can bring risks,says
@JenSlater_
@CCToiletTalk
, especially when undertaking work connected to racism, ableism, sexism & transphobia.

Please note: for me this is not a call for 'debate' within the discipline. Trans people's lives and identities are not up for debate. As we argue in the article, debating the reality of trans people's lives doesn't make sense from a Disability Studies perspective
Feeling the love for my union branch
@UCUHallam
today who just voted though a trans solidarity motion which, I hope, will result in some resource and recognition for trans staff at Sheffield Hallam
Tried to explain to 3YO why we couldn't have a picnic on a beach that said 'private property' on it, and now she keeps asking 'why are rich people mean?'
I know it's already been said a million times, but can't recommend Disability Visibility edited by
@SFdirewolf
enough - get it, read it, share it - it's brilliant
Solidarity with Alison Phipps who has offered me advice and support a number of times over the last few years when trying to work out how to continue working within such toxic transphobic environments. What a shit show.
Everything that's happening is making me so nervous about being a trans parent about to enter the school system, but the thing that almost worries me most is the surprise of cis queer parents when I tell them I'm worried.
NB: I am a non-binary person who has birthed and is now chest-feeding my child. Counter to the transphobes position, my experiences of pregnancy and feeding do not make me a biological woman.
DS teaches us to be anti-reductive, to not essentialise bodies based on normative biological ideals, & to believe people when they tell us of their experiences, even if we don't experience those things ourselves. A transphobic position counters these core ethical principles
I'm trying to drum up for enthusiasm for striking. In all honesty, I feel exhausted. But I also know that if we don't get this ballot, we're even more fucked, and that they want that exhaustion to lead to apathy. So I'll be voting yes to striking and hope others do too.
On Monday we ballot for strike action in universities across the UK
We're fighting for dignity in work and in retirement

Pleased to have a new article published with

@cctoilettalk
FGEN: I want to publicly reiterate that I will not be attending and feel disappointed both in the outcome & process. Saying this now as incase anyone w more precarious work feels worried about withdrawal. I invite others w security to join me in making their withdrawal clear.
None of these things were on my list of things to do. I could have been working on my research, talking to students, sharing my work. Instead, so much time is sucked into worrying and preparing. Who's being silenced?
I'm assuming a lot of the goodwill and free labour that allows
@UKRI_News
to function is going to be withdrawn on the back of this absolutely appalling and cowardly statement
Yesterday, UKRI responded to a letter from Secretary of State, Michelle Donelan. Now we are publishing that response and the Terms of Reference for the review we are setting up.
WELCOME: We’re delighted to announce the appointment of ten scholars to the Editorial Board of The Sociological Review journal – and thank eight others who stepped down last year for their contributions.
I've made a quick google doc outlining some things to think about re: trans safety at online events, which I'm going to use to send to event organisers if asked to speak. Sharing here for feedback/ideas before I transfer onto my blog at some point
I will not be having anything else to do with Disability and Society whilst Michele Moore is editor in chief. As a discipline we need to be interrogating what is allowed to be published in one of our most prominent and well-read journals
Just returned proofs of an article reflecting on (mainly transphobic) reactions to our toilets research. Feel a bit nervous about it! Both how this will be reacted to (meta!) and cos it's the first thing I've written by myself* in....ages!!!
Please wear a mask if you can, including with colleagues in the office/in meetings. As someone with CEV family who may not have had much vaccine response (but looks after our kid), the idea of us having to go back to the office and in person meetings is terrifying.
So many pictures of people back in the office, having meetings where no one is wearing a mask. I get that it's uncomfortable to wear it all day but is mask wearing in meetings now not a thing?
My reflections on this now I feel slightly calmer. 1) this motion passed with: 18 for; 16 against; 11 abstain. This was the second time there was an attempt to debate the motion as previously an EGM was called which wasn't quorate
Making 'not working too much' a reality is harder for people in precarious work positions so those of us with permanent jobs have more responsibility to lower the expectation of what a 'good academic' is
5YO: can anyone go on that rainbow tram or just queer people?
Me: anyone can
5YO: so why's it rainbow?
Me: well, let me tell you about my current research where we're talking to queer people about their relationship to the rainbow & views on institutional...
The transition notes from J's beautiful nursery to school explain our family, my parent name and even my pronouns so perfectly it nearly made me cry. They've also captured her down to a tee. Gonna miss that place ❤️
We've never celebrated the dog's birthday, but at the weekend we will celebrate the dog's birthday, cos we need something to celebrate. It may or may not be the dog's actual birthday.
If any Dis Studs ppl are confused why I still go on abt & I'm still angry abt Dis & Soc & those that don't distance themselves enough from it, look up Bell V Tavistock & think about the impact this will have on trans (inc trans disabled) kids-this is exactly what M*ore stands for
Good news! 'PISSED OFF! Disability activists fighting for toilet access in the UK' - a chapter coauthored w

I'd not yet completed my training to sit on the AHRC Peer Review Council due to parental leave, but, following many others, have written to

to resign my position.
Encouraging to see others doing the same and hoping that more follow suit.

Babby just discovered that amazing chocolatey bit at the end of a Cornetto FOR THE FIRST TIME. Imagine the first time discovery of that secret nugget of deliciousness.
But I don't think this is really (or only) about caring. There are loads of reasons to avoid a culture of overwork - but for me, thinking about solidarity with those who had no choice but to not overwork was one that made my own not-working-too-much easier
Just awkwardly struggled to close a gate for a woman (farmer?) with messy curls in a bun and an orange boiler suit coming out of a field on a quad bike. It was definitely the first scene of a lesbian romcom.
The problem with taking it in turns with doing the kids bedtimes is I'm feeling pretty invested in the latest Worst Witch book and think they're gonna finish it tonight without me
Another day where instead of enjoying hanging out with my kid, I know I'm gonna be feeling guilty as my head's in trying to manage systemic academic transphobia (again), on a day I'm not even being paid.
I think we've got to be careful about asking for the REF to be cancelled. I'm obviously not a fan, but I can see getting rid of it resulting in a lot of redundancies, particularly for professional service staff, which really isn't what anyone needs right now
Too much COVID around for the queer barbers/don't have the energy to go across town/remove the hair insulation for the heatwave. The shaved head is back!
Seeing some more rainbow chat reminded me that I can expand on this now. Project coming soon w/
@EleanorFormby
to look at 'Institutional rainbowification before, during (and after?) COVID: a case study of HE'
If you think you do social justice work in universities & you aren't supporting the
#UCUStrikes
in whatever ways you can today, then you don't do social justice work
Today is the first official day of the rainbows project that I'm working on with
@EleanorFormby
! We're using higher education (HE) as a case study to think about the 'rainbowification' (ref:
@BeamMyrl
) of institutional environments in the UK 1/3
Moved house to find the garden has both flowering heather (which confused me a bit cos it's March, but still 😍) and a million solar powered animals with light up eyes
Funded PhDs advertised in my department - including two with me and
@EleanorFormby
- one on the experiences of LGBT disabled young people, and another on LGBT people's experiences of HE. Get in touch if you want more info!
As someone that's been at the end of those 'this is bullshit academia we shouldn't be funding' threads, I feel like we should be ignoring rather than engaging with & signal boosting them for the sake of the academics involved if nothing else
Michele Moore, the editor in chief of Disability and Society, has been prominent in a small group of people claiming to be 'gender critical' and publishing what many believe to be harmful to trans children in particular
