The foreshocks of the 2011 Japan Earthquake were on the same fault as the M9. These quakes in SoCal were not on the San Andreas. Not saying the "Big One" wont happen, but its a way bigger stretch than in the case of 2011 Japan.

Again, it's NOT impossible that additional stress was put on the San Andreas, but the possibility is very small. These quakes compared to the 2011 Japan tragedy are completely different cases. That being said, always good to be prepared for when the Big One inevitably does happen

One more tidbit of info, the fault systems are entirely different. The Tohoku fault that produced the 2011 Japan quake and tsunami is a megathrust system that ruptures every 60-70 years. The San Andreas is more of a strike-slip system. Still dangerous, but way different.

Another difference though between the two, as you probably are aware of, is the proximity of the two faults to populated areas. Even at a lower magnitude, the San Andreas Fault being extremely close to LA will cause quake damage close to 2011 in Japan, but no tsunami.

On 12/30/11, I was given game notes while at the NYR @ Florida game with friends, & after a very fun “call” from the stands, I decided it was what I wanted to do. 10 years, 250+ pro games later, here I am!
