Beyond heartbroken to hear that a great friend and former teammate of mine passed away yesterday. Javon was always cheering everybody on and making us laugh on rough days. He was one of the most genuine people I knew. You will be missed big time.

With conference tomorrow, I wanted to post my absolute favorite coaching memory so far in my career. Ending a 14 year conference drought for the track team with a special group of young men, many of whom are still on the team. Will forever be proud of this group!

Every now and then you get an athlete who truly demonstrates what it means to be a leader both on and off the track. Leo Chavez did just that and then some. I can’t wait to see how successful this young man becomes in life and I’ll miss seeing him at practice and meets next year!

I think track coaches can all benefit from narrowing down cues they will use with their athlete during pre-meet practices. Too many cues will cause your athlete to overthink, and you cannot fix everything during one meet. Keep it simple and focus on 1-3 things for that meet.

Hate hearing coaches put a kid down for "only benching 225 as a senior" when a year ago that kid had never been in a weight room. I celebrate any personal record a kid gets because to them, that may be the highlight of their week.

Even though I was a thrower, Coach Al had a way of making you feel like you were at the center of the room when you had a conversation with him. He is one of my many inspirations as a coach and even more so as a man.
