Seeing Taylor defend the vision of Jon as a pacifist Superman who doesn't raise a fist in the face of fascism, it has my blood boiling
Yes. A "true" Superman would fight back. Heck, I feel confident knowing that Clark, Kara, Kon, Kenan, Nat, John Henry, Paige, would fight back
Need a cool, political Superman run with a young, eager Superman in Training? Maybe one that explores the toxicity of state run Supers and Western imperialism and racism?
Boy have I got a book for you!
Since DC hasn't really shared anything regarding when this will be published on their Superman or main DC Comics account, I'll share this myself:
Superboy: The Man of Tomorrow will be released on September 28th.
This was the book that won a fan vote of 72%.
If Tim and Stephanie ever date again in the comics, it doesn't make him any less bisexual.
If Tim and Bernard continue dating, it doesn't make him any less bisexual.
If Tim is single for a while, he's still bi.
I feel compelled to say this, but in light on the David Aja stuff, and the lawsuit on the ownership and rights for Marvel's biggest characters (along with the older Superman lawsuit), I think it needs saying:
Pay the creators fairly. They are your lifeblood, comics publishers.
@JamesGunn
I get that you had a positive meeting with him, and he is a performer who isn't tied to any role, but to see him say that he was told by the studio to announce his return, and now he's out of a job, it leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Especially since Clark is a headlining role.
Some people are talking about the de-aging of Jon. I don't really care either way.
Let's talk about the de-aging of Conner Kent.
It sucks.
These are 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. Make it make sense.
Tim Drake is emblematic of his generation of heroes: DC barely knows what to do with all of them and squanders their potential. There's a reason you won't see an excellent opportunity for Bart to shine solo or a Cass Cain solo in recent years that uses her potential.
You're allowed to like both Tim Drake and Damian Wayne. They can coexist. The same is true of Kon and Jon.
Now, someone call DC Comics editors and writers and remind them of that fact - and give them all a fair amount of opportunity to shine.
Not that Diana getting a daughter precludes them, but like... let's keep reminding writers of each of these characters, and that they deserve time and space to breathe
Superboy sales are flagging below 100 for issue 2. My call to action, buy the fucking book. Reading it on the DC app is good for DC marketing purposes but does nothing to save the character
If Jon continues to be the focus of the Superman family office after this under Taylor's pen, count me out of buying books from that publisher. If he continues to the detriment of Kenan or Nat or Kon or Kara, I'm not just tapping out, I'm fully done
I can't stress this enough: the Superfam is currently repped by two men. Soon to be three men - because for that character to get any stories published, he needed to win a vote by a 72% margin - and DC editorial have decided to shelf one of their most prominent female characters.
The fact that Kara has so infrequently been written by women that I had to Google it, it's disheartening. The last time, it was a stone cold classic.
Mariko Tamaki's Being Super is excellent, and one of the few in Kara's 65 years where a woman wrote and another woman drew her.
Is it me, or does this panel acknowledge the elephant in the room? DC's editorial focus on Jon has hurt Conner (and Kenan and Kara and John Henry and ...). Jon isn't to blame, but the way DC plays favorites does a disservice to everyone else in his corner of the universe
Every time DC advertises an old Chuck Dixon book, I'm reminded that he compared Tim's coming out as bisexual to retconning a character as a cannibal and then I chuckle at how dumb that is
Under Dan DiDio's stewardship, DC cut down women in creative roles down to two people. One writer. One artist. That went from 12% (still not great) to 1% of creatives during his DC-wide New 52. From a purely pragmatic point of view, that's an unacceptable statistic
Between the upcoming Young Justice miniseries, Kon winning the Round Robin in twenty minutes in a landslide (72%), and so many people's excitement at the prospect of Conner coming out of the closet, maybe it's time DC realize they've got a hit character who needs more love.
If you want more than Batman at DC, you know what you need to do:
Buy the books when they out.
Spread the word.
Talk about the books you're passionate about.
Wanna see more than Superman(s) titles in the Superfam? show up for Kon's book and Steelworks! More Arrowfam? Show. Up.
The age up happened. It's here to stay.
But Jon getting this gigantic push while Kara is without an ongoing, Kenan doesn't exist, and Conner has to get enough votes for a story, that's bullshit.
Forgive my indifference to Jon until they (and more characters) get stories.
Bill Watterson (writer, artist and creator of Calvin and Hobbes) has a book coming out in October called The Mysteries in collaboration with John Kascht
I am furious. Lois is not a side character in Clark's adventures, Kara is not "Clark but girl," Natasha and Lana Lang and Cir-El deserve prominence and stories.
A writer could sneeze a Batman pitch on a used bar napkin and get another Bruce story, but women can't get shit.
I don't blame Visaggio (writer of the Conner Kent backup) for this, but I'm really confused about how frozen in age the Young Justice kids are while characters around them are growing. Dick's Titans and Jon's generation are afforded growth. They're locked in high school
Shelving Kara Zor-El / Supergirl after an Eisner Nominated miniseries is the height of stupidity and a clear indication that DC editorial doesn't know what they're doing!
@karazorlls
It is one of two things I'm not as big a fan of for this scene: why is Supes matching Barry for speed with seemingly no effort and why does he so easily take out Wonder Woman? I still like the movie ok enough but those things stand out
For the people who want to see Supergirl or Super-Man thrive in their own titles, you gotta show there's a clear want for characters with the S shield who don't go by Superman
That means buying Superboy and Steelworks in floppies
Superboy sales are flagging below 100 for issue 2. My call to action, buy the fucking book. Reading it on the DC app is good for DC marketing purposes but does nothing to save the character
We need to come out for the books. Not just Action and the two Superman titles, but Kon's mini, Steelworks, and any book they haven't announced yet (Kara, I see you and love you)
@AnneComics
When Kenan takes off his visor in issue two of New Super-Man to flirt with the intrepid reporter and his teammates sigh and call him an idiot
I'm excited to see Action Comics reckon with the Reign of the Supermen on Tuesday. Thirty years of John Henry Irons and Conner Kent is worth celebrating
It's time to contend directly with Kon's superhero moniker and move him on from "boy" (not "bro or lad"
Superman Day - not pictured, Lois (who rocks), John Henry and Natasha (who rock), Kenan (who rocks), Lana Lang (who rocks) and so many others.
Superman day is about the family
Nothing cooler than the knowledge that Woman of Tomorrow continues to garner accolades (Eisner nomination, now a Hugo nomination!) after a tepid response from higher ups who complained that "no one reads Supergirl"
I'm kinda excited about this, we should stop:
Superboy's sales improved between issue two and three. Steelworks is critically well loved. Let's keep the momentum going and buy those two books, and the August Action Comics Presents! More Super-books for more characters like Kenan
I appreciate if you're a fan, but part of me does not want Sn*der to return to filming DC movies. Some fans of his DC movies can be ridiculous to toxic to outright terrible. I hope he's happy, but I also hope he's happy away from fandoms I border so I can avoid the toxicity.
@GailSimone
I've worked in art galleries for years. 98% of the time, you're just working on budgets, grant and funding applications, and admin on upcoming projects. Maybe 2% fancy art parties. And almost all artists are humble and warm people
Tim has fared the best of his generation, but he's been misused or left adrift. Which leads to the impression that he's "the most shit on Robin" by DC when, really, it's more that DC doesn't know what to do with ALL of these characters and Tim is the de facto face of it.
@wordsandsense
These people won't be happy. If it's a new character, they'll complain about how it's forced. If it's an established character, it's an unnecessary retcon.
I'm thrilled Connor is ace!
But, like, Tim compared to, say, Stephanie or Duke, he's been fine. Tim compared to Conner or Cassie Sandsmark, wow Tim gets so so much content. But Tim has been without editorial direction for ages - I suspect that's changing now though.
My ideal Lois Lane is whip-smart and also willing to pull a Princess Leia and protect herself without a second thought
My Adventures with Superman is exactly that
The way New Super-Man reflects Action Comics, Detective Comics and DC Comics history is fascinating and complex, and incredibly nuanced. It really makes Kenan feel rooted in DC history, and integrates / contextualized Chinese people into the history of the DCU
Two of my favorite runs this year, Phillip Kennedy Johnson's Action Comics (the arc started last year in Action Comics 1030) and Tom King's Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, were especially remarkable for the artists chosen.
We should hope all runs have this kind of visual ambition
