I’ve been writing about the Get Back sessions for 10 yrs, approaching it w/same attitude we’ll see in

. I’m no filmmaker but am a writer/researcher & if you want to flesh it all - you should - visit for that & beyond. It’s well-regarded!
These guys usually had good ideas. But on January 30, 1969 - 55 years ago today - the Beatles, who tried so hard to devise a gimmick to end to their documentary, instead created something singularly iconic that needed no fabrication at all. Happy Rooftop Day! Context thread🧵⬇️
Today was a day. Never have I felt a better spiritual understanding of the Beatles, their songs and their story, and I’ve been listening to their music for almost 50 years. We started at Mendips, 251 Menlove Avenue. A wet day, we got a tan standing in the English rain.
Been saving this picture of a 40-something Paul McCartney skateboarding for a day we all could use a little bit of a lift. Assuming I'll retweet again.
OTD, July 20, 1969: A big day in the history of the Beatles' Let It Be film. At the same moment mankind made a giant leap on the moon, the stars of the film sat in place to screen a long working cut of the film. (1/3)
A lot to unpack with this one, and a lot going on. I guess if we had to have surviving Beatles “performing” with John & George, I’m glad it was “silly” John & George. But yeah, a lot going on here. Very nice we had the archival footage of ‘90s Now & Then rehearsals, tho.
The official music video for ‘Now And Then’ is live on YouTube directed by Peter Jackson.
He describes finding “a collection of unseen outtakes in the vault, where the Beatles are relaxed, funny and rather candid. We wove humour into some footage shot in
I’ll often tweet this picture to mark the anniversary of The Beatles' final tour date (55 years ago today: Aug. 29, 1966). Even if you ignore the creative need to dedicate themselves to the studio, could you blame them for not wanting to quit playing on stage?
OK, I gave it 24 hours since the 60 Minutes piece aired. Since no one else made a GIF of Mal Evans dancing (that I came across, at least), I went ahead and did it myself. Apply liberally.
Happy birthday, Paul McCartney! As I’m struck with what to write here, all I can think of is simply, what the hell would we have done without you all these years? Here’s to many more, Macca! 🎂
Memories, longer than the road that stretches out ahead. We walked more than 15 miles in London today - and could have gone longer. But I think we did well for ourselves to cap the TMBP UK 2024 tour and really understand the Beatles better. I’ll start today’s recap here 🧵
After spending the day at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, we made a special trip back through Liverpool before continuing. Here we are at 28 Hillside Road: We made it to Mal’s 🔨
Been saving this picture of a 40-something Paul McCartney skateboarding for a day we all could use a little bit of a lift. Assuming I'll retweet again.
That was pretty fab. Gonna have to listen again. First impression is that the strings really tied things together. The Beatles sounded like the Beatles. Harmony bits were lovely. Technology could be terrible, but it can also really be amazing.
#NowAndThen
I was grinning like an idiot watching this because it’s *exactly* what I think a documentary about these sessions should be - the drama (often comedic) of trying to stage a concert and all the obstacles they put in their own way. I’m incredibly excited

It's with extreme joy I can share Pt. 1 of a conversation -- a *three-hour* conversation-- with Get Back director Peter Jackson. We talked about bootlegs. We talked about day-by-day minutiae. He's one of us.
Thank you
@SATBshow
for letting me in to this unexpected party!
It's here - SATB 224A: The Making of Get Back part one

(It's of course actually 1974, not 1973. May is there, the meetup in '74 is well documented, etc. Interestingly, Paul spent March 28, *1973*, a day before this caption text, taking part in the recording of "Six O'Clock" for Ringo -- in the basement of 3 Savile Row.)
55 years ago today - February 7, 1969, just a week after the Beatles' Get Back sessions concluded, George Harrison broke up with his tonsils. This hospital photo was published in his 1980 memoir, I Me Mine.
A new, extensive tonsillectomy thread starts here ✂👅🧵⬇️
As we turn to ‘23, I can’t say enough how appreciative I am of everyone who’s read my work & research on the blog, listened to me guest on various podcasts & followed my ramblings on social media. This is a hell of a community. Can’t wait for what’s next. Cheers & happy new year!
Rereading bits of Hunter Davies’ Beatles biography, and I forgot how great Jim McCartney’s description of newborn Paul was. It took some time, but it all worked out 🥩😜👶🏻👨🏻
The Beatles on roof, let's get into it. This was about a quarter of the Let It Be film. You can see that portrayal on your VHS and Laserdiscs, as well as right here on Vimeo
Next stop was 20 Forthlin Road, and I simply can’t get over the fact that I stood in the McCartney front parlour (and that all of us in my family plunked at the replica piano and made music in that room).
I did the Masked Singer because I wanted to see if I could still do it
after I had survived Pancreatic Cancer. My life was saved by early screening and an op. Now I’m starting the Bright Side Fund to raise money to help save others. I have partnered with

53 years ago today, the Beatles' great divide isn't centered around the departed George, but instead John & Yoko. Plus the full story around the docuseries' gut-wrenching core.
Sad to read about Robbie Robertson, RIP. Others can give you better obits, but I can tell you that without the Band, we don't the late, Get Back-era Beatles as we know it. They were profoundly and openly influenced by the Band.
NEW POST! Jan 13, 1969 - The Lunchroom Tape (Pt 1): Get Back cleaned up the sound but muddied the facts in its portrayal of the Beatles' secretly recorded canteen conversation. Dig into who was really there, what was really said and why it matters 🌼🐞🎙️
Beatles people are the best people. Like the great Kevin Harrington! I’m blessed to have spent a couple hrs with Kevin on Saturday. A true charmer and wonderful storyteller. We talked everything from Beatles to cooking to family. Forever thanks to
@SATBshow
for hooking us up!
These guys were simply electric. Remember a few days back where they made fun of how they couldn't even stand when the played? On the roof, they couldn't stop moving.
Very easily one of my favorite moments in the entire production & something you'd never know listening to the Nagras only (as rewarding as that is, especially in other ways) comes when Ringo hangs up his kid's drawing by his drums. Bravo to Michael Lindsay-Hogg for capturing this
NEW POST: TMBP Extra - Stay till it's time to go
Initial thoughts on "Now and Then" and its place in Beatles history. I have a lot to say, so I'm subjecting you to it all in one place.
If ever there should be a holiday, it's today: OTD 67 yrs ago, John Lennon and Paul McCartney met, and the sun has shone a little brighter ever since. From deep in the archives, a little thing I wrote viewing July 6, 1957, through the lens of January 1969:
St. Peter’s Church in Woolton. The fête didn’t fail us way back when: Paul saw and met John. The hall’s door was open, so we got to see where Paul would have stood as he played Twenty Flight Rock to John.
I have to mention it's also the 55th anniversary of the Rutles' rooftop performance at the conclusion of the Let It Rot sessions. I couldn't track down any contemporary news coverage of the event
I wasn’t expecting my library hold of the Peter Brown book to arrive on release day, but they came through and saved me the money and effort of buying it. So away we go! 📖
Usually I watch Let It Be on Jan 2, but now with
#TheBeatlesGetBack
in our ears and in our eyes, I'll do what many of us are probably doing & watching the corresponding days in GB. I also hoping the bite-sized pieces is how I get my 9- and 11-year-olds to sit through all 8 hrs.
Trip continued this morning with a quick spin into the Cavern before hitting the road. I know it’s not the same space, but as an approximation, still incredible to see the kind of space the Beatles played. (The fire exit is the location of the original club’s entrance)
The church hall proudly displayed photos and information on the John-Paul meeting on bulletin boards in the same manner and wall space as it did contemporary children’s artwork
I missed this story yesterday, but definitely would guess this to be something involving the Star Club tapes, which PJ expressed excitement for when
@SATBshow
and myself spoke to him in November.
“I’m talking to The Beatles about another project, something very very different than ‘Get Back.’ We’re seeing what the possibilities are, but it’s another project with them. It’s not really a documentary…and that’s all I can really say”
We got the sad news today that Neil Innes ex-member of The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band has died. The Bonzos performed Death Cab For Cutie in Magical Mystery Tour. Neil also founded The Rutles, the brilliant parody band of the Beatles. Our thoughts go out to his family and friends.
I’ve said similar before & the sentiment remains: I’m endlessly appreciative for all who’ve read my work & research, listened to me guest on podcasts & followed my social media ramblings. Cheers to friendship & conversation in ‘23 and all that’s ahead in ‘24. Happy New Year! 🥂
The Walrus was him. Quarryman. Founding member of Wings. Founding member of the Beatles. Birthday boy.
Thank you, Paul, I hope the love you take is equal to the love you’ve made (2/2) 🎂
#HappyBirthdayPaulMcCartney
@PaulMcCartney
It's not always easy to tell if a visual matches the audio moment in Get Back, but I really do hope Mal poured George a glass of wine during the master take of "Don't Let Me Down"
It’s a day for Let It Be ‘24, but also let’s wish happy 54th to the LP, 1st released May 8, 1970 (in UK). A soulful, spirited & emotional compilation, imperfectly perfect. Read about, perpetually, at .
Last site before I go home: Heathrow, where the Beatles left (and arrived) on so many flights, spreading their words & music across the globe.
The last 2 weeks were simply outstanding. I can’t wait to return.
Great Britain, you are tremendous, and nobody knows like me! 🇬🇧 ✈️
Now and Then, sooner than later? From Daily Beatle Facebook page, screengrabs of Beatles website showing John Lennon birthday (Oct 9) release. Consistent date with other reissues in recent years.
Meanwhile, Glyn Johns walks into Apple holding loose Beatles reels, no box, eyeing his surroundings. Feels like a scene straight out of a first draft of Give My Regards to Broad Street.
This almost feels like a stupid question, but has everyone seen Anthology? I imagine you can’t just go to a store and buy it on DVD anymore. It’s not streaming anywhere, and it’s 2021, etc.
I’m more than 3,000 words into something on “Now and Then” - I bet I can get to 4K. Writing on and off on since Friday. This is more to get these ideas out of my head and onto a page than anything. I quote Derek Taylor, mention Magic Alex, evoke the Wilburys. Typical TMBP fare 📝
This was the scene at Candlestick Park during the Beatles' final tour date, 57 years ago today. And as I ask every Aug. 29 when I post this: Could you blame them for not wanting to play on stage before an audience anymore?
Short thread below🧵
OK, catching up here with my trip to the new Get Back exhibit at the Rock Hall earlier today. An outtake of All Things Must Pass blared on the loudspeakers outside the museum. Hey, that’s my entrance music!
Annual Aug. 29 tweet: This was the scene at Candlestick Park during the Beatles' final tour date, 56 years ago today. I'll repeat myself and ask, could you blame them for not wanting to play on stage before an audience anymore?
And then Penny Freaking Lane - the roundabout, the barbershop, the (former) bank.
@Liddypooldave
’s incredible stories and explanations of the area and song’s characters floored us
What exactly happened when the Beatles - and, notably, several others - went to Ringo's house for a board meeting Jan. 12, 1969, two days after George left the group? The Get Back doc just said "The meeting does not go well."
Here's how it all went down:
We ducked over to Matthew Street briefly, for a quick peek at the Cavern and a few nearby locations. These pictures are from yesterday when we were down there (and it wasn’t raining). That corner of the Cavern display is where Mal would work the door.
Of all the things in Beatles lore, the roof really has been one of the few things that never changed in their narrative. The rest of the sessions, sure. Never bashed, never misrepresented or downplayed. The rooftop was always lionized. And deservedly!
That left only a drive to the Dingle to complete our collection w/Ringo’s homes. After a drive-by of 9 Madryn St we got out to see 10 Admiral Grove, including a peek in the window (wrong setting, it’s out of focus). House is currently undergoing some renovations by private owner
