The singular, most influential teammate that I learned the game of baseball from. His interview side comments were gold nuggets. He saw the game so simply and explained the mental game w/ amazing clarity.

Before Maddux became a HOF’er, he was rookie with a 6-14 record and a 5.61 ERA. He hired a mental skills coach. He learned how to be present. He reduced & simplified. He learned how to fully focus on and commit to the only thing that matters, the execution of one pitch at a time.

This trend is normalizing due to two factors.
1. Accelerated MLB debuts.
2. Slower player development.
Talent and applied metrics have pushed young players to meteoric levels, albeit rarely sustainable long-term. Thus, in-game adaptation and learning suffer. Players peak later.

The game of baseball is a math equation. Playing the game well is an art.
