#DYK Wallace’s life would inspire some of Scotland’s most famous writers such as Robert Burns and Walter Scott. For years ‘The Wallace’ was in fact one of the most popular books in Scotland, its presence in Scottish homes at one time rivalling the Bible and the work of Burns.

#DYK Around 150 years after Wallace’s execution, a minstrel named Blind Harry was writing what he claimed to be his life story. The epic poem ‘The Wallace’ was written in the 1470s. Although it does contain some facts, it is generally considered a work of historical fiction.

#DYK After Wallace’s execution his head was dipped in tar and placed on a pike on London Bridge. His four limbs were sent to be displayed in Newcastle, Berwick, Stirling, and Perth. He never received a proper Christian burial.
