April 1977 through February 2002 … done. Why am I scanning this archive? We had our annual Scene reunion today. These folks and so many more put their lives away from the track on hold to produce the best paper possible. And, by God, that work deserves to be preserved.

This doesn’t quite reach LW Wright levels of detective work, but it’s dang close. Former NASCAR official John Darby claimed pictures of him from his rock-and-roll drumming days were lost in some long ago fire. So … I called his momma.

There are moves afoot @TeamHendrick at the end of the 2001 season, including @chadknaus being named as @JimmieJohnson’s Winston Cup crew chief. The story is buried on page 67 of the 12/13/01 issue of Winston Cup Scene. 23 years later, they went into @NASCARHall together.

Bowman Gray @BGSRacing is a part of Gray Garrison’s DNA. His grandfather and Bill France Sr were friends and business partners. I’ve yet to hear Gray’s name mentioned in coverage of @nascarclash and that’s just the way he’d want it. It’s all about the racing.

April 1977 through 9/13/2001 … done. That last issue was put to bed on Monday, September 10. As bad as 2000 and 2001 had been to that point, it got much, much worse the next day.

Late summer 2001 … sixteen-year-old @KyleBusch plans to make his @NASCAR_Trucks debut. Can’t help but think back to those days as @brextonbusch makes his way up the racing ladder.
