BREAKING: Employees at the Little, Brown imprint of Hachette Book Group have staged a walk-out in protest of the company’s acquisition of Woody Allen's forthcoming memoir. This story is developing.
LIFE UPDATE: I no longer work at Hachette Book Group. They reorged Hachette Books / Hachette Go and I was one of many let go, and I am OK!

A lot can happen in 8 years. September 26, 2016, I walked into HBG for the first time.
I’m going to reconnect with some of the parts of me that there wasn’t space for between midnight edits, early morning PR triage, and email after email after email. And I'm pretty fucking excited about it.
Also thank you to Andy Wang for the photoshoot 🙏
I’m going to see what I want outside of work. I’m going to rest. I’m going to do the revisions on my novel that those agents asked for, oh, 6 years ago.
One of the books I edited changed my life: All the Gold Stars: Reimagining Ambition and the Ways We Strive. Folks, the call was coming from inside the house.
Actually, because this industry eats itself like no other, I walked into the old Perseus building on West 57th Street and began life as a temporary marketing/publicity/editorial assistant 4 hours a day, 5 days a week, $15 an hour. (We will always be about

@rgay
First time this happened I was full-on, open-mouth screaming while drowning it in Raid. Therefore inhaled Raid. Nose was burning all night. Rookie mistake. Bug was dead but so was the lining of my lungs.
I’ve spent 8 years working more than not. Published something like 135 books. But best of all, I got to know the beating lifeblood people of HBG. It's bumpy over there right now. Try to be kind to them.
So, to quote a certain lady in waiting, whatever next?
Thank you to those who emailed me after Focus presentations to say, “This autism memoir spurred me to get a diagnosis,” or “This reproductive freedom book gave me actions to take after Roe fell,” and more.
Thank you to my team for saying yes to me, over and over again – and to the Art team for saying no, you have too many books with red covers, please pick another color… because they were absolutely right.
This is the COVID vax you want. More closely matched to current variants than Moderna & Pfizer, likely longer protection due to using protein like the flu shot, and fewer side effects. You may need to call a few pharms to find, since it was approved later. But worth it!
Novavax has received Emergency Use Authorization from the U.S.

for its updated COVID-19 vaccine in individuals aged 12 and older. Pre-filled syringes are expected to be available in thousands of locations across the U.S. in the coming days.

After 4 months and 40 applications, I was finally in publishing. And, I had my own office with a door that closed! (I will never be over it.)
My imprint was 2-1/2 people including me, and I knew I needed to make connections fast.

I had TEMP after my name and was contracted for just 6 months. But good people are sticky, and I wanted to stick around.
The next 18 months saw us move into 1290 6th Avenue, and with that I met the disaster-defying production crew in Boulder,
Whether we served champagne and branded totes, a dishy royal tell-all from a lady in waiting, or a music memoir that rocked all the way out, HBG said yes. They said more, please. Thank you for joining us on this ride; for having fun with us.
Those 18 months also saw the dissolution of my 2-1/2 person imprint and move to a scrappy team no older than my career, really. They had bold voices and big dreams and even bigger hearts.
I’m talking about Hachette Books and Hachette Go.
the Boston folks with the longest memories, and of course, the brilliant New York sales team, front desk and admin services, IT, finance, and staff across imprints who never told me I had too many questions or was taking up too much space.
(A few said that, but didn't last.)

Day in the publishing life: up at 5:45am to witness Lady Anne Glenconner on CBS Mornings for her new book WHATEVER NEXT?, offered on a dream project, and while prepping a manuscript for production just said aloud, "God, this bibliography is BEAUTIFUL." 10/10!

In all this, it's kind of crazy to me but also really fun to let y'all know that I have my FIRST New York Times bestseller!! LADY IN WAITING by Anne Glenconner is a great read: Crown-esque drama and heart. Anne was portrayed in the final ep of The Crown this season...
Face out, 4 copies deep at Barnes & Noble Union Square. Two years after publication, Controlling Women is more relevant than ever as we fight for abortion rights and reproductive freedom. I am so proud to have edited this book

It's a weird fucking Friday when you have to change the online copy on a book from "When Roe is toppled" to "With Roe overturned." If I truly knew what to say, I would be the author rather than the editor. I'm really angry, mostly. What I'll say is: I'm recommitting to helping.🧵

Ever had a book glow? Sally Adee's WE ARE ELECTRIC blew my mind: our body runs on an electrical system that determines how we form in-utero, can detect the negative charge of cancer cells, and in early experiments, could potentially regrow limbs. Out Feb 2023.
Can't say enough about what a joy it's been to edit Rainesford's book. I hope you'll read it - I hope you'll preorder! - and let it change you the way it changed me.
ALL THE GOLD STARS finished copies have arrived! ⭐️ It lands in bookstores 6/6, but it's available for preorder now, wherever you get books. The cats, Fig Newton and Harry, are enthused!

Why did god make cutting up a mango a biblical trial. I am Jacob wrestling with the angel. Or perhaps I am the angel, because with how my arms are shaking, the mango really might win.
