Mexico's opposition alliance is dead, and its parties are discredited. Where next for opposition politics in Mexico? We explore the state of things with

Seven of Sheinbaum’s cabinet picks currently hold positions in Amlo’s govt. Three will hold the same position. Historic amount of continuity between different presidents’ cabinets.
Siete secretarías del próximo gobierno serán encabezadas por personas que han sido parte del gabinete actual, tres de ellas tendrán al mismo titular. Eso es algo nunca se había visto en la actual era constitucional.

Mexico doesn’t owe AMLO (or any other politician) “departure presents.” The gift Mexico gave AMLO was being allowed to serve in the first place. That senior Morena figures don’t understand this is precisely the danger of all this.
@ElParece
Not sure many people understand he already tried during his 1st term but was thwarted by the "adults" in the room. This really isn't talk, and there won't be any such adults around next time.
Mexico's upcoming regulator bonfire poses real risks for the incoming Sheinbaum administration. Eventually, it could undermine AMLO's legacy with his own supporters.

All the ingredients of a serious economic crisis are there and brewing. It’s not helped that Biden admin has treated AMLO w kid gloves for 4 years. But Morena’s arrogance toward their int’l partners mixed with truly terrible policy decisions are going to bite them.

Sheinbaum faces a bitter “day after the night before.” This reform, pushed through with gangster-like tactics which undermine her feminist & leftist credentials, could unravel her presidency. More on last night’s vote:

Mayors are targets in Mexico. But Alejandro Arcos is 1st state capital mayor to be murdered since the 90s. His murder came during the same week Sheinbaum unveiled her govt's security strategy & pushed on w/ AMLO's judicial reforms. Arcos' killing signals perils ahead for both.
@ElParece
This is crucial. No clue if AMLO was in anyone’s pocket or not, but the reality around García Luna has to be understood here if you’re interested in having a rounded view of informants’ potential motivations and the political dynamics in play at the time.
Gerardo Noroña is in as Senate President. A not wholly surprising choice given his closeness to Sheinbaum, but one which is unlikely to calm the nerves of Mexico’s jittery partners.
Lopez Obrador's statement this am that he is "pausing" (diplomatic practice is being coined and reinvented as we speak in Mexico!) relations with the US and Canadian embassies in Mexico City is red meat for his base. A more serious prospect that the Biden Administration - and the

From a UK perspective, Morena has entered the same sort of up is down, black is white universe that the Tories entered after the Brexit vote. They have committed to a fundamentally incoherent and economically illiterate idea of the world, in service of a charismatic demagogue &
AMLO's judicial reform win is a Pyrrhic victory. It sets Mexico on a slow, painful drift out of the North American club of democracies. Sheinbaum will spend her term picking up the pieces, but they may not fit together again. Our take on yesterday's events
Pemex registra 60% de la deuda de petroleras en América Latina: Fitch

Mexico president AMLO is insisting on non-intervention in Venezuela. Not sure how that squares with harrassing, detaining and deporting Venezuelan refugees in Mexico as per its agreement with the US. Especially as there will now likely be many more seeking refuge/to get to the US
ICYMI: The upcoming regulatory bonfire in Mexico is unnecessary and counter-productive. It will become an albatross for the incoming Sheinbaum administration. More from us here:

Like AMLO, Claudia Sheinbaum is set to reject the world stage, which will further undermine Mexico's global position. Mexico’s int'l partners should stop waiting for Sheinbaum to emerge as a pragmatic reformer. She very likely won't.

Once you embrace a politics based around fantasy, without any guardrails, as the UK did, things start to go very badly, very quickly. He doesn’t understand it, but the institutions AMLO hates so much are precisely what has kept his project from going totally off the rails & thus

AMLO is channelling the impossible Brexit logic of Britain's Boris Johnson. Boris' party learned the hard way that a tug-of-war with reality only ends one way in politics:
Three former PRI leaders have brought a formal challenge against Alito Moreno’s internal party power grab. On Tuesday we wrote about what Moreno’s continued leadership means for Mexico’s opposition.

AMLO has proposed “faceless judges” as a means of tackling organised crime. He did this standing in front of a chart which quite literally broadcast the names and locations of judges overseeing organised crime cases. 👇🏼
