Ship setting on Gotland, Sweden, that measures 18 x 5 meters (59 x 16 feet). The legend says that it is the grave of Tjelvar - the first Gute, the first man to arrive to the island of Gotland. Burned bones were found in it, so there may be some truth to it.

This is an old Julbock-mask (Yule Goat mask). The Julbock tradition here in Sweden is very old, and is believed to be connected to the goats of Thor. It was actually the Julbock who delivered the Yule Gifts here before Tomten (our, older version of Santa Claus) made an entry.

This runestone from c. 1020-1050 AD disappeared in the 1600s and was discovered again a couple years ago during roadwork. Now it has been restored and raised again for all to see. The runes read "Ingulfส and Viseti raised this stone after Bugga and Sigstein. God help their souls"

When Robin Lucas at the Museum of Uppland Sweden updated the records of the runestones in Uppland, he found his favourite (U744). It's dated to the mid 1000s and is located in the park of Ekolsund castle. Most runestones were raised by men, but this one was raised by a woman.

It is an accurate reconstruction of the ร
rby Boat in which a woman, a horse and a dog were buried around the 850s.
The boat is wholly built with Viking Age tools and methods as the master thesis by a boat building school here in Sweden.

Sweden has thousands of runestones. This is one of the more unusual. The Krogsta stone (U1125) has a peculiar motif and Elder Futhark runes, which is very rare. The runes and the Proto-Norse language used date the stone to the pre-Viking Age between the year 550 and the late 700s

These Thorโs Hammer amulets have been reproduced literally thousands of times. The ones seen here are the actual finds - and there is only one of each. They can be seen at the Swedish History museum, where the worldโs largest collection of Viking Age artefacts is located.

One theory of where the word Viking comes from is that it is derived from the Old Norse word โvikaโ - the distance for each shift of rowers. Viking would thus mean a โrower who works in shiftsโ, which is basically what they did - regardless of if they raided, traded or colonized.

A bronze Roman cavalry mask of Alexander the Great from the 2nd Century AD. They were used in Roman cavalry tournaments. Only 40 masks have been found in the world and this is the only one found in Sweden, in the foundation of a Viking Age house on the island Gotland.

Weโd like to share with you the famous Gjermundbu Viking helmet. It is one of the handful Viking Age helmets found capable of reconstruction. Two others were found on Gotland, Sweden and one in Kiev. Found in 9 fragments in 1943 in Norway, it was subsequently restored.
