SRT Governor Inspects Lat Krabang ICD and Laem Chabang Port, Aiming to Increase Freight Train Services to 30 Trips Per Day On February 11, 2025, Veeris Ammarapala, Governor of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT), led an inspection of the Lat Krabang Inland Container Depot (ICD) and Laem Chabang Port, accompanied by Awirut Thongnet, Deputy Governor of SRT. Their visit focused on evaluating the current logistics operations and identifying solutions to improve rail freight efficiency, particularly in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). At Lat Krabang ICD, Governor Veeris reviewed traffic conditions and road maintenance issues at the depot’s entrance before proceeding to Laem Chabang Port. There, he assessed freight train operations at the Single Rail Transfer Operator (SRTO) facility and discussed logistical challenges with key stakeholders. Veeris emphasized that the SRT aims to enhance rail freight efficiency along the critical Bangkok–Laem Chabang route, which serves as a major logistics hub for Thailand’s imports and exports. Expanding freight train operations will not only meet growing business demands but also help reduce transportation costs between Bangkok and Laem Chabang. Additionally, this initiative supports the government’s goal of alleviating congestion at Bangkok Port (Klong Toey), promoting environmental sustainability, and improving energy efficiency in line with Thailand’s national trade and investment strategy. Currently, 24 freight train trips (round-trip) operate daily between Lat Krabang ICD and Laem Chabang Port, with 8,622 freight trains transporting a total of 465,329 TEUs in fiscal year 2024. However, delays at SRTO, particularly in container handling and bogie turnaround, remain an issue. To address this, the SRT is working closely with relevant agencies to streamline operations and increase daily freight train services to 30 round trips. 📌 Lat Krabang ICD: A Key Logistics Hub Lat Krabang ICD was established following a Cabinet resolution in 1991, authorizing land expropriation for its development. The facility was completed on October 25, 1994, and began operations on April 9, 1996, to facilitate containerized cargo transport for importers and exporters. Covering over 645 rai (103 hectares), the ICD includes 380 rai (60 hectares) under concession and 265 rai (42 hectares) as common-use areas. It is designed to handle up to 600,000 TEUs per year. “Rail freight transport continues to expand due to its cost-effectiveness, energy efficiency, and safety. It aligns with the government’s strategy to integrate rail and maritime logistics seamlessly, ensuring sustainable economic growth,” Veeris stated. Via @PR_SRT

@DashellRFittry @RichardBarrow They are all night trains. Not really fun in 3rd Class. But Rapid No. 167 does have a sleeper carriage with open windows! I love it. Just don’t go during the rainy season.

@Ajarncom @DashellRFittry @RichardBarrow You can actually book six months in advance if you add a couple of stops so your destination is Map Ammarit. It will cost you an extra 20 baht to do this workaround 🤣.

@neil_sd_ The observation car does have side tables as do each of the carriages. As for wine, they are working on allowing alcohol to be officially served on chartered trains (though unofficially….).

Station stamp collected for Chiang Mai. I’m returning to Bangkok on Express No. 52 sleeper train at 3:30pm. Arrival time of 5:10am is not great as they wake you one hour in advance to collect bedding. But I need to go straight to work from the station and this is the best train.
