The Pirates movies have thousands of CG shots, even for minor stuff like adjusting camera angles. The reason Eternals looks bad is because most current directors barely engage with their VFX teams until AFTER they’ve shot the footage, so everything just looks pasted on top.

In a funny way, this is a great example of why Disney can't make the Muppets work and how franchising kills concepts in general. The Muppets didn't used to be just a single set group of characters who always said/did things a certain way. Now they are. See also; Looney Tunes.

Ironically, this is exactly the kind of attitude that produces blockbusters with terrible VFX. Verbinski loves the tech so much he spent years learning every single fine detail of it and shot hours of test footage to make sure it looked just right. All before shooting.

Also, CGI is not cheaper than practical effects. That’s why Hollywood is so desperate that they don’t unionize. Movies are so green screen/CG heavy now because it makes it easier for the studio to replace stuff in post. Which isn’t a good thing, but it’s a different issue.

@Douggernaut_2 If a beautiful WASP in her 20s with actual anime eyes still can't appeal to the 4Chan demographic, then what are they even doing at this point? lol

I love Michael Mann's movies more than I love most of my friends and family but literally what about this is shocking? 90% of all Michael Mann anecdotes are the people who worked under him talking about what a needlessly cruel spiteful dick he is. lol

Born Again! Marvel has let go of writers and directors of its #Daredevil show after being less than enthused by what had been shot so far. (The hero doesn’t even show up in costume until the episode 4!) The show will now undergo a creative reboot:

This is why we don’t have a sustainable film industry anymore. Studios have trained audiences to focus on the 6 most insanely expensive IP projects they release every year and everything else is disposable. And once you squeeze those IPs dry, what do you have left to sell?

John Landis is so fascinating to me because he's clearly a massive cinephile/has stunt cast multiple directors and cinematographers and yet his movies still look like... that

The creative whiplash in lighting and cinematography between Beverly Hills Cop II and III is insane. Part 3 looks like an episode of Saved by the Bell.

@GentleDoofus No worries, if I had some of the replies your post had, I'd take an equally jaundiced view.

Amazing how this kind of tedious studio executive mindset has not only filtered into the popular consciousness- but also totally become the dominant mode of interacting with a movie for the audiences Hollywood has been increasingly trying to court for the past two decades.

@Jacob_deNobel @Srirachachau Also, this movie was entirely shot on location in Rhode Island, which suggests a level of tax credit fraud so byzantine, the mind can scarcely comprehend it.

Sadly, I think that Hollywood has nearly killed the Golden Goose. As with news sites pivoting to video in the 2010s, the pivot to streaming basically threw out long-fought-for systems of earning money while also teaching the consumer to expect more for less.

Fuck, this is depressing. Has the art house theatrical audience died for good? Do they just need more time, safety, and persuasion to come back to theaters? Or would they rather just stay home and binge an 8 episode true crime show on Netflix?

I've always been amazed that even one of the Netflix shows I had a soft spot for, made it to a Season 3. Until I realized it was 99% because they did the dick streaming thing of splitting one season into two. See, even when they do a good thing it's still secretly shitty.

@catholicdad420 It’s the exact same thing with the discourse around those shitty MCU movies. It’s not a fucking CIA propaganda op, it doesn’t need to be. They’re pro US military because almost every single aspect of mainstream US culture is.

Legacy sequels are trapped by their inherent fanboyism. Their characters can't change/grow that much, but also they have to taken way more seriously than they ever were in their original movies. Thus you have to legit explain their arrested development.

@FredRichardz Like, if you did a Ghostbusters 3 that was truly in the spirit of the original, the movie wouldn't have to dwell on these guys being fuckups because they always were and that was part of the fun. But because now they are "important" and "serious" characters, you do.

I do think that if one wants to make a case for Britain having a consistently great area of filmmaking it would probably be the cheapo genre stuff and basically none of the historical/kitchen sink dramas that are its main focus.
