Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship has reached a decisive moment as heads of state and government gather in Addis Ababa to vote. Months of intense diplomacy, led by President William Ruto and Raila’s campaign team, have positioned him as a strong contender. With 28 endorsements already secured, Raila needs a two-thirds majority to win in the first round. A victory would not only elevate Kenya’s influence in continental affairs but also reshape the country’s political landscape, potentially redefining alliances and succession politics ahead of 2027.

The government is planning to hire 3,000 youths to support the cleanup of Nairobi, Mathare and Ngong rivers. The initiative aims to restore riparian land, remove waste, rehabilitate degraded riverbanks and plant trees along waterways. Speaking at the EAC-SADC Joint Summit in Dar es Salaam, he emphasized that military interventions cannot resolve the crisis and called for a unified regional approach. The president has urged respect for DRC’s sovereignty and greater international support to protect civilians and restore stability.

The EAC-SADC Joint Ministerial Meeting in Dar es Salaam, co-chaired by He @MusaliaMudavadi and HE Amon Murirwa, has addressed the security crisis in eastern DRC. Key resolutions include an immediate ceasefire, reopening Goma Airport, securing humanitarian access, and repatriating the deceased and injured. Confidence-building measures, dialogue with armed groups and respect for DRC’s territorial integrity were emphasized. A joint EAC-SADC Chiefs of Defence meeting will convene within five days, with long-term plans for political dialogue and withdrawal of foreign forces.
