Barry Trotz has not lost a first-round playoff series since 2010, winning 2 in Nashville, 4 in Washington and now 3 on Long Island. Seven straight seasons since 2015 as well.
It goes without saying that the Capitals don’t win in 2018 without TJ Oshie, and even though he had an informal goodbye after Game 4, the chances he comes back are dwindling fast. If this is it, he had a hell of a ride.
Sadly for Backstrom, there probably won't be an official retirement announcement for a while, since that contains cap implications. In-season much more tricky to do, so will be in limbo for a while. But a quiet end for one of the best centers in Capitals history.
Backstrom has played through a lot of pain the last few seasons, but he clearly isn't where he wants to be, and that may be it for another Young Gun - just one left.
Capitals at $93.48M after the trade, Roy would add another $5.75M, so $99.23M, or about $11.23M over the cap, so it’s pretty safe to say they don’t expect Oshie to be back.
In the Ovechkin era, Washington is 6-1 overall in Game 6s when facing elimination, winning 2008 in Philly, 2009 at NYR and PIT, 2012 vs. NYR, 2017 at PIT and 2018 vs. TB, and losing 2016 at PIT. 2-0 at home in that situation since 2008.
If the Redskins indeed change their name tomorrow, the only Washington Big Four team to retain their original name since the franchise’s founding will be the Capitals.
Hearing Evgeny Kuznetsov will be placed on unconditional waivers today for purposes of a mutual contract termination.
Both

and
#Caps
are now free of Kuznetsov's cap hit and contract. He is walking away from final $6 million owed in salary this season to return to Russia.
John Tavares misses the playoffs in 2018 and the Leafs get bounced in the first round. Tavares leaves, Islanders get to the second round and Leafs get bounced in the first round.
FWIW, I think Ovechkin will sign after the expansion draft, allowing them to protect an additional player. Did the same with TJ Oshie before the Vegas draft.
Regardless of tonight's result, the Capitals have positioned themselves for a better future with the salary cap moves this season, and could elevate themselves back into true contender status with wise spending this summer. Playing 82 meaningful games is an unexpected by-product.
Whatever chance in the series the Capitals have against the Rangers begins and ends with Charlie Lindgren. He's posted a .955 save percentage and a 1.35 GAA this season against New York, including a shutout.
In the Ovechkin era, the Capitals are statistically just as likely to advance down 0-2 as up 2-0, as Washington is 2-2 in series where they fell back 0-2, and 3-3 in series where they took a 2-0 series lead.
So, Capitals send out their backup goalie who was seemingly a bad fit, a depth puck rusher, and then adds a trio of forwards, a pair of defensemen and a backup goalie. Safe to say they probably won’t be on the playoff bubble next season if things go well.
A reminder that Ovechkin is a pending UFA, meaning if Seattle selects him, they’d only get his rights for a few days before hitting the market. Him not signing gave Capitals a chance to protect Sprong.
Six years ago this evening, the Capitals captured the franchise’s first Stanley Cup with a win in Vegas. Just four players from that contest finished the 2023-24 season playing with the team (Carlson, Oshie, Ovechkin and Wilson), with Backstrom on roster but unlikely to return.
Also, if Kuznetsov has played his last game as a Cap, Washington is down to Carlson, Oshie, Ovechkin and Wilson left from Game 5 in Vegas in 2018, with Backstrom also presumably not returning.
Obviously Backstrom has been one of the most underrated players in Capitals history, content to be in Ovechkin’s shadow yet one of the most valuable players. So will be interesting if this is the end for him in the NHL, or tries to try another procedure.
Somehow the Quebec Nordiques are playing the Las Vegas Thunder on the 18th green on a golf course by a lake in Nevada at night because the sun was too strong and this is normal.
The Lightning have lost their last 5 chances to advance to the Stanley Cup Final, dropping Game 6 and 7 to the Penguins in 2016, Game 6 and 7 to the Capitals in 2018, and now Game 5 to the Islanders in 2020. They try to advance for the first time since 2015 tonight.
Craziest thing you could see in Tuesday’s Washington-Philadelphia games is the Flyers pulling their goalie late in regulation in a tie game, because an OT win still eliminates them.
Tonight is John Carlson's 1,000th NHL game, as well as likely the last we'll see of the team's blue third jersey. The Capitals are rumored to be using a special 50th anniversary sweater next season.
Capitals weren’t terrible in Game 1 but some weird breaks really killed any chance of a win. Also not generating a whole lot of offense which is a problem when you give up 4.
Every Capitals coach hired since 1981 who didn’t win a playoff series in their first two seasons didn’t get to coach into a third except for Glen Hanlon (who was in a rebuild.)
Also, here is the first ever Capitals goal scored in an HTS broadcast, scored by
@Laughlin18
38 years ago tonight. He returned in 1990 to work as color commentator. Washington went on to win that game 4-2 and earn the franchise’s first-ever playoff series in a three-game sweep.
Big picture for the Capitals is a lot brighter than 12 months ago. With some smart moves they can move back into more of a true Cup threat rather than a playoff participant. Will be an interesting season with cap room they haven’t had in years. But with holes to fix.
