25 years ago I resigned from my job as an area manager with a brewery as my 1st book had just been published and I thought I’d much prefer to spend my life walking the Dales. 25 years later, I’ve written 17 guidebooks, walked 25,000 miles & taken 14,000 people out on the hills.
“We cannot adapt our way out of the climate crisis,” Katharine Hayhoe, chief scientist for the Nature Conservancy, told the Observer. “If we continue with business-as-usual greenhouse gas emissions, there is no adaptation that is possible. You just can’t.”
27 years ago I resigned from my job as an area manager with a brewery as my 1st book - The Inn Way to the Yorkshire Dales - had just been published.
27 years later, I’m still walking the hills. I’ve also written 17 guidebooks, walked 29,000 miles & taken 17,605 people outdoors.
Happy Vernal Equinox!
Today is the day when…
* the sun crosses above Earth’s equator, moving from south to north.
* day & night are equal length.
* the sun rises directly in the east and sets in the west. The equinoxes are the only two times of the year when this happens.
Wow! What a light display above the Yorkshire Dales this evening.
The Aurora Borealis is currently lighting up the sky with pinks and greens above Wharfedale.
The first time I’ve seen the Northern Lights, and what a spectacular sight.

26 years ago I resigned from my job as an area manager with a brewery as my first book had just been published (The Inn Way) and I thought I’d much prefer to spend the rest of my life walking the hills and fells of the Yorkshire Dales.

Day 2 of our Boots and Beer Walking Weekend based at Keswick.
Sunday’s route was a 10 mile walk up onto the classic Lakeland fell of Cat Bells. This is often cited as a good walk for families but beware, it’s actually a tough climb with some scrambling up eroded rocky steps
Day 4 of our Coast to Coast.
9 miles from Grasmere to Patterdale. An early start to avoid Storm Agnes meant we were in Patterdale having cream teas by 1.30pm.
Bit of a ‘rest’ day today with the ‘up and over’ to Patterdale via Grizedale Hause and Tarn.
A wonderful walk from Whitby to Robin Hood’s Bay today along the clifftop path with my daughter. After weeks of rainy days, today was beautiful with stunning light.
I love wandering the narrow lanes around RHB, there’s such a sense of adventure, excitement and smugglers! 🏴☠️
Well, it was meant to be the Fairfield Horseshoe today but the forecast had 65mph winds on the summit so I opted for a lower route around Grasmere
A beautiful, breezy autumnal day. Our route took us from Ambleside to Rydal Hall, Alcock Tarn, Grasmere, Dow Bank & Loughrigg Fell.
Day 1 of our Coast to Coast.
A wet & windy 15 miles from St Bees to Ennerdale Bridge.
A lovely group of people from the UK, Australia &USA.
Got to Ennerdale Brudge in good time and now relaxing at the Shepherds Arms.
Into Lakeland tomorrow…
I teach hundreds of people Navigation Skills each year, and sometimes people ask me “what apps do you use to navigate?” My answer: the “M-Ap”, otherwise known as an

MAP! There is still nothing better than a map and compass - there’s no skill in pressing a button!
Day 12 of our Coast to Coast. 20 miles across the North York Moors from Osmotherley to Lion Inn at Blakey.
9 hours of drizzle, mist & wind couldn’t dampen our spirits - we had a superb day on the hills. A bath and a cup of tea has never felt so good!
Oh, what a night!
A wonderful sunset walk up Helvellyn last night with 12 people, working with fellow ML Sharon Kennedy
Beautiful light and a stunning sunset.
Fancy six days walking in the Yorkshire Dales?
21 -26 April 2024
The Inn Way to the Yorkshire Dales is a 6 day walk, covering 76 miles via 26 pubs. Oh, it also traverses 11 dales, plus castles, waterfalls, lead mines, Roman roads, limestone crags…
Up on Crinkle Crags & Bow Fell today, with a descent down the Great Slab then along the Climbers’ Traverse. Thick mist on Crinkle Crags with 50m visibility plus gusty winds added to the experience - I had to get my compass out & do a bit of pacing!
3 days exploring the mountains and glens of the Arrochar Alps in the Scottish Highlands, including Ben Arthur (The Cobbler) and Beinn Ime.
3 days of warm, sunny weather and two beautiful wild camps.
