(🧵) 15TH PLACE WORLDS 2024.As heartbreaking as it was to lose back to back win and ins to top 8, I am so proud of this finish and my deck. A lot of thought went into constructing this list and I wouldn’t change a card; absolutely everything served its purpose.

In a vacuum, this is true. But the problem with Dusknoir (and most cards in PTCG history that have ever self-KO’d) is that the context in which they exist usually contains cards which negate an otherwise ostensible drawback of giving your opponent a prize (let me explain):.
This card adds a unique gameplay element that makes the format more enjoyable to watch and play. (It's also one of my top five favorite Pokémon of all time.). Advocating for a ban (with the current card pool) is definitely and not ironically a skill issue

7-0-1 day 1 Worlds!!! So happy I was able to finish the day strong, as this is my first time in Masters not going 0-3 drop at worlds. Very proud of myself and my deck. Shoutout @sawyerhatemail for day 2 with same 60. I’ll see everyone in top 8 😉

1/53 Tracy League Cup.I am now undefeated in 16 straight tournament games with Kyogre, and other than a super sloppy finals set today I am pleased with my play recently. I will continue to improve.This deck is the BDIF and it isn’t close, still honing in on the optimal 60. 50

Top 16 Stockholm with Counter Catcher Scream Tail. Deck ran well all weekend, and I managed to play a lot better day 2. Cress was nuts, mad props to @0keo_is_not_fit for the idea. I think the list is optimal, I wouldn’t change a card. Jirachi is cope. Have a great day!. 2k$ +80

Top 8 at Sacramento regionals with Gardevoir. Another top cut choke but really proud of my play up until then, wasn’t nearly comfortable enough in the Lugia matchup. I’ll win one of these things eventually. S/O to @DSQuay for t128 w same 60. 100 +3k

4th/800+ masters at San Diego Regionals. Deck ran incredibly well. The Raikous were the MVPs. Getting back into the game slowly but surely. Excited to attend more events this season!

I’ve been joking about wanting dusknoir banned since stellar crown dropped, but after seeing Terapagos go from 5% Day 1 to 16% day 2 I don’t know if I’m joking anymore.

Alexander was my only loss during Swiss. He played the matchup very well and knew which plays to go for. Even if it was his first regionals, he was clearly prepared and knew how to play his deck—maybe he got lucky at times, but experience does not directly equate to skill.
The winner and finalist of Sacramento regionals were two players that attended their first regional. I see many people commenting that this is a good thing. Personally I think this says a lot about Arceus & Lugia archetypes and I can’t wait until they rotate 🤷♂️.

5-3-1 laic. Sucks after starting 5-1-1, lost r9 to fusion mew off some of the worst luck I can remember in Pokémon but I can’t complain because my play was super sloppy. Matchups are all way different now. Deck broken, play klefki, we go next

Lost win and in for 5-2-1 at Dortmund regionals. Overall pretty pleased with my play, but weird matchups and some bad beats in a close mirror set ended up costing me. I don’t regret playing Gardy at all, I think the deck is very good this format and a top contender for Louisville

Played chao gardy to 5-3 at LAIC, lost win and in. I hit exceptional matchups and had generally good rng but punted at every available opportunity. Pretty inexcusable, gotta play better.

Somehow got 2nd at a cup with this pile. Had the urge to select flowers again so I threw this together without testing and decided to run it, felt pretty smooth other than the fact that I was playing a 56 card deck. The useless ones should be pretty obvious…. 40

10-4-1 (T64 😵💫) San Antonio . Cut everything for straight consistency, list worked phenomenally especially against miraidon. Paid the price for not running control counters. Tournaments this large are very demoralizing. Will try and do better next time

It kinda sucks that the recent surge in PTCG’s popularity and interest coincides with such an abysmal online experience. Live is probably turning away a nonzero amount of people, especially those who may be coming from other games with a functional client.

Disappointing 6-3 at EUIC. Deck was insanely good the whole day, only losses were 2 Snorlax and double donk from Hands. Feels bad to win every game I got to play Pokémon and whiff day 2, but I definitely took a big risk not respecting Lax more. Onto Orlando 🫠

A bit late on this, but 2023 was an absolute blast. At the start of last year I had no intention of seriously playing Pokémon again, but then I worked hard for San Diego and managed to get Top 4. From there it was a roller coaster, I met so many amazing people (1/2)

T64/too many in Pittsburgh.Really gutted by the finish considering I was in T8 contention until R14 and then lost and had a really unfortunate tie to lose out on 32. Stings a lot more with the new $ prizing. Better next time.

I shouldn’t really need to explain why this is problematic. The deck is not without iffy matchups and won’t win every game it plays, but the potential to consistently take four prizes on multiple targets before a Pokémon can evolve (if you go first) doesn’t belong in the game.

Top 8 at the @CardShopSC cup with Reversal mewtwo. Was gonna play normal Gardy but couldn’t find my cress. Fighting gallade is supposed to be 2nd artazon, but other than that the 60 felt good. The deck is very hard but good, very few things can reliably deal with m2.

One response to this could be to say that Noctowl or Stretcher is the problem card, and that Dusknoir still has a place in a healthy format. This might be true, but I think that Dusknoir’s existence severely limits the design space of the Pokémon TCG.

The theoretical number of card designs which cause Dusknoir to “break the game” is far greater than the same number which causes Stretcher to “break the game”. Therefore, I think it’s more appropriate to place the blame on Dusknoir for the problems we are seeing right now.

49th at Portland with LZ Kyogre.This was probably the best list I’ve played this year, definitely did not give the deck the finish it deserved. Aqua storm is broken and I did 8100 damage with it this tournament.

Since we’re doing season recaps…I went 6-3 at pretty much every other event I went to. I wasn’t expecting to get my invite, let alone make top 8 at a regionals but I’m really happy with how I did for my first season back in many years. 1/2

Ordinarily, a card like Dusknoir is used as a high-risk high-reward comeback card in decks which can run a thin line of it. We can see it utilized in this way in Charizard and Dragapult; while it can enable huge swing turns, it is skill expressive and has reasonable counterplay.

In this case, you (the Pagos player) don’t care at all how many prizes the opponent draws. Dusknoir is almost always trading 1-for-1, and if you attack first on top of that you still come out ahead. Plus, you can Iono your opponent to even fewer cards to further dismantle them!.

However, cards like Night Stretcher and Noctowl enable Dusknoir to be used in a completely different, hyper-aggressive way—these tools make it possible for decks like Terapagos to consistently use multiple Dusknoir and Gust + KO on the second turn of the game going first.

That’s all I have to say for the time being, but I am certainly interested to see how this discourse evolves as the Stellar Crown format progresses. Interestingly, I think most of this will still prove to be true even if Terapagos is not the most played (or even the “best”) deck.

Lugia: Despite some consistency issues, Lug seems like 'BDIF' imo. Legacy Energy and Carmine really break the deck, with the former having so many interesting applications. Lugia has it all: single prize attackers, OHKO potential, the ability to use Hands, and answers to control.
