Friends, Today, and every day, we are so proud to be Canadians, and there's nowhere else on the entire planet we would rather be! The US tariffs that were announced on the weekend are going to affect people, communities, jobs and livelihoods for Canadians from every walk of life. We love this country. 12 years ago, we lost our home in the war in Syria in the blink of an eye. 9 years ago, Canada was the only country in the world that said to our family: "Welcome home". Over those 9 years, we visited the country’s lakes and oceans and breathed in its nature. We watched hockey and survived some harsh winters. We drove around provinces and towns with rich and varied histories. Through it all, Canadians have shared with us their warm hearts, big dreams and aspirations for what they want Canada to be. We are a nation of freedom, peace, respect, fairness, inclusion, democracy, diversity, compassion, kindness, politeness, and empathy. Because of all of you, we get to do what we love right here in Canada, and we proudly do so. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your support. Standing behind local Canadian businesses has a great impact on the future of our economy and communities that thrive when we choose to support each other. That’s the beauty of Canada. We stand together. We grow together. Support Canadian businesses. Wherever you can, choose Canadian and help businesses grow. 🇨🇦❤️

Five years ago today was one of the happiest days of my life: I became a Canadian citizen 🇨🇦. I love this country more than I can ever tell. All I wanted as a wartime refugee before then was an opportunity to belong, to be free and to stand on my own feet. Canada gave me that & more and taught me the real meaning of kindness. Forever a proud Canadian, in good times and in bad times. Thankful, peaceful and in love with this place that call home.

Happy 91st birthday to PM Jean Chrétien, one of my favourite Canadians who I learn from consistently, and whose words in the Globe and Mail define Canada and Canadians perfectly: "We love our country. We have built something here that is the envy of the world – when it comes to compassion, understanding, tolerance and finding a way for people of different backgrounds and faiths to live together in harmony."

The next steps for Canada will come, but for today, I want to thank Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau , who, above all, I have known to be a decent human being When I came to Canada in December 2015, I freshly learned that in many major democratic nations, leaders would choose hatred and fear as their fuel to govern and attract popularity, but that was not the Canada I came to in 2015 when Justin Trudeau had just started his term. Kindness matters. In September of 2016, I was introduced to him after his speech about our family at the UN, then we met for the first time the following month. In the previous years, Canada could have simply ignored the fact that millions of Syrian refugees, including our family who had lost everything, were suffering in every corner of the planet. This country could have stayed indifferent and faced our tragedies with apathy, but thankfully it chose a different direction: Compassion! During a speech at the UN, the Prime Minister spoke about my family in front of Barack Obama, Angela Merkel and many other global leaders and during my first meeting with him, he hugged my dad (whom he had never met before) as if they were best friends for 30 years - and this continued to be the case even during my last meeting with him three weeks ago. I am totally against painting anyone as perfect, and I have a belief now that change is so much needed at all levels, but my values will always teach me to give credit where it’s due - agree or disagree with the policies, it’s undeniable that Justin Trudeau gave his years to this country in service, for which I am grateful, as I am for any public servant. As he starts a new chapter, I wish him and his family all the best. In the end, I have so much faith in Canadians to choose what’s right for the most incredible country on earth, Canada. 🇨🇦❤️

What an incredible group! Joy was in the air from the start to the end. I had the incredible honour of speaking at the YMCA Peace Medal event in Hamilton, Ontario. I also had the opportunity to sign our Peace by Chocolate book for hundreds of attendees. Reflecting on the past week’s events in my homeland, sharing my story with a room full of inspiring youth and change-makers was a reminder of how powerful resilience is. To everyone who attended and took the time to connect during the book signing, thank you, thank you, thank you. Your stories truly filled me with so much hope. Can’t wait to see you all again soon and hear your stories. Congratulations to all the award winners. #onepeacewonthurt

A truly happy Friday. This week has been one of the most joyful times of my entire life. Seeing innocent people freed from the dark and cold prisons and slaughterhouses in Damascus and across Syria this past week after decades of injustice brought all of us so much hope and light. Thankful to all my Canadian friends for the very kind letters they sent to our family.
