Alanna has always defied labels. She took the best bits of being a woman and a man, and created her own unique identity. I think the term is 'gender-fluid', though there wasn't a word for this (to my knowledge) when I was writing her.
@TamoraPierce I'm rereading the Song Of the Lioness quartet (crushed 2 and 3 today)- Is Alanna bisexual? There's a line that suggests it, but I thought to ask :).

Happy Pride! Speaking as an Old, I spent little time with LGBTQA+ people (that I knew of--they were very wary in that prejudiced era) before I went to college. People in the world I lived in--school, churches, family--rarely spoke of people who weren't cisgender & heterosexual;.
